For people with freezing issues...

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:36 pm

Hello, I've experienced problems with this game on a scale so large I cannot possibly compare it to any other game I've played. That being said, the game features alone and what you do couldn't be compared to any other game. So, naturally, there are going to be problems with a game that only one company has ever worked on(well, with their engine)

Also, for people who are unaware, patching/ fixing bugs is a very delicate process. After solving your issue and repairing it, you find that multiple other issues arise from it, and you must fix those, now, as well. Fixing them results in more complications, albeit smaller and less noticeable, so they give up and say " I don't want to [censored] with it anymore than I have to, if it works that's good enough for me." and that's the end of it.

basically, patching is a pain in the ass.

the following things are changes I've made that dramatically increased the performance of the game, at least for me and another player(EDIT: now a few, actually) experiencing constant freezing/lag. note that this game is so vast that everyone could experience different problems, and this is a list that will only fix the freezing/crashing that occurs during gameplay or loading. if this isn't an issue for you, the tips below probably won't help you. they won't fix quest/scripting bugs etc. but will give you a more smooth playing experience.

1. google "ps3 safe mode". you'll want to "restore the file system" and NOTHING else. this get's rid of all your corrupt data, so if you have a bad save expect it to be gone.

2. turn off the autosaves. I know, it svcks. but you don't want your game to crash while it's making a quick save. that would svck. just make sure you save everytime the autosave would, or shortly after. the game will occasionally make an autosave before key moments, so don't be surprised to find one if you do.

3. create new data EVERY time you save. just delete your old saves you don't want before you start up the game next time to clear some space.

4. disable the auto killcam that happens when killing someone outside of VATS occasionally. the default should be set to "cinematic". set it to off.

5. while in the settings turn the music off. this is the in-game music that always plays. when spotted by an enemy, it will get more dramatic, which requires the game to suddenly load an audio file while trying to load simultaneous things at once(enemy AI, textures, anything your doing).

6. Also set the radio to off. just slide the thing all the way to the left, i think that just disables the function altogether. this applies to the tip above, as well. (courtesy of DaftenDirekt)

7. try to avoid using VATS in tight spaces (where your player is confined) and definetly avoid using lever-action firearms in VATS (cowboy repeater). it sometimes works, but othertimes you'll find your player just standing/crouching there while you get attacked, and eventually die.

8. changing your HUD(heads-up display) colour to something other than the default orange can improve gameplay(courtesy of oldsnake90)

EDIT: 9. A couple of players noticed that playing offline (not signed-in) can lower the risk of freezes(courtesy of PlayDude77). you may just want to disable the internet connection entirely. (XMB-> Settings-> Network Connection Settings. should be near the bottom)

10. I've seen some posts that say if your game is freezing up a lot exit back to the XMB and reload it. I did this once and where the game is supposed to appear it said "corrupt data" and wouldn't/couldn't launch it. so you may want to try this at yor own risk. if the same happens to you, restore the file system in safe mode again.

since doing the above I've never had it freeze on me in 20+ hours of play. I played one day for 2 hours straight no problem, so it seems to work. I was able to complete a playthrough I had started pre-patch, and before doing the above the game was unplayable. maximum 10 minutes in it would crash. I did the tips above and was able to complete the game with no freezes, although the end game sequence talking about what you did was kind of slow.

if anyone notices these tips help or don't help, please reply. or if you have any tips of your own, feel free to post them and I'll add them to the list. also, some of the tips up there might not necessarily be the problem. I just started turning everything off that would require extra loading, so if your game still works after undoing one of the tips, please tell me and I'll add it as unnecessary. note that if you didn't experience problems before doing any of these, and after doing them start telling me it doesn't matter, you clearly never had any freezing issues, and are in the wrong place.

EDIT: also, understand that the huge size of this game means several different type of issues people will experience. if you notice something that helps you with freezing please feel free to mention it and I'll add it to the original post. I'm sure everyone would like to play their game already, I had to sacrifice a couple good saves myself, it svcks. but if you can play the game in the end it's worth it, you've already put yourself through enough [censored].

I play with auto-save and auto-killcam off as well, and freezing isn't really a big issue for me either. When I do freeze it's only maybe once every 1 or 2 hours, and while it is frustrating, it's not game breaking like other people seem to think.

Just need to get into the habit of saving often/having multiple saves.

i have the habit of saving every time i enter a new area and randolmy i just do wait for 1 hour to auto save.
Ive played for around an hour just with 3 freezes all in freeside just walking around. :banghead:

really pisses me off that they make good changes to energy weapons and will obviosuly make a cracking dlc but never will fix this ridiculous random freezing.

Praise the lord Skyrim will have a new engine I have slightly optimistic hopes that it will be coded properly and wont make me get off my ass to reset my ps3 so frequently ... sometimes im sat comfortably and i have to move when it freezes :vaultboy:

was this after trying my suggestions? I hope not. if it was, I said to disable autosaves. but getting a little (well, a lot) off topic, yes, hopefully skyrim will have a completely new engine.

please don't turn this into another skyrim thread. I'm sick of hearing about it. i'll be happy to hear all about it when it's at least summer...

i didnt do everything you said but im playing a melee character without using vats and i turned off the radio and music becuase it just annoys the hell out of me in the strip hearing the same few songs and yet it has still frozen 3 times merely walking through freeside. The thing is we shouldnt have to take special measures like disabling auto save in the hope of having it not randomly freeze on us. Since patch 1.02 it will always freeze instantly when i have finished trading with a travelling mercant or the trader in crimson caravan company :brokencomputer:

*edit* I just froze upon exiting trade with old lady gibson .......... im unimpressed

have you tried going into safe mode and restoring the file system? I think there's a few files that get installed onto the ps3 that are corrupt, and this will get rid of them.

One thing i noticed that stops a lot of lag is playing with the radio off. I turned my radio back on to see what would happen and it started lagging again :D It svcks because i like to listen to the news but oh well.

I haven't tried #1 or #2, but the other tips are spot on. When the freezing initially started, pre-patch 1.01 and 1.02, so I tried the other suggestions and they worked pretty well. I was able to go for awhile before freezing. I'll have to try the first two.

One thing I noticed after patching to 1.02, the SNIPER RIFLE freezes the game. I've tried it twice and it's happened twice exactly the same way. Has anyone else experienced this with the latest patch?

It seems to be triggered by simply looking through the scope. You can still take some shots, but the only thing you hear is the shot. Reloads, walking, etc. sounds disappear. Then when you try to save, as soon as you click on save the game locks. Again, I'm two for two on this, which really svcks because I love that damn rifle.

Again, I'll give 1 & 2 a shot and see if it makes a difference.

my bad, just re-read what you said and what I responded with, and realized I'm a [censored], anyway, I haven't had issues with the sniper rifle, but it's modded with a silencer. I was shooting off NCR's heads at Helios one not to long ago, and was able to keep playing for quite a while until I shut my system off. if you find anything that helps it, I'll throw it up there for people experiencing similar problems.

I also had my radio volume set to off, but only cuz I hate the damn thing. didn't think it would be an issue as long as I didn't use the radio on the pip-boy, but I walked into a room and heard one blaring on the wall(a whiiiiiillle back) one day, so set that to off.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll throw it up there.

The biggest tip is play on a slim PS3. As of 12/05 developers are no longer required to support legacy "phat" PS3s. Only slim PS3s are supported from now on, this is an official Sony rule

How are the 2 different from each other? I can't see how it would be possible. my friend has one of the classics and he leaves it running for days straight sometimes. as far as I know, he's never had a problem with it.

also, Sony can't just say "are old consoles were obsolete, are bad. but we have these slim ones here!" people would never buy another Sony console again.

That guy's just trolling or something, don't listen to him. He's posting that crap in every thread. A PS3 is a PS3, they all play the game the same.

I'm glad to hear the news about Skyrim. I was worried that they'd use this engine in that game and there'd be trouble. I do know this however, the amount of times I've frozen while simply wandering around the Mojave has made me incredibly frustrated. I really enjoyed Fallout 3, and when NV worked, enjoyed that too. However, I'm actually looking forward to completing this game soon (I suspect I have about an afternoon's worth of work left to do on it). It's fun when games keep you concerned about the fate of your character and in suspense with a well written plot, but most of the suspense and concern I've experienced in this game is whether my system is going to freeze while walking towards that undiscovered location I'm looking for. I'm glad that Skyrim will have a new engine (hopefully one where if you boot up and have Rockband peripherals plugged in, you don't have to change the controller designation and then turn the controller off and on to get L2 and R2 to work) but when the next Fallout gets released, I can guarantee that if I buy it at all, it's going to be months after release and probably used. I firmly believe that releasing a game in this kind of unfinished state is something I don't want to encourage developers to do by paying them money to play the beta version of their game.

Skyrim however... I'm thinking pre-order. :D For the love of god though, please don't release this game half a year early, I'm happy to wait until it's completed.

Yes, Skyrims is the new god, we get it, EVERYONE wants it. But I don't want to hear about it here. This is for people having freezing issues with New Vegas, Skyrim ain't even out yet.

So NO MORE SKYRIM. This is the Fallout New Vegas Playstation 3 Hardware and Software issues, there's a completely different forum for those wishing to discuss the game we won't see for another 11 months.

Fair enough... but I just hope that NV serves as a cautionary tale for developers. Unfortunately, due to the profitability of NV, it seems unlikely.

Well, without giving away anything to anyone who's hasn't played this to the end, I'm about to make my 4th attempt to play through a graphics heavy part of one of the end missions. Did I die 3 times? No, the system just froze. I mean, I can understand the occasional lag or hit in frame rate... but to just have the PS3 give up the ghost? Bad game design. Very bad game design. Perhaps this time I'll try looking at the ground as to not offend the game by looking where I'd like.

That's strange but I've never tried that because the amber color goes with the Mojave so....oh and I'm too lazy to go change it. Still seems kinda of fishy but so does turning of the background music but that helped so guess you never know with this game. Just got to keep tinkering with it I guess.

The restore file system seems to have worked for me. I guess some files must corrupt over time because I had a good 25-30 hours in the game when it first came out without any crashes or bugs at all. Then all of a sudden my game froze a few times and then my save file wouldn't load. It couldn't have been a corrupt save file because auto-save was off and the game never froze while saving manually. After the patch I decided to start a new game.. I had even more bugs than before plus it was still freezing.. After restoring the file system everything is running smoothly. I highly recommend anyone with problems to do this.

odd, I never thought of changing the HUD colour, but I'll throw it up there. is that the pip-boy colour as well? or just the HUD?
