Hello :)

A friend of mine just gave me his copy of WoW, he said he never got to play it because of the monthly fee. Now, I've played MMORPG's before, like Lord of the Rings Online and Guild Wars, and they were good games but not really intended for alot of solo play, which is what I like. I don't mind playing with others so long as it isn't jerks or perverts, but I have to be able to do things on my own.

So what do you all think?

you can solo massively in wow by just doing quests.
you obviously will miss out on some quest rewards that involve groups and/or instances.

but you wont be short of things to do solo.

there's a lo to do, like raid, wait a 5 so hours for patches, stuff like that, but like most online games, the way people act just ruin it for me.

Ignore the twits bashing it (I wager few if any of them have even played it, and just parrot off 'WoW is boring/bad/etc' because it's a popular sentiment :P). It's quite fun when you find some good people to play it with. :)

So anyone who disagrees with you is some sort of automaton, unable to think for themselves and simply following the crowd around? That's a pretty ignorant stance friend. I myself was never drawn very far into World Of Warcraft despite my attempts to enjoy it. It got extremely boring for me once I realized somewhere around level 10 that all you have to look forward to is repetitive quests and 12 year olds screaming at you for not knowing something.(probably the reason I don't enjoy online gaming very much anymore, its in every game) Even after I joined a guild I just wasn't motivated to go any further. I quit around level 40 and despite going back several times Iv never been able to enjoy this game. I just don't see what other people see in it... Is it the social aspect? Can't you form a group of friends in real life too?

Maybe Iv overlooked some grand thing, if so feel free to enlighten me.

You'll either become hopelessly addicted to it or hate it. If you experience the former, expect to have conversations like this with your friends:

Friend: "Dude, wanna come play some football with us?"
You: "Ah... no, I'm uh... going to my... grandparents uh... house... today..."
Friend: "Didn't your grandparents die last year?"
You: "Um... my other... grandparents..."
Friend: "Didn't they die like... before you were born?"
You: "I meant that uh... my... dog died..."
Friend: "You don't have one..."
You: "I have a... appointment with... a... dentist..."
Friend: "Isn't the dentists office closed on weekends?"
You: "...Forget your mortal doings! The world of Azeroth awaits me!"
*hangs up phone

Made me lol.

It's funny how if someone posts an article talking about obsessive gamer stereotypes on here everyone is up in arms, yet as soon as WoW (the biggest MMO for casual players out right now) is mentioned, everyone always talks about how bad it is etc without even playing it. I don't like it, after trying it out, found it's not my thing, and fair enough to anyone else, but a normal person with an ounce of self control won't get addicted to any video game.

I dunno, I think there is some legitamacy to linking it with a drug.

The way how I understand some Recreational drugs work (Correct me if I'm wrong Chemical/Biological people) is that they stimulate Endorphins in the brain, which is the "reward" chemical. And as you continue to take them you need more and more of the drug to stimilate the same level of endorphins.

Compare this with the Leveling system in WOW. Intially Dings (which give pleasure) are fast and frequent, requiring more and more work to hit the next level. Eventually requiring an enourmous amount of playtime to move up to the next.

Thus potentially creating adictive behaviours

Yeah, but Casinos operate in a similar way, and they're not drugs.

I mean come on, it's a video game, a toy. The social aspect I'd imagine would be more addicting than anything else, as if you make friends on there you'd probably want to log on and spend time with them. Anyone who can't log off and go do something else when needed should get their priorities in order, and they're obviously the minority.

Gambiling is also considered addictive... There are support groups for problem gamblers, and gambiling adictions has ruined lives.

I'm not saying that anything adictive should be banned - Far from it. But like Alcohol, Gambiling, and even eating, we need to be open to recognsing active behaviours within ourselves, friends and family, and take action if/when they become a problem. Its okay to enjoy them, even enjoy and participate in them a lot, as long as they aren't causing problems in other areas of life.

If WoW is considered as drug because of its addiction, then it sure is a lame one.

Anyway, I saw it, I played it, and I didn't like it. I am surprised with the number of kids I know (a cousin, friend of a friend etc) who are actually addicted to this game.

In fact my cousin has a really big problem, I spoke to him last week and he's such an introvert he can't maintain a simple conversation. And his brother doesn't help him at all. I would break his game if I could.

Yes but you keep forgetting, gambling isn't a drug. And also, the main difference between alcohol, gambling and illegal drugs is that they aren't toys. Videogames are toys and if you can't drag yourself away from your toys you have the willpower of a small child. And anyway, anyone who is addicted to the game is a sad individual, which kind of proves my point.

It's fun until you finish all of the quests for your race.

Then if you don't have a group, it's really really boring.

To experience the most fun content and to get the best gear you'll have to team up with other players at some point, and probably join a guild. Thats how it is with amost all MMOS nowadays.

I've been playing WoW on and off since 2005. I can't stand the game. Yes, it CAN be fun, but only when I'm playing with my friends. Most of the time, however, I'm wasting my time arguing with the complete idiots that seem to be everywhere in the game and grinding for some piece of equipment that will be outdated in a couple months.

To add to that, I have vivid memories of losing my best friend to this game back in 2004 before I started playing. Before the game, we'd have almost a regular schedule as to when we'd hang out and have fun. After he joined the game, we ended up having to change our schedule around his frigging guild's raid schedule so that we could actually see the guy. We've since moved to different areas and the guy is still completely addicted to the game, spending almost all of his free time on it. The only reason I play is honestly as a way to hang out with him.

In the end, WoW can be fun but it's all of what you make it of. And I honestly have no respect for the people who forgo their personal lives to spend all of their awake free hours playing it. I don't get the appeal, and it angers me. So be careful if you start playing it. But I digress..

So what do you all think?

It plays a lot like Lord of the Rings Online so you should find yourself at home in terms of interfaces, etc. But the game is definitely more friendly to soloing though I'd say it's more enjoyable if you can find some other people to play with.

It's funny how if someone posts an article talking about obsessive gamer stereotypes on here everyone is up in arms, yet as soon as WoW (the biggest MMO for casual players out right now) is mentioned, everyone always talks about how bad it is etc without even playing it. Ditto on this.

Doesnt matter whether its a physical substance or not... Gambiling isn't a drug yet it has addictive qualities.

I'm not saying WoW is a Drug per se, but that it has potentialy addictive qualities.

Its irrelevant that its a toy - You could make the same arguments about willpower to anything else thats potentially addictive (including Alcohol, Tobacco, Gambling, etc) - it being a toy/game does not change or mitigate the potential effects that it can have on the brain.

I think what more or less proved it to me was when I stopped playing for a few months as I had no internet connection. Jumped back onto my level 61 Warriror, and didn't get the same pleasure out of it as I seemed to be going pretty much nowhere fast.... Yet this hadn't Bothered me when I was playing the game daily.

I never played the game, so I don't know much about it. But I think the "twits" don't know no nothing. :)

It's not an addicting game per se, see below., and if you're insane enough to try to kill your friends if they hand you a disk, well, you have deep psychological problems, and need help badly. Sorry, Antibody. :(

Baring that, I'm sure like all things you can play a little bit, without getting addicted. That said, if you get addicted to a game, you're kind of weird. :)

That was a joke.

...

Joke
n.
1. Something said or done to evoke laughter or amusemant, especially an amusing story with a punch line.
2. A mischievous trick; a prank.
3. An amusing or ludicrous incident or situation.
4. Informal
a. Something not to be taken seriously; a triviality: The accident was no joke.
b. An object of amusemant or laughter; a laughingstock: His loud tie was the joke of the office.
v. joked, jok?ing, jokes
v.intr.
1. To tell or play jokes; jest.
2. To speak in fun; be facetious.
v.tr.
To make fun of; tease.

My joke would be defined as 4.a.

That said, I would probably call a friend insane if they handed me WoW, because if they were my friend, they would know how much I don't care for MMOs.
