Forum Update Discussion

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:14 pm

First off, I love the new layout. The old forums were drab, dull and boring. They needed an extreme makeover, and that's what they got. I'm not sure if the old forums had a spell check but I like that addition as well.

However, there has to be a way for us users to choose different skins. Light Gray, I think is the color, on black is horrendous. Another thing is the lag, I thought it was my dial up connection but it obviously is a problem everywhere. A much smoother scrolling will be nice. I hate the floater at the top, please lock it down. I would rather scroll all the way back to the top. Lastly, this forum kills my dial up connection. I'm not sure if that is fixable or not but if something can be done to speed it up for us less fortunate dial up users that would be great.

All in all great job on the forums, just like building a new car engine the forums need some tuning to get it purring like a kitten. :spotted owl: Okay... hooting like an owl since there is no kitten smiley. :D

I was having some problems with scroll lag at first, but now it's 100% fine.

The CD thread has had its share of problems (as stated by the pinned topic by GStaff) and this could be an attempt to lose some people or/and attract less people. Just a guess.

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if this attracts more people to CD. The CD regulars may need to put more work in to getting here but for people who hang out in the game forums I imagine CD links will be more noticeable.

Edit: I would just like to point out that this issue is more important than climate change or the global financial crisis

At least one of you is being honest about this :D

I thought with this whole new thingy we wouldn't need to close thread every 200 posts.

Why would we remove the 200 post limit? Nothing has changed in that regard for six years which is when it was no longer necessary for server stability. We've kept it around because super long threads tend to become stagnant and are often difficult to get in to. Having to recreate them every 200 posts keeps them fresh and makes sure the discussion is ongoing because people want to chat about it.

Heh, don't forget the 3-letter word limit on search queries.

That is to keep the load down on the server and I don't think a version update will have changed that. It is annoying since there are so many three letter acronyms that are commonly used here (PS3, DLC, WIP, et cetera et cetera) but that's what the system admin feel is necessary. For what it's worth I'll ask if we can get that reduced to two characters.

I don't like the new theme. Isn't there any way to revert back?

oh, and by the way.. when will we be able to embed images and upload files to our posts, instead of linking to it?

Never, that function was taken away after extensive abuse, and it would make loading even slower than it is now. Besides, think of all the horrid signature banners we'd see everywhere, for every one good looking, well sized banner there's a thousand terrible and huge ones.

I was a member for nearly a full year, with thousands of posts, before I ever even noticed Community Discussion, let alone posted in it. I had normally never scrolled past Oblivion and never even noticed it. So having the link with each game forum section may well drive more traffic here than not. I just tossed up a desktop shortcut for CD, as well as my most frequented areas (like the admin forum) for quick linking. Pretty easy to get used to. :)

I've always thought it was a technical problem. And whilst longer threads to stagnate in terms of on-topicness, I still feel 200 is too low. I've seen threads on other forums which reach thousands of posts, and they're still mostly on topic - and this forum is unusually much more mature than the rest of the forums on the internet, I'm sure we can do it too. Of course, this won't happen, but these are my thoughts.

I also recommend putting the stars back the way the where. Too many now, I think.

Now after you get past Curate or Disciple it's just a mess of stars, and you need to actually read!!!

If you're going to have ranks why not make them obvious -- a test: try to look at only the stars in a post for under a second and guess the rank. Not easy now but it was before. It's not that ranks mean much, it's just that if they are there why not make them obvious.

Some related posts:

Please go back to the old star rankings. I don't know why they changed them...

Gstaff, are the stars and ranks going to be changed to what they were before? There are a lot of people griping about that (including me). :P

I agree. It's bugging me that I went from two to seven stars with no change in rank.

OK, maybe it's just me but who cares about stars and rankings. I'm here to post because I have something to say not because I want to have 20,0000 posts, 10 stars, and some "leet posting member" title.

Quality, not quantity, should be the reason for posting. Some people with few posts say more than some people with 20,000 posts.

Hey, is it just me, or did the list of members having birthdays disappear from the main page?

I just want to say thank you to the higher powers for fixing the problems I was having editing posts last night. THANK YOU! Now if we can just get a darker skin with large font so my eyes can relax, I will be perfectly content. :^)

edit - I just noticed the skin used here in the CD forum is different than the one in the Morrowind Mods forum. Since they're using multiple skins on the forum now, maybe they'll start giving us a choice of which one we want to use?

ehhh this is odd. I don't think I like it. It looks nice, but it's confusing. It took me a minute to find the CD.

My computer is too weak to be able to cope with this new forum, its lags whne i scroll down the page, i personally dont see why they needed to change the style, they could have at least had a version for the weaker computer.

EDIT: Why did they change the star system? And my supermage picture is smaller i think.

I guess they changed it so that everyone felt like "Oh wow i have stars i am a total posting beast" even though people with no post have a star now >.>

Pretty sure that one is on the "To Do" list. Not everything can be done asap though. :)

Or, you know, may be a function/limitation of the newer version of software. It is something that is being looked at as well. No clue as to whether or not it will be changed in anyway.

Well, you need to thank the various admins - they are the ones reviewing and addressing what they can. I'm just a messenger. :)

Dear Administrators,

Will you optimise this forum or is this considered finished.

Because in my opinion, this is a downgrade instead of upgrade. I like the looks, new organisation and all that but the functionality is not here. The forum is slow, threads open like there's bunch of pictures in posts, scrolling is delayed and more.

I really hope that you will fix it so that it is functional once again.

Ultimately, the new forums will be a change for the better. The speed of the changeover was stellar given the magnitude of the task. I appreciate the efforts of the admins on our behalf.

Addressing the minor problems revealed in this shakedown cruise is also appreciated by myself and I hope by other members. Not a common occurrence on the internet, after all.

All that remains to be seen is how well I can adapt to the changes. My ability to evolve to meet the new environment is not something the admins or mods have any control over.

Thanks to all the responsible parties for taking the time to upgrade the forums. It is the Century of the Fruit-bat, after all.

It seems that there is still some issues with the forums.
I just had "error 500" or something and I could not connect to the forums for like 5-10 minutes
