Football Thread - World Cup Special

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:55 pm

In a little over 24 hours the FIFA World Cup 2010 - the biggest and best sporting event in the calender - will kick off with South Africa vs Mexico. Is your country represented at this competition? Who are you going to support? Intend on watching as many matches as possible, or just the big ones or your country? Are you taking the ultimate challenge and finding an alcoholic drink from a country in each game you're going to watch?

There's a predictions competition going on over in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1091230-world-cup-fantasy-sportsgenius, and a fantasy football competition through the Metro newspaper (website is being a bit dodgy for me just now though), where I have a http://fantasyfootball.metro.co.uk/worldcup/leagues/view/8022518.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1085739-football-thread/

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH AMERICAN-STYLED FOOTBALL

Just a friendly reminder - we're not interested in having discussions about what the game "should" be called, be it "soccer" or "football" or whatever, so please don't bring that kind of nonsensical arguments into here. We've gone though 14 threads of having at least one argument-per-thread, and frankly the mods are sick of having to moderate and clean up the place for flaming/trolling. So please, just leave those discussions to PMs if you really feel the need to express your opinion on it.
Anyone who ignores this warning will be reported and subsequently dealt with by the mods.

Well as I have to go to work about an hour after most games end due to the time difference, probably not. Besides Cable TV has all the rights and have banned all other channels from even showing highlights. I have the rival service, so I'm out of luck. Guess if England or Greece start doing well I'll watch live, otherwise it'll be internet re-runs for me. So much for them making it available to all the people. Meh. :meh:

Same. Well apart from the Greece bit.

I can't be bothered watching us lose all the time.

Go USA!

Really though, I don't see us advancing that far this year. I'm excited for the World Cup as always though, although I wish Ronaldinho was playing for Brazil.

USA USA USA... I have us moving out of the first round, but it would take a miracle after that I'm afraid.

I think the groups are set up fairly well this year.

I think America is in it. But, to be honest, I could really care less. I have tried to watch soccer a couple of times, but its just so boring to me. I think I would rather have a vasectomy via wood chipper than have to suffer through watching the World Cup. But, I'm sure the rest of the world probably thinks something similar about the Super Bowl.

I hope not. Aren't we against you? That would be a new low for us, like that time the Japanese beat us...

I think the USA did beat England back in like 1950 or something? 1-0 and then the dude that scored the goal got killed by a Haitian dictator. I remember hearing about it on ESPN. Probably the only bit of World Cup history I know.

Much later than that moment of history, you beat us in a friendly in 1993 which the English rag The Sun referred to as

YANKS 2 PLANKS 0!

Much as I love The Sun http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football-englands-new-low-as-us-pile-on-the-misery-dooley-and-lalas-add-a-further-chapter-to-taylors-tale-of-woe-as-the-americans-go-one-better-than-their-forebears-in-belo-horizonte-1490806.html is the Independent's report on the match

If this happens we'll have to build an even bigger extension on the treatment room.

World Cup today, I'll probably watch both live games on ITV since I have little else to do. Come on Uruguay and South Africa!!!!!

...and Rafa had to save face somehow, after bombing the club out of Europe and all...

I'll be getting the San Miguel out for the SA vs Mexico game, but I'm not sure about France vs Uruguay? I'm not really one to drink wine without a meal

EDIT: Kronenbourg, duh

It's awful indeed, on a day when they could have celebrated the nation grandpa helped build.

Watching the opening ceremony now, half wishing they'd just get on with the damned football.

Terrible shame about Nelson Mandela though, what a [censored] thing to happen. :sadvaultboy:

You do a little more than save face by donating £96,000!

I never watch opening ceremonies. I'll turn my TV on at 2:30 and watch the build up from there. I'm with Crypto here. South Africa and Uruguay to win although this is classic British underdog syndrome :P

I'm not generally one for opening ceremonies, but that was actually pretty damn good!

Just picked up some Budweiser (ew, but I needed something American) and San Miguel (plus backup for countries that have me stumped!), but I didn't see any decent offers on Kronenbourg. I'll need to have another look after the first game.

Was that a gigantic dung beetle chasing the football, I had Dutch commentary at the time?

50 minutes until the first match of the World Cup 2010! :celebration:

EDIT: Also, SuperMage, England is going to be destroyed by America so you might just as well start rooting for New Zealand

Oooh is it?

And yes, im expecting England to fail, somehow we will lose to the USA. England, successful and footie can only ever used in one sentence (or similar ones)

England will be obliterated by the mighty Americans. Landon Donovon versus Wayne Rooney, Clint Dempsey v Steven Gerrard, Tim Howard v David James ... or Rob Green ... or Joe Hart.

But actually a really guilty part of me won't mind if England come second in our group. My leavers ball from school is on the same night as Englands 1/4 final if they win the group. If we come second then it's a different night, so although I do want England to go top I'm not complaining if they don't!

I think it was rolling a giant metal ball of dung, not too sure though. It was about as ambiguous as a huge Dung Beetle sculpture can possibly be....

...and if we lose to the Americans, I'll... I'll.... I don't know what I'll do but it won't be holy.
