For people with freezing issues...

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:38 pm

The restore file system seems to have worked for me. I guess some files must corrupt over time because I had a good 25-30 hours in the game when it first came out without any crashes or bugs at all. Then all of a sudden my game froze a few times and then my save file wouldn't load. It couldn't have been a corrupt save file because auto-save was off and the game never froze while saving manually. After the patch I decided to start a new game.. I had even more bugs than before plus it was still freezing.. After restoring the file system everything is running smoothly. I highly recommend anyone with problems to do this.

Yes, restoring the file system seems to be a temporary fix to the game. I had my first freeze last night, and after trying to reboot it kept saying my disc was corrupted, so I transferred all my saves and deleted everything and re-installed it. It's VITAL for people doing the same that you restore your file system after doing a lot of deleting and installing of files.I think there's something in the game files that gets installed that I believe is corrupt, and must be removed through safe mode.

also, your save can go corrupt even if autosave is off and it doesn't freeze while saving. I had a file go corrupt after doing a few side quests, so I think it has to do with how much stuff you do in the game.

agreed. but at this point I'd rather be able to somewhat play the game I've already put a 140 canadian into for the collector's edition game & guide. that's more than twice what most people paid, and here I am still trying to defend it.

I'm not happy either, and it's been up on the classifieds for over a month, with little replies, so word about it's problems have spread. I'm just trying to help the people who want to be able to play it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have tried to implement all of them. I played for 15 minutes, went to save my game, and it froze on the menu screen. I am done with this game. I have played for 60 hours, my save file is somewhere around, 7.5 MB, and I can no longer play this game without it freezing. I hardly had any freezes for the first 50 hours, but now it is useless to even try. It really annoys me because this game is fantastic. It's a shame it was released in such a disgraceful state. I've never seen such an unstable game in my lifetime, and that even includes an old PC game I owned which was actually recalled. Everyone associated with the development of this game should be ashamed of themselves, especially the testers.

If there happens to be another patch, I will give this thing another try. For now, I'm not wasting any more of my time on it.

Man looks like you had a way harder time than I. I managed to barely limp through, my game froze 10 times during the last mission but I made it. Normally, I would have continued to play and explore, but this one's getting traded in tomorrow. The only thing I'd take issue with is that I bet you that the testers realized that this game is a broken mess, their employers are the ones that probably felt they would be most profitable if they launched in a certain window, even if the game is an unplayable wreck. Well, all I can say is that this is the last fallout product I'll ever buy new. If I get whatever's next, it'll be used. I'm a big believer in buying new to support the developers, but if a developer is going to treat me like this, screw them.

HI !

I too would like to re install my whole game to purge whatever corrupted files I have but I DON"T know how to transfer all my save files. I played around with the save files in my PS3 menu but failed to find any transfer or save icons inside the save file. So if I were to reinstall the whole game, would my old save files also be wiped out ?

If you put a usb memory stick it will show up if you use the triangle button on a save file and select copy. Just copy to the usb and then back again. If you don't have a usb, you could just make or use a different user id as a temp copy location. IE.. select copy the save file and then select the second user id as the destination. Then reverse to copy your game save file back to your regular id.

However, you don't need to delete your save files to get rid of the game data and reinstall.

autosaves are actually pretty useful unless you want to save after every few minutes.

this contributes how?

I wasn't saying they weren't, just to disable them if your experiencing freezing. if this isn't an issue for you, then why the [censored] are you here?

I just registered so that I could say thanks for helping me resolve my freezing issues. I was at level 29 after doing mostly side-quests but couldnt go any futher due to the game crashing every few minutes. After fixing everything you suggested things are working almost perfectly - just played a four hour stint with no issues! Could kiss ya. Now I can actually play my favourite game instead of just cursing at it like I have been doing for the past few weeks. Thanks again.

hey man, no problem that's what they're there for. I'll admit I think it's only a temporary fix. the other day I was playing through one of my older saves (pre-patch) and it just wouldn't play normally. I re-installed everything, went into safe mode blah blah blah, and when I go and start the game up it wouldn't even configure the trophy data, just sat on a black screen.
it's working okay now, but I had to start a new game. getting to be a pain in the ass.

I've deleted my DLC(classic pack),you can re-download it from the Playstation store as long as your signed into the account you redeemed it with, but anyway it seems to have made a difference. I don't think you want to do this mid-way through a game that has it, but if your starting a new game I think it's worth giving it a try. xbox and steam users(If you even come around these parts), I wouldn't suggest it if you can't re-install/download the DLC. not saying you can't I just don't know.

My system freezes when I try and save. I tried everything on this list and it still hasn't helped. I can only progress when all the auto saves are turned off but then when I go to save off the menu the system crashes again. I have a new slim so thats not the issue. There is no point even playing the game now. I didn't even get 2 hours out of the game. I can't believe that this game is even on the shelfs in stores. Biggest disapointment.

I restored my file system.
Deleted most of my saves.
Changed my HUD color.
Turned off the music.
Turned off autosave.

And I freeze within 1 minute of playing.

WAT?

there only there because a couple players and I noticed a difference. as it says in the original post, everyone is going to experience issues and have different ways of them being fixed. there not going to help everyone.

I have a weird glitch. I figured it out. If anybody has the same problem as me with the system freezing when it tries to save, if you go out and kill yourself when you load your game. When I respawn the saves will start to work again for awhile. Its a PITA when you get stuck in a room by yourself(I make sure I always have lots of explosives on me now) but the game works for a bit

I'd like to thank you man. I don't know what it is, but I've been able to play for about 4 hours straight without a freeze. I might freeze soon after the 4 hour mark, but man. It's such an improvement over what it was before. The only thing that I did though was turn off the auto save feature and the kill cam. But still, that seemed to help it a lot! I hope that eventually I'll be able to play without having to worry if it will freeze, as I haven't yet regained enough trust in Fallout New Vegas yet.

Thanks again dude for making this. This should be stickied so that you don't have to continuously bump it.

hey, no problem. It had helped another player so I thought I minus well put it up for other people. As for it being stickied, I think Bethesda would admit there's a problem with their faulty old engine before they showed everyone on here a 19 year old came up with a better technical fix for the freezing than their patch by screwing around with the options and safe mode.

I could care less about the new oblivion, i spent my hard earned money THIS game. I have tried all of your "suggestions and apparent fixes" and none of them work. I think your just a overly dedicated fan that is ok with getting bamboozled by this dev and the publisher. Stop making excuses for fraud and call it what it really is and thats its a faulty product that they knew wouldn't work 100% and still sold it to the public. This game is freezing my system more frequently and the patch did nothing. Where's the accountability regarding these software companies ripping off consumers? I'm not in any way condoning pirating but this is the main reason why scumbags steal software off the net because of these companies abilities to sell unfinished products costing 60.00+ to the public without being held accountable.

I wasted 63.00 dollars of my hard earned money and its a shame because i was really enjoying this game, i mean really enjoying it. :brokencomputer:

I would like to speak with a mod or someone who worked on the game. Myself and millions of other fans PAID your salaries and i would just like a response explaining why is this game unplayable from time to time. Accountability will satisfy me with some sort of explanation regarding the freezing.

[censored] you too, buddy. I spent 140 bucks, and I would like to be able to play the [censored] thing. I could care less about Bethesda/Obsidian, they pretty much robbed me. I said the suggestions aren't going to help everyone, but clearly if you had looked through the thread it has helped some people.

why don't you think about what your saying before you start talking [censored] out of your ass? and I actualy sold my copy I was so sick of it. how's that for a dedicated fan? [censored] idiot...

I don't think flaming each other is going to help. The more I read of Aleister's posts, the more I realize he's just a guy who happened to like this game (and honestly, I would have really enjoyed it if it had been stable for me, so I can't blame him for that). He's trying to help people here the best he can, so what's the victory in trying to get him to look bad?

If we should be angry at anyone, it should be the decision makers in the company that allowed a flawed and broken beta version to be released. The only thing I can think of doing is to sell your copy to a game store as soon as you can and encourage anyone who thinks they're feeling lucky enough to try this game to buy a used version. My only hope is that the steep drop off in sales will be interpreted by the company as gamers reacting to the fact that Fallout NV was released months and months before it was ready. The only language these suits understand is dollar signs, and that's how we have to voice our displeasure. Since we've seen two Fallouts in a row without an Elder Scrolls, I hope we'll see two ES games in a row and Fallout... let's say... Fallout: Nebraska.... will be a next generation title so they'll absolutely need a new engine. Preferably an engine that works on standardized consoles.

In fact, if any of us have the balls to do so, I would reccomend NOT buying the new Fallout in the first month. Firstly, so that the suits understand we're all gun shy about the franchise. And secondly, so that we can see if the next Fallout actually works before we give money to the developer/publisher.

Spreading the word via this and any other game forum should help in this endeavor, and I heartily agree: show them who pays their bills and salaries and make them put forth the kind of effort and product we deserve before we shell out top dollar/pound/yen for their games. Unless of course there is some existential or karmic justice here and this half-hearted effort of theirs really IS what we deserve. Write editorial emails to all of the gaming magazines and really make it hurt. Email the gaming shows and tech shows and voice your displeasure. Go where their money doesn't hold sway.

Shout it to the electronic mountain tops, folks: games like this make us look elsewhere for entertainment. I won't buy another product of Obsidian's or Bethesda's brand-new...if I buy their products ever again.

Hmmm... you see, I wouldn't necessarily encourage that. Personally, I loved Oblivion. It was beautiful (as a PS3 near-launch title), rock solid on my system, and provided hours and hours of enjoyable gaming (except for quirkiness of the leveling system). I know that Oblivion was a Zenimax/Bethesda/Obsidian game, just like Fallout: NV... but the difference is it worked. It worked well, and it was immersive and well executed. I can say without question I'll be getting Skyrim soon after launch (perhaps even pre-ordering if there's some free goodie available). I want to use my wallet to say that F:NV svcked. Not that the everything Z/B/O does svcks. I wish my protest to be surgical and not too broad-brushed.

The thing is, it's likely that the money you spend on any other game of theirs will fund another technical flop beyond that one. And who's to say that Skyrim won't be equally buggy, since the sales from FNV seem to indicate a certain consumer confidence in the participating companies. I'm not trying to convince anyone who isn't already set on buying Skyrim when it comes out. I'm simply pointing out that a company has to take notice and clean up their act when their software doesn't sell because they've previously put out flawed work. It's almost like saying "Okay, I forgive you for FNV's failure. Sell me something new." If not buying their further ventures into platform and PC gaming is the only power I can wield against greedy corporations who allow for products to hit the shelves with this level of failure, then I'm going to wield that power until they start to take notice and make changes for the better.
