Fallout: New Vegas Official Thread #12

Obsidian did... Mask of the Betrayer

That's what gives me hope :) Great game (or expansion, rather )

I really hope there's more C&C in this one, though. FO3's didn't really amount to anything.

I think Fallout: New Vegas could definately be an improvement over Fallout 3 by taking some focus off the action and turning that attention to meaningful choices like in the first two Fallouts, of which I've recently become a huge fan.

i want to see area 51 in new vegas. maybe controlled by the enclave.

I'd rather have area 51, minus the enclave. In fact, I wouldn't complain if future Fallout games didn't feature the enclave at all.

I was actually referring to the fact that they have been the main antagonist for the past two Fallout games.

A few hundred hours into FO3 i came to the realisation that i wasn't playing a fallout game, i was svckered into playing a shooter masquerading as a sequel to a classic RPG series.

What confuses me is how long it took me to realise how little this reminded me of the original fallouts.

I'm not looking forward to another fallout 3 type game, i want them to try to do some justice to the originals.

You played it for a couple hundred hours? You liked it enough to play it that much...

I've played FO3 longer than FO1 and 2 combined.

Lol, I hadn't noticed that the first time...

Yeah, I'd say any game you can play for a few hundred hours, no matter what sort of name you might call it, is considered a resounding success. :)

+1

Fo1 and 2 may have been better to alot of people, but Fo3 is still a success anyway you slice it.

The fact that Obsidian was willing to use the same engine and resources for NewVegas speaks to that.

I think using the engine/resources was part of the deal in the first place.

Assuming you know the terms of said agreement, which no one does, with the exception of JE maybe.

I'm quite certain that Obsidian would not have used the engine if Fo3 turned out only to be a mediocre game, or if the engine lacked the capabilities that Obsidian required.

since they own the engine(the refined oblivion engine) does that mean they can use the engine and make another game from it? and does this mean bethesda has to work on making another engine? enlighten me?

Kind of depends on what is meant by "engine," I think. I mean, technically, Fallout 3 uses the Gamebryo engine, the license of which Bethesda has purchased from that company to use in designing Fallout 3 (and, off-hand, I believe Oblivion as well, though I could be wrong.) Then there's the largely proprietary (I'm assuming) design tools, which we know of as the GECK, that the designers themselves used to make the game.

I don't, myself, know (well, anything) about the business side of the deal with Obsidian has going with Bethesda, here. But it seems that they're going to be using what is essentially the GECK to make New Vegas. At a guess, I'd imagine this is so they can reuse alot of assets from Fallout 3, without having to go back to the drawing board and making a whole new game from the ground up.

Well, Obsidian isn't one entity, it's made up of lots of little individuals. Maybe some think the engine is good and some not. However, it stands to reason that a developer like Obsidian which isn't owned by another company and has to pitch their ideas to publishers would latch on to the idea of New Vegas. Fallout 3 was a big financial success and it makes all the sense in the world to accept an offer to attach your name to it.

That and many people at Obsidian have been involved with Fallout before, and some of them worked on the Fallout 3 that was cancelled (including Josh Sawyer who is leading New Vegas as I understand it). I'm sure they love to get the opportunity to get another crack at it.

Not if they really wanted to develop a Fallout game. It's very much a possibility that Bethesda said "if you want to develop a Fallout game it has to use our engine, and it has to be like Fallout 3". If you really want to work on something you'll probably jump at the opportunity whether you like the attached strings or not.

Especially when you're an independent studio where your company literally survives project-to-project. A chance to have your company's logo associated with a highly profitable IP is too good to pass up.

True, I think. Obsidian obviously agreed to the constraints Beth put on them. The real question revolves around what those constraints might be. I'll continue my original argument that, by using Obsidian, Beth can present a Fallout that DOES NOT look and feel like a Beth game. That is, it is entirely possible that the Obsidian game is much more story driven, more quest-hub, less exploration sort of game.

Anyway, i'd fiond that more interesting, even though I prefer Beth style games.
