I think I remember reading one time the reason you never saw female character models is because of hardware limitations. I think it was something about needing to have more memory to be able to cache both male and female models/sounds/etc for instant access in multiplayer and because of that, it's just easier to use a single gender model. That was years ago though and considering how much hardware has advanced over these years, it's sad how we're still seeing gender inequality in video games such as this and it's getting old.

I'm extremely disappointed there'll be no female models, especially considering how much they go on about character customization. I haven't seen one in a all the videos I've watched or featured anywhere on the website, so it's safe to assume they won't be included.

Aubrey “Bezzy” Hesselgren – Technical Game Designer:
"Also, you’d practically double up on animation (women move noticeably differently to men) doubling up on the production of animations, and the memory footprint for that."

Yep, you're right. It's all in the link I posted earlier. Even thought it has been four months since they answered those questions I'm sure they're still going along with that plan. Here's a repost of the link: http://brink.chefenco.com/splash-damage-explains-the-lack-of-female-characters/

Wait, I thought this place where Brink takes place started out small and now has so many people it is on the "brink" of "all out civil war" because there is too many people and not enough resources. How would they grow to such an immense size without females? For that reason alone, I do hope there are female NPCs at least and I always hope for being able to play as a female.

Right now, there's no current plans for female characters in Brink. If that ever changes, we'll let you know.

I don't see why BRINK get singled out. Its almost a givin that your going to be a guy. some examples of games without girls. Battlefield Bad company 2, Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor. It shouldn't be a problem.

Please quit asking for females. It's not going to happen for obvious reasons. For the 99th time, this game is not developed by Bethesda. It's not an RPG or a shooter that is trying to be Elder scrolls or something. I cannot understand why Bethesda forums are full of people asking for female models when Splash Damage's forum members are against female models. I'll go with the last ones on this one. Female models would need much modification, new animations, new clothes and such. This is not a roleplaying game, deal with it. Also, it has customization, yes. But it's not it's main point.

Regardless of who makes any game, as a female gamer I enjoy games that do have female characters and thus feel obligated to ask for them. Being on Bethesda's forums has nothing to do with it but rather being a female does. That said, I have played many games which do not have female characters through the years and enjoyed a number of them and am sure I will enjoy this one too. But I will continue my quest to include female characters in any games I play, Bethesda made or not.

It's like you are asking for folks not to ask for anything they want on the forum like "weapons you would like to see" or "clans you would like to see", we can ask for what we want, but must accept what they give us. Like any other games forum, folks ask for what they want, and I wanted female characters as I do in any game. So please don't ask folks to "quit asking" for what they want.

What most people need to realise is that asking for any big feature is pointless by now as we're too close to release. Not that that will stop them.

It is indeed as it is already decided but I shall let them know my dissatisfaction with it in hopes they decide to make their next game and might include females. And it's no more pointless than complaining about aspects of a game after it's release. Folks do so in hopes the next time around, things will change. ;)

This is a forum - we discuss stuff. The OP started out wondering if there were going to be female player characters. And several of us - both male and female - have stated why we like having the option. Not every shooter is limited to male characters, nor does every RPG give you full blown gender choice an characterization.

We "deal with it" just fine - but we are allowed our opinions.

Yep, but there are a fair number that do have female characters and the number has grown a bit in the past several years. With so many ladies now playing FPS games, I imagine the demand will increase merely by demanding women. (ever known a demanding woman?)

That said, it is much too late for this game to include them as I would want time to go into other more important things to make this as good as it gets. However I do hope not only Splash Damage but all other FPS developers to take note of how many ladies are now playing video games including shooters. The number is increasing at alarming rates and thus it's a lot of sells to think about. I tend to ask and encourage this in any game. And I'm not fond of the female NPCs being all busty females in sparse armor.

I mean who wouldn't want more women like The Frag Dolls to play with? LOL

BTW, at this point this is a non-issue for this game.

I'm hoping this is something they can add later on if they feel there's sufficient interest. I realize that would require a lot of new art and animations so there would have to be a lot of interest, but at least it seems possible.

It is too bad they decided to leave out the option for a female character because it does do a disservice to the girls that do enjoy FPS games. Market anolysis says that 41% of gamers are female. I am also a female gamer and it is nice to have the choice. BTW, I DO play mostly FPS or FPSRPG games. I play the multiplayers BFBC2, COD4, COD5, Crysiswars, HL2DM, UT3 and all of the associated single player games. Will the lack of a female character prevent me from playing this game? No it wont.

That said, I have to wonder what the "slim" male model looks like, We saw a "medium" build on in the character optimization video which wasnt all that big IMO, so the slim one must look like a pre-puberty teen...

Comedy gold thread. What people do not understand is that this is an FPS based on gameplay and combat mechanics. You lot seem to wish for more customization so you can make this special 'character' you have in your mind and treating the game like Elder Scrolls shooter edition. No females in a first person shooter is nothing new, move on.

Nope, no special character needed. But the exclusion of women from FPS games is an insult to us in a way. There are plenty of women in combat in this world doing real world combat in real world wars. We just want to see women in all games as a matter of being realistic. For instance, I could not play a woman in HL2 but the inclusion of women was nice. There is no reason for females who play and enjoy shooters not to notice the inequality. And while it seems fine to most guys playing shooters, to us women it seems quite desirable.

And please don't tell folks to "move on" here. It's rude. It's a forum where we enjoy opinions and allow them despite your not wanting to hear it. If you don't have any desire for them, this thread is not for you. :) And try to remember, the more folks that buy and play and enjoy this game, the more money Splash Damage makes and the more money they have to make bigger and better games. Don't run off potential customers by telling them to "move on?.

Realism has nothing to do with it. The game itself is not realistic or a simulator or anything. It's quite obvious that shooting games do tend to have male characters as protagonists most of the time, or have male models in multiplayer. I believe this is due to the fact that most gamers who enjoy shooters are men. Also, having females in the game would require more production, Splash damage is not a huge company. As I have said already, I believe having one gender in the game is better because they can aim at making the accessories/animations/textures much better. Having a second gender would make things require more effort and we'd have less quality. But this is my opinion. Also, my apologies for being rude before, Bethesda forums are different. I did not mean to be.

I don't run potential customers off, I just save them time and money. The game is about combat, they will be dissapointed when they will realise it's not a barbie dress-up game.

I understand all the reasons. And I've played many shooters without female characters. The problem is, more and more girls are playing shooters everyday and are a huge potential market and most of us wish for female characters or at least female NPCs. While it might take more time to develop I believe the trade off of more customers would be time well spent. While there was a time most girls did not play shooters, that time is drawing toward having equal numbers playing them. And of course, no game is really realistic, but the total absence of half the human race is quite noticed and for us females at least, feels just wrong. That said, I look forward to playing this game despite there being no females in it, but I want Splash Damage and any other company developing FPS games to at least be aware of what girl gamers want in a game and why. So...I express it any chance I get.

I think most long time members on this forum know that Brink is a shooter. Many, many members here play shooters and love them. Others have a preference of RPGs (like me) but do know the difference and do play a fair share of shooters. The members are used to us having games that are not RPGs on the boards like WET, Rogue Warrior and now Brink and Rage. Most you see come in that don't seem to know about this game are new folks signing up to check out the game as happens any time a new game is announced and then promoted. We want them to feel free to ask any question they like and not be treated as inferior for not knowing or told to "go away" or such. Each new member that comes to ask about this game has the potential of being the next raging fan of Brink and spreading the word about the game. If we treat them with respect, they are more likely to stick around and try it out.
So here on this forum we have rules that say we can't flame them and we can't tell them to "move on" or treat them with disrespect. We welcome new members and we like to take the time to educate them instead of flame them.

So, nothing wrong with telling them "this shooter does not have female characters for __________reason" and leave it at that. Then they know. BTW, I hardly would call FO3 a dress up barbie doll game.

I would easily call it a terrible shooter, personally. But then again it's an RPG, it's main goal is not the combat. Although if it was, something went terribly wrong.

well I think many people know the reasons why Femals were scratched off the table ( many interviews and yes they did try to get the gals and ladies in, unfortunatly while doing this they kinda off-set the Scale of the game) SO.

I heard about the Medic having side " Protect the people, get them to saftey" kind of thing so I would like to see Ladies in the civilian side.
And I'd like to have a few refrences about ladies working in the background, Maybe you could have a lady on the "Radio pvssyr", at some point or another which would be nice.

and the second point I would like to bring up is that I dont think the ladies will be to dissapionted should they not have a chance to play as a female, yet thier gender is very much included within the game. Which also includes them with clothing, personally I As a male ( I cant beleive Im saying this) Am completely tired and sick of the entire Female Gender being comprised of scantily clad women with thier vital baby nurishment organs popping out like ballons.
