Female Characters?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:11 am

I'd just like to ask if there will be any female characters in Brink.

Myself being a dude and not having problems with whatever gender my toon is I know of a few gamer girls that are way more picky about thier in-game appearance. Even thought this looks to be a brutal, testosterone-filled game where it is more likely to rain blood than water I think it would attract a bigger crowd, not girls exclusively, with some curves on the toons.

Either way I'm happy cause my aim is to be the scariest hulk you ever tried to outrun.

I was wondering that myself - I was looking closely at the recently released video but all of the figures seemed to be men. I am female and usually, if given a choice in the matter, I will choose to run through the game with a female character. It's not because I want to create a pretty pretty princess toon with ridiculous looking Hooters-esque "protective" gear, but more because if I am trying to get into the character and the game, I can relate better to a female.

But not every game gives you gender options, which I can deal with. This game looks pretty cool, so I will play it regardless, but it is nice to have the choice of gender when starting the game.

I'm a male, but in every game that has the option for you to choose which gender will you be, I take a girl one first. It's more exciting for me to try the game with a female character and eventually switch to a male character and continue the game without changing. It would be nice if there were female characters, but I personally think they aren't really necessary. There are few female gamers that mind male characters from what I recall, but I guess it's nice for a girl to play with a female character.

Yeh I remember Paul saying that they decided to not have females pretty early in the design of the game. I don't have a problem with it personally, if there were female models then there would essentially be HALF the outfits available than if there weren't female models.

Not to mention that no one would use the 'heavy' female body type =p

I definitely see potential for female characters in the game. Maybe not heavy female characters but free-running type models. Surely that couldn't be too hard to implement.

Wait, I thought this place where Brink takes place started out small and now has so many people it is on the "brink" of "all out civil war" because there is too many people and not enough resources. How would they grow to such an immense size without females? For that reason alone, I do hope there are female NPCs at least and I always hope for being able to play as a female.

I hate it when im "forced" to play as a girl. So I can only imagine it must be the same sort of frustrtion for female gamers being forced to play as males. Their should always be the choice i believe.

Personally, I prefer to play a game where I can somehow customize the character so it looks like I play as myself ... if I play a game where I play as another character, then it's usually hit-or-miss for me when it boils down to me liking the game, regardless of gameplay or graphic appeal. After looking at the character customization trailer, I'm like ... "Okay? Where's the part where I can give my character a name and gender? I have to be somewhat identifiable when I go online." I saw stuff like Archtypes and personalities, which I like to play as someone that carries a big gun. Granted, I'm not that buff (more like lean) but at least I have abs. In games, I tend to build myself (as a game character) like I work out using a Bowflex, or in Gold's Gym because I well ... I work out. :)

In this day of age, if a character customization is to include both male and female options, then both genders should have equal options as far as character performance goes. Non-statistical clothes would obviously be a totally different matter, but as far as statistics and character performance goes (including clothes and armor that would modify character stats), those should match for both genders and it'll all be good. That would mean all the body sizes from slim to buff for females as well ... last thing I need to read on game forums is something that resembles Women's Suffrage-- that is so 2000's ... we're in the 2010's now.

That's just my opinion though... take it as you will.

This seems to be the only reply answering the question so I'll have to stick to your knowledge. If this is what they have decided I really hope they would add them to the game after the official release. Players should have the option to choose gender in every new game by now.

And to be honest not every player that would pick a female character would do it for the looks and I'm sure we'd see a lot of heavy bodied female characters in-game. It won't necessarily mean they are fat, just a bit more buffed than the slim and agile ones. Just like the light-weight male characters would be larger than the light-weight female characters the heavy ones would have the same difference if not increased.

To all the other posters I must say I like most of your comments and inputs. Let's hope the development team has thought of all this or stumble upon this thread to read our ideas.

I rarely play as a female in games where I get the choice, I do agree though that we should at least have the choice.

One of the things that I've always liked about Bethesda games like Oblivion and Fallout 3 is the opportunity to customize your point of view character, and this absolutely extends to gender. Lots of gamers, both men and women, prefer to play female characters. And for a game that spends so much time talking about the depth of their customization, I find it bizarre that they'd overlook the ability to play a female character.

If I'm getting picky, I'd ask why no game I've ever played lets you have chest hair. That sort of baffles me too. But not being able to play a female character just seems ridiculous to me.

Dude, here - but I also like to try using different game persona's on occasion to see if there's any or what difference in the gaming experience, and sometimes there is.

Surely Beth' will include some female characters somewhere? Even big knob-directed titles like Gears and Halo have female NPC's - not to mention the tons of character traits available to PC users in all those MMORPGs - there are also examples of chick-driven titles like the original 'Tomb Raider' and more recent 'Bayonetta' and co-ops like the 'Resident Evil' series that have been very commercially successful.

So yeah - I'd like to see some ladies in the game, player or NPC, the softer voice also just tends to calm things down a bit after those wild large scale sausage-filled melee and beat-down'fests.

Oh yeah - I also wouldn't mind seeing a "heavy" female character - I think it'd rock seeing a big bad Mama Hoss character put the smack-down on some whiny mouthy little kid who shouldn't even be playing this title to begin with. Just sayin'

There's absolutely no way to add female characters and gear by launch. I even have trouble imagining it in DLC. My money would be you'll see it in a sequel. I personally don't find the game incomplete without the ability to choose a gender just for aesthetics, but can see its use for stats (speed, health) like in Oblivion. But, that's a huge topic to tackle in terms of balance and general gameplay. Stuff like that just doesn't get thrown in the last few months. I'm sure the devs love the passion you guys are showing about the game, so keep it up and you'll eventually see it implemented.

Meh, I really could care less, If you add girls cool, if not fine. Anyway the muscular Mama Hoss idea would make me ROFL. Especially when a 9 year old kid gets steam-rolled by a girl.

[Besides girls should be in the kitchen makin' samiches (nah I'm jk)]

Bethesda games have always had an absurd amount of diversity, I can't fathom why this one would be any different. Hell, even Oblivion had straight up topless girls on the PC. Every bit of armor, every weapon made the character distinct, and every choice made altered the way your character was perceived. Why in the world would they leave out the option to be female? My character can wear 3 more vests and 4 more types of boots? Who cares? Leaving such a glaring omission in what is obviously an otherwise comprehensive Bethesda title makes not one bit of logical sense, and to me is inexcusable.

Brink is not developed by Bethesda.

On the topic : I'm sorry, no. Since there are 3 bodytypes i'd rather keep it on males only. It takes enough time to edit and make the clothes/appearance/armor look right. Adding females would only make both male and female look mediocre. I'd rather have one of them with super detailed meshes/textures than having 2 mediocre.

But Bethesda is known for RPG's, not shooters, where the majority of the fanbase are men. Removing a female option from an RPG is a lot more crippling than removing the option form an FPS...at least IMO.

Hrmm...anyone know if there are going to be noncombatants in Brink? Scared civilians hiding in their homes as the Resistance blows them up or Security raids them looking for terrorists?

If there are, we could expect to see female avatars, just as detailed, but not playable and without the customizability of oh so many clothing and body type options.

There will be civilians. In fact, Medics will have side missions where they can escort civilians to safety.

Then I would say its a good bet there will be females in game, even if you can't play them. Take from that what you will. I would bet having a base model would make it easier to implement them as playable later on.

There you have it from the devs themselves.

Last line:
"And, whether there will be female characters in a DLC, patch or such in the future would be more up to Bethesda Softworks. Only time will tell if we’re ever to see playable females characters in Brink."
