Fast travel detracts 50% from the game but who can be bother

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 6:03 pm

This talk of `I don`t have time so I Fast travel` actually makes no sense (now ya`ll must really concentrate here)...

People say `I don`t have time`, but then they spend time in the game anyway. Or they speed through the game F\Ting to finish it and jump right on the next game to finish it in the `time they don`t have`.

And people who work, hey, I work, but guess what I do? I SAVE my game after getting somewhere and continue later. I MAKE time later.

F\T doesn`t save me time; it don`t save you time. You just spend that same time wasting the same time playing the game. You might as well take your time and see the sights and get immersed while doing it, rather than teleporting everywhere like a rabbit on speed.

It`s a false logic to say `I don`t have time`.

Because I don`t like false logic.

"I don't have time" should be translated to "I don't have fun spending my time with that". So the two different opinions are really whether it is fun to hike or not, and most people end up somewhere along a scale from feeling that it is ALWAYS fun to feeling that it is NEVER fun. Depending on where you are on the scale you will use fast travel more or less frequently, and the way it is designed helps people find that balance, which is why it is a quite clever and well designed feature.

Fast Travel existed in Daggerfall without a compass, but in that it was a necessity due to the huge, boring wilderness.

Personally I don't use Fast Travel much, occasionally I'll use it if I've been set back quite a bit by a bug or crash but generally no. Nice to have the option though. Maybe it should have more penalties and yes the quests need to be better designed with better directions etc. Although for me I find it helps to let a bank of quests in one place build up before hiking over there, makes more sense to me. And in cases like the Thieves' Guild I usually take a carriage anyway if I have no other quests to do in the area.

Im glad they have fast travel.

On my very first character I played Skyrim,I took my time to enjoy most of the game and loved walking and exploring everywhere so I wouldn't miss anything.

Im now on my 7th Character,I have beaten every guild, done alot of quests, beaten the main quest atleast 4 times now on 4 separate characters, and spent atleast 500 Hours of gameplay so far.

Now that I have gotten through that initial "wow" factor of exploring, fast travel helps me get from place to place quick. And I am glad, because no way in hell do I want to walk all over again on my 8th character after my 5th time beating the main quest and redo-ing the companions guild questline for the 4th time.

The only way no fast travel would be acceptable is if there was a faster method of transportation. Faster horses? Riding a dragon would sure make it fun traveling across the map. etc.

If quests were more local instead of the other side of the map, then I'd never use fast travel. However that is not the case and I can't really be bothered spending time running around when doing fetch quests, and let's face it, there's a lot of fetch quests to be had.

except that they are 100% connected. you don't understand game development if you can't see how they are connected.
Pray, expound, and preferably not with a one-liner about 'it's all dumbing down for casuals'.

Assuming someone who explores, but has a home in Markarth, and is a member of the College, but who doesn't want to walk from Winterhold to Whiterun or Windhelm for the five hundredth time just to get a carriage home is 'teleporting everywhere like a rabbit on speed' would, imo, also be false logic, to use your own term.

Exactly this
I enjoy meandering around the game worlds Bethesda creates catching butterflies and getting diverted by seeing an old ruin that wasn't where I was planning to go to. Consequently I rarely use fast travel.
Just because I enjoy doing things that may seem pointless to some doesn't mean I want to force others to play the same way.

You might as well take your time and see the sights and get immersed while doing it, rather than teleporting everywhere like a rabbit on speed.
There is plenty to see at your destination too, and no less immersion to be had while there. The path to your destination isn't going anywhere; you can wander it any time you like. Choosing not to use fast travel achieves the same end as removing fast travel, but removing fast travel gives us nothing while keeping fast travel does. Hence, if you don't like fast travel, then don't use it.
