Realism has nothing to do with it. The game itself is not realistic or a simulator or anything. It's quite obvious that shooting games do tend to have male characters as protagonists most of the time, or have male models in multiplayer. I believe this is due to the fact that most gamers who enjoy shooters are men. Also, having females in the game would require more production, Splash damage is not a huge company. As I have said already, I believe having one gender in the game is better because they can aim at making the accessories/animations/textures much better. Having a second gender would make things require more effort and we'd have less quality. But this is my opinion. Also, my apologies for being rude before, Bethesda forums are different. I did not mean to be.
I understand all the reasons. And I've played many shooters without female characters. The problem is, more and more girls are playing shooters everyday and are a huge potential market and most of us wish for female characters or at least female NPCs. While it might take more time to develop I believe the trade off of more customers would be time well spent. While there was a time most girls did not play shooters, that time is drawing toward having equal numbers playing them. And of course, no game is really realistic, but the total absence of half the human race is quite noticed and for us females at least, feels just wrong. That said, I look forward to playing this game despite there being no females in it, but I want Splash Damage and any other company developing FPS games to at least be aware of what girl gamers want in a game and why. So...I express it any chance I get.
I don't run potential customers off, I just save them time and money. The game is about combat, they will be dissapointed when they will realise it's not a barbie dress-up game.
I think most long time members on this forum know that Brink is a shooter. Many, many members here play shooters and love them. Others have a preference of RPGs (like me) but do know the difference and do play a fair share of shooters. The members are used to us having games that are not RPGs on the boards like WET, Rogue Warrior and now Brink and Rage. Most you see come in that don't seem to know about this game are new folks signing up to check out the game as happens any time a new game is announced and then promoted. We want them to feel free to ask any question they like and not be treated as inferior for not knowing or told to "go away" or such. Each new member that comes to ask about this game has the potential of being the next raging fan of Brink and spreading the word about the game. If we treat them with respect, they are more likely to stick around and try it out.
So here on this forum we have rules that say we can't flame them and we can't tell them to "move on" or treat them with disrespect. We welcome new members and we like to take the time to educate them instead of flame them.
So, nothing wrong with telling them "this shooter does not have female characters for __________reason" and leave it at that. Then they know. BTW, I hardly would call FO3 a dress up barbie doll game.
