Forum Update Discussion

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 12:50 pm

It's ugly and poorly designed. Why go away from the traditional forum layout? What's with the completely wasted space on the sides? Why does the actual part of the forum that matters (the posts) have to be squished up in the middle? The color scheme is terrible on the eyes too.

I just honestly don't get the reasoning for this "update".

Holy smokes! :aaah:

Someone did an extreme makeover to this place!

Hopefully the admins find a way to make this a bit lighter. It isn't smooth to scroll around yet.

I'll add my comments/observations. Currently using IE.

Colour scheme is a major no-no. Light Grey on Dark Grey. I don't mind the default darker scheme, as I used the blue scheme before, which was different shaded blue backgrounds and white text. Hopefully in a few more days there will be some colour schemes that match the old forum. The MW forum skin I'm not keen on. I understand the idea is to make it themed to the game, but it's "uncomfortable".

The top bar where you sign in and the like is always hidden behind the forum top graphic. Couldn't find the sign in until I'd navigated to another forum and scrolled down a bit, so the graphic went off the screen.

Fill the forum to 100% of the screen width. Wasted space otherwise.

Scrolling is painful, there is a lag which indicates the forum code is doing something else that is shouldn't be. A forum is a place for text and not fancy graphics, so things should be quick and smooth.

Got to agree i would say 95% of us have widescreen monitors if not more and seeing all the posts squished in the middle does not look right at all

I thought with this whole new thingy we wouldn't need to close thread every 200 posts.

Heh, don't forget the 3-letter word limit on search queries.

I noticed there were no PM archiving options either. I'll add that to the list of questions we have for the admins.

Thanks :)

I have no idea. Nice avatar btw, and at first I mind-pronounced your username as "My stick-star".

:lmao: When I used to frequent GameFaqs years ago, my username there was SiMystyk. One user poked fun at my name (not mean, just for fun) and called me 'See My Stick," I didn't use that anywhere else after that as it sounded a bit rude. I never thought of it like that

After (I think) 3 threads since I got here I think I'm getting used to the forum. Besides PM archiving, having the forum a little wider for my 22" monitor would be nice. That's really all that bothers me now.
I'm not fussed by the 'stalking bar' at the top. I forget it's there, now.
The color scheme is fine by me. I used to use Elder Scrolls Gray since I first joined and it's similar to that so I'm used to it.

At first I never like change, but over time I adapt, get used to it. It's like when eBay changed everything from auction page layout to My eBay layout and the forums. I hated it, but now I'm used to it and don't remember what it used to look like.

My old #1 pet peeve is still here - the old Authorization Mismatch that happens when I take longer than 10 seconds (exaggeration) to write and post a message. Though it's called something else now, and written in red text like a warning. I thought that'd be gone now. Apparently not

I don't like the update at all. I used to specifically love the Bethesda Forums because it's layout was so great and simple. Now it looks like every other forum out there which I can't stand <_< . I just hope they at least give us more skins, such as the green one previously shown.

I'm seeing stars!

I came here and thought I'd been promoted to an honorary archpatriarch or something. I just don't lurk like I used to. :ninja:

... another reason to not like the new forum.
Is there some sort of trick to add links to personal messages? Do I have to manually use "[url]" tags?

There should be a little button with an image of a chain and a green plus sign on it. It's in your text formatting bar above the post.

That's true for posts in topics. But when I want do write someone a personal message, there is no such button.
Profile page -> "Send me a message" -> little window with a text area and a submit button pops up.

Found something positive at last. I like the new "converstation-system" for messages.

I can't do a search for my username and get all the posts who quoted me anymore. How will I know who quoted me?

I'm scared :ooo: someone hold me...

Took me a while to actually find community discussion. It should at least have it's own bit on http://www.gamesas.com/.

Although this has been mentioned a number of times, I ask why? Is it a gamesas game? It has no special place on these forums other that a general gathering forum, and it is linked from all the game forums.

Yeah, me neither. I'm finding it hard to keep track of my conversations; the search results page is not very helpful imo.

I think the idea to move each game to its own separate section is good, though. The main forum page was getting too long and rambly.

Yeah, I have to agree with Rohugh here. The CD has nothing to do with Bethesda games or their forums...it's just a big "off topic" place so that off topic stuff doesn't spill over into the real forums.

It doesn't flow well. I wouldn't have expected the general discussion to under a game section. I mean, now I know, I have no problem, but it can be kinda annoying at first.

Hmm, it appears that we are no longer able to click the little box next to our usernames to see our total post count.

Nvm, it came back as I was typing.

Is there some sort of browser/plugin update I need because these forums are moving very sluggish. It takes about a minute for me to scroll to the bottom of the page. Im using the most recent IE.

I've noticed a bug: you can't click on anything about half an inch below the toolbar at the top of the screen. It's as if the toolbar invisibly extends down a bit.

Exactly the size of the bar that holds the Report, Reply, and MultiQuote buttons to be exact.

You can click advanced search, typed your username as the keyword and select a subforum if you want and that works. However, it seems like the database maybe didn't update since before the forums went down, as it only shows posts you were quoted in from March 10th and before. I imagine that will get corrected.

I opted to set the option to "watch all topics I reply in" (but with no email notification, cuz that is a pain.) So when I want to see what threads I have been active in for the last five days, I just select "Managed Watched Topics" in my Forum Settings in my profile.

It's too narrow, that's my only real complaint, too much wasted screen here at my end. I'm not really very fond of the new stars system either, the ranks are the same but everyone has far too many stars now. Not only do the stars mean less now (This doesn't bother me as much, I only had 3 anyway :() it's just confusing for me somehow... I dunno.

I do sort of like the thought that everytime I check out someones profile they know I've been there. Awards for the most stalkerish member?
