FPS-style or FO1/2 style?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:44 pm

Keep the isometric view to the good ol' classics.

I love both views, both have their advantages and disadvantages. But can you imagine a new Fallout game using an isometric view? Its sales would drop like flies, gamers would throw all they get on Beth's studios and 2012 would happen. The series can't go back to isometric, never. Even if it's still an excellent view, Beth established the style of the new Fallouts now, for the better and the worse.

I can imagine it incorporating it as optional, just like in Dragon Age. Which did not make its sales drop as flies.

Beth has established its target audience with Fallout 3, and Oblivion. Which is not exactly the same as Dragon Age's. Though correct me if I'm wrong. And I may be. :P
I'd say, for example, that Dragon Age appeals more to those who loved how the clasisc RPGs were designed, while Beth is going for the new gamers and those not used to RPGs.

Both made good games, (Though I consider Bioware superior), but I "believe" that, in the end, Fallout 3 will have sold more copies than Dragon Age.

Dragon Age appeals to both lovers of classic RPGs and the younger, action-oriented audience thanks to having the option to switch between isometric and third person view. The former prefer one, the latter the other. And even if Dragon Age sold fewer copies (which wouldn't be a lot less anyway, since both sold great), it wouldn't be because it has an option to switch to isometric mode.

Also, who says it must be Bethesda who makes future Fallout titles? Who knows, if New Vegas is successful enough, Bethesda might outsource more Fallout games to Obsidian while they focus on The Elder Scrolls?

I, and most other real men, prefer the FO3-way all the way.

An FO1/2-style Overhead Pointy-Clicky option SHOULD be possible and very welcome, however. Maybe in a "Super Casual" mode with mouse-controlled pointy-clicky movement and unlimited V.A.T.S. Action Points? Yes please.

God why do you people still question about this its been confirmed and we all should know by now without looking like idiots.... Its fallout 3 style, its 1st/3rd person view, its the same friking game engine used on fallout 3, the gameplay is just like fallout 3 but its all tweaked up and its called Fallout: New Vegas

I guess this is what you would expect from a bunch of boneheads that don't keep up with the news..... :/

LOl too funny, I agree though.

You are indeed right Myron. :)
Though Beth did go get those who like shooters to play the new Fallouts.

I hope that, indeed, Beth will hold more development titles to Obsidian. And, when Fallout 4 will come, it'd be great to at least hire Obsidian's writers to provide a better, deeper storyline, characters, setting and quests. :)
Maybe New Vegas is a "test" for Obsidian? I hope so. :D

Its simple really, they aren't going to make a turn based Isometric point of view game because its old style and outdated. People like brand new. Not to say that I don't enjoy a good turn based game I still play fallout 1 and 2, I also still play heroes of might and magic good turned base games but its just an outdated and old style that doesn't appeal to that many people. Good graphics sell people love good and amazing graphics. Now story and dialog writing is a whole different argument. I'm sure 3rd person point of view would fit in but I think what made fallout 3 an awesome game is that you have the ability to be in the eyes of your character. 3rd person graphics still can be good and I'm not going to argue that 3rd person means bad graphics but the turn based system is just considered obsolete compared to today's real time games. If they are going to make a game exactly the same point of view and turn based, same graphics, sounds EXACTLY THE SAME as fallout 1 and 2 they might as well release it as an open source game which is free to download. I wouldn't spend 60 bucks on Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas if it was exactly same as fallout 1 and 2 and developers know that, it all boils down to money. Although 20 bucks for fallout 1 2 and tactics is a pretty good deal....

I haven't played dragon age so I can't argue or relate to anything in that regard.

I disagree with your statement. Bethesda has been known for their first-person RPGs since 1994. TES games provide more lore than many other RPGs, and, in my opinion, are more immersive due to their first-person view. Bethesda has combined exploration with RPGs and their games are like second lives. I have always played RPGs, almost exclusively. When I found Oblivion last year, I believe I found the perfect RPG, one that truly let me play the role of my character with their viewpoint and true freedom. That is my opinion, but I don't understand how more immersive=less RPG.

As I said, Dragon Age gives you the option of using the isometric viewpoint, and for me it's pretty much essential in combat. And if people like brand new, why do they keep buying Bethesda's games which are gameplay-wise still using the same formula as Arena in 1994? Three years before Fallout?

And turn-based is not made obsolete by real time games anymore than chess is made obsolete by football.

Fallout 3 gives you the option to play either in 1st person or 3rd person, Dragon Age gives you the option to play either in 3rd person or isometric. Why not make a game that allows for all three?

I've never played dragon age, but what sells more football or chess? What is more popular to the masses football or chess, thats the mindset nice big corporations and business have and thats why they are making fallout:NV the way its going to be.

So you're saying that because football is more popular with the masses, new version of Chessmaster should play like Pro Evolution Soccer instead, but with chess pieces as players? And that all players should be happy because turn-based is obsolete and this is an upgrade?

You're making a straw man argument here. No one wants the exact same graphics and everything else being exactly the same as in Fallout 1 and 2. We'd like it to be to Fallout what Dragon Age is to Baldur's Gate.

I agree with you. I prefer a first-person view, but I think people should be allowed to use an isometric view. As you implied, a first-person view is not new. I don't believe a first-person view makes a game any more casual or any less of an RPG. People don't all like one viewpoint. There is no best viewpoint, there are only opinions. The problem with an isometric view would be the engine, and it would be even harder to add turn-based combat. However, I believe it should exist for those who want it.

Never said that it makes people happy I'm simply arguing nobody would pay 60 dollars for a brand new chess game if it was exactly the same as a chess game. Sure if chess was more popular and the masses of people played turn based games and not RPGs and FPS I'm sure turn based games would flourish and dominate the video game market. If turn based games were popular and sold well then more video game companies would create more turn-based games. There would be more turn-based games around if thats what the majority of people played. What is popular isn't always right and what is right isn't always popular. Why would a video game company waste their time making a game that nobody would buy, they want to appeal to majority of gamers, majority of gamers play FPS and RPGs. A majority is more people, more people buying a game makes more money.

I'm not going to sit here and say I don't like turn-based games I still play them. I'm simply arguing what makes video game companies money and they do it by hyping and appealing to the majority.

Actually, that's how much people do pay for each new edition of Chessmaster. So you're simply arguing wrong. And a lot of popular Japanese RPGs are turn-based. Including Final Fantasy, which sells millions of copies just like Bethesda's games.

Still, Japanese RPGs like Final Fantasy sell millions of copies worldwide, just like Bethesda's games. And I'm neither American nor Japanese. Which disproves your argument that turn-based games don't sell.

And you don't think people buy chess sets or other board games for 60 dollars or more?

Do you think fallout 3 would have been as successful as it was if it was a turn based game?

Isn't comparing fallout to football and chess is like comparing oranges to hamburgers and tomatoes, it isn't even the same same type of food. And yeah sure people probably spend good money on chess boards and soccer games. I just don't see that many turn based games being sold at my local gamestop or the local video game store when compared to fighting games, FPS and RPGs and sports games.

Fallout 3 as made by Bethesda? Probably not, since they have no experience with designing turn-based games. But it doesn't make turn-based games as such obsolete.

You claimed that turn-based games in general don't sell and that no one would pay $60 for a turn-based game, which is entirely false.

Them not being popular among American developers doesn't mean there isn't a demand for turn-based games. Otherwise Final Fantasy wouldn't sell as well as it does. Unfortunately, although I like turn-based games, I dislike Japanese RPGs for other reasons.

Fallout : New Vegas is using the exact same engine as fallout 3 so I doubt they're going to have it as a turn based combat game, and is probably going to be the same as fallout 3 first and third person view and well probably have the exact same camera system.

Honestly... I hope so... I love playing in third person, so I hope they keep them.

No I argued that nobody would pay 60 bucks for a turn based game that had old graphics and an old game engine. Now you're just spinning things around.

In response to what? Because nobody wanted it to have old graphics and old engine. If anyone is spinning things around, it's you. Just because I like Fallout 1/2 gameplay style doesn't mean I'd like a new Fallout game to have the same engine and graphics as Fallout 1/2. Not anymore than a fan of The Elder Scrolls gameplay style would like The Elder Scrolls V to have graphics like in Arena or Daggerfall.

And you did argue that turn-based games in general don't make money.
