Fast travel detracts 50% from the game but who can be bother

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 10:20 pm

You don't ever have to walk from city to city first as there are carraiges.

I downloaded the more carraiges mod, so it also goes to and from small towns, I don't use fast travel because I have that.

Travel system with consequences and fees, with map travel if you want it, is dumbed down from travel system with consequences and fees? If you use the thought out travel system, how does the first option affect you?

I'd suggest that "detracts" is in the eye of the beholder.

If maximizing fast travel lets you enjoy the game, nothing wrong with that.

Nothing wrong with minimizing your fast travel, or not using it at all, if this is what you want to do.

I like Gothic 3's travel system better, where you have to find a teleport stone from each place to fast travel between places.

to play it properly

I'm sorry. I don't understand that part. What do you mean "to play it properly?"

I can sit down and play this game for five minutes or five hours and I always manage to do something entertaining. Sounds proper to me.

Fast travel... just another `feature` no one asked for and no one would`ve missed if it had never been invented.

Wrong. I wanted it. I would have missed it if it had never been invented. So your sweeping, blanket statement is now false.

If you fast travel everywhere you are missing out on soooo much, probably 50% of what the game has to offer.
I think you should ask yourself exactly what it is that you are doing that fast travel helps you to do. When you have the answer, you will see that your approach to the game, and not fast travel, is what detracts 50% from your game.

as it stands now i feel it detracts from the "metagame" of managing your supplies & planning journeys. part of the whole point of an open world game like this is that the world itself is somewhat of an obstacle to overcome. it really diminishes a lot of the sense of accomplishment from exploration and travel imo.

I think that pretty much sums up my experience and enjoyment of the game(s). For those of us who enjoy the "metagame" aspects, I wish they provided a bit more enrichment for our immersion and imaginations -- e.g., brief animantions for eating, sleeping, etc. I in no way wish to restrict others who use FT to pinball back and forth across the map, nor force them to eat and sleep for that matter. Again, I just wish they'd throw some of metagamers a bone, even if it was just an optional trigger in the settings for some of these things. (Don't like the sleep animations? Disable them. Don't like the stamina reduction for not eating? Turn them off.)

In Daggerfall it made sense as the journey could be a long one.In Skyrim making sure I have a ham sandwich for my trip to Riften doesn't add much to me.

I HATE fast travel!!!! But I do run every where and it's been worken out for me so far. But I have noticed some talking bout walking instead of runnen so I tried it out last night and it was pretty nice!!! Yes it took me 3(in-game) days to go from Whitrun-Riftin which normally takes like 8is hours(in-game time) to do but the view and the sounds etc... made the extra travel time worth it.I'm not sayen everyone should strictly walk every where, but it is nice to slow down and enjoy the simple things in the game.Hell I even stop to listen to the birds from time to time and I'm always stoppen to take a look at the view or to stargaze but I'm a big TES nerd.

Nothing nerdy about that, it's just enjoying the game and people should do it more because that's what developers do it for. :)

And if they must have Fast travel, have wandering monsters interceptions, the further you FT the more interceptions with bandits, monsters, etc.

No, I don't have the time to walk everywhere and this isn't Final Fantasy.

Just get the faster horses mod. Then you can see the world AND get places fast.

I don't have hours and hours to play either, but I don't treat the game like: "Ok, I'm gonna go play Syrim for an hour, and I need to complete this quest." I hardly ever fast travel, and if I spend the whole time just wandering along the road or through the wilderness, great! That's what this game is all about, the exploration is what makes it fun in my opinion, not the objectives.

Basically what I'm saying is, I don't care if walking somewhere takes forever, because the journey to a quest objective is just as fun for me as actually getting there and doing the quest.

I would be willing to give up fast travelling, if I get a couch drawn by 12 mammoths instead.

Are you not understanding that it has nothing to do with letting others play how they want? Stop saying that. Fast travel hinders game design. Hinders quests and quest direction. Stop being selfish.

Fast travel being in the game may encourage the designers to make quests that require large amounts of long-distance travel.

But I don't see how it has anything to do with quest directions. That (bad journal, etc) is all on quest markers. Has nothing to do with FT.

I only see one logical reason for FT, getting stuck inbetween rocks occasionally, or respawning your follower, otherwise, i find it simply dumb. carriages make more sense, but they should cost more....

If I take two Dwemer Centurion Spheres and two large dwemer structs to connect them then I should be able to build a Dwemer Steam Bike. :lightbulb:

i don't mind the way it is now, you want to FT do it, you want to walk then dont. I do admit most radiant tasks are getting people some random garbage and then going back. never forget I had a line of quests to do from riften all the way to solitude, the adventure took 13 in game days (on master) I complete 3 main quests and at least 8 radiant ones. I discoverd many epic things along the way, when I finaly reached the end I was a little sad that it ended.

i usually group up all my garbage to do in one hold take a carrige there and do them

I don't like to fast travel and I always avoid it, although lately in the game this has become a little more disappointing for two basic reasons:

- As game performance becomes crappier with time, random freezes and crashes completely ruin the world exploring experience. Sometimes I find myself following 'tested safe routes' where I haven't experienced a crash to go from one place to another, instead of letting myself go free and jump off path like I used to do before.

- By following similar routes more frequently, I started to notice world events repeating themselves far too often. Things like, 'oh, there's that fox, here comes the deer, followed by the Imperial troops, that lonely farmer and the khajiit. It's kind of like Groundhog Day at times, really.

people complained and complained that they wanted an alternative to fast travel in TES, and now that they've got it, it's still not good enough. Many, many people still use fast travel, some more than others... and yet there are others like me who hardly use it at all...if ever. I don't see the issue with it, and certainly see no reason to remove it from the game.

The answer is very simple, learn to use a little self control. You don't like fast travel? don't use it then, nobody is forcing to you use it, and it does no harm to you or your game...whether you use it or not.
