Gstaff- Please acknowledge ongoing issues with texture scali

Post » Tue May 22, 2012 1:22 pm

I am running 1.4.19.0.4 on a 'Jasper' 360 and am playing from disc. Texture scaling issues are still very much present and are inconsistent in nature, but two items that are most often affected are the Iron Shield and Hide Boots.

I have also tried running from a 180GB HDD but the problem only worsens. I have cleared the cache several times and have started a brand new game since download of 1.4. Nothing will cure this problem; it needs to be looked at again.

If it would help for me to send in my saves I am more than happy to do so.

I have an Xbox Slim, and although I dont notice any texture scaling issues, the game's draw distance is worse. The grass being drawn on the ground in front of you. I can clearly see objects popping into view. This wasn't the case with the release version 1.0. I'm also experiencing sound dropouts for split seconds. I'm curious why all of the sudden Gstaff has disappeared from the forum and Bethesda is quiet in the forums. That is not good customer service. They should be able to afford at least one employee to monitor the forums and answer questions.

I'm not sure about the affordability of an employee being dedicated solely to the forums, but they have been quiet since 1.4 was released. A little post in the 'what we're working on' thread wouldn't go amiss, as well as an acknowledgment of certain problems, such as this one, that users are still having trouble with.

I know they have been working on fixes for the Creation Kit, most likely they are working on the next patch but unknown. Ive played many games where they dont talk much before hand about patches, I dont consider that bad CS, its bad CS if they make no attempt or just give up on patching the game. I dont get either vibe at this time

most of the "MAJOR" game devs do have a full time website person, bungie has URK and waypoint has BS_ANGEL now why doesnt bethesda, a multi-award winning dev, have one....odd to say the least

Blizzard has no full time website person, nor does LotRO/DDO

Blizzard is one of the top game developers around, their diablo, starcraft and warcraft series continue to gain popularity and the games keep getting better.

Turbine isnt too bad, they proved how well a hybrid F2P/Sub based game can be successful.

Yeeaaaaaaaaaaah... A company that made BILLIONS in a month doesn't have the capital. More pure ethical impropriety. I think they're busy accepting awards for this game abroad.

You do know that what they make in sales is not really what they have in profits right?

Im willing to bet that skyrim cost less to make then RDR. $100 mil. in which chase that leaves 400 mil for a staff member devoted to the forums. Heck lets say skrym cost $200 mil. (twice as much as the most expensive game in history, RDR) then that leaves them 300 mil to have a forum staff member. no excuses.

Personally though I've stopped playing in the last month or so until the textures are sorted out and have been having a blast with Dark souls that I picked up recently.

While the Est budget was 100 mil thats only for the project itself and may not include other costs such as utilities salaries of those not covered by the budget, other costs for the building, etc etc.

Its so easy to just throw out simple math to make you look cool and look like you know what you are talking about but there are more costs than just the budget for a company as there are other projects they may be running or other things to keep the business going. Its not like once they are done with a game all the sales from it are pure profits once their budget spending has been met.

we really dont give a [censored] about maths here, we just want the damn game to be fixed for us that have been standing Beth Drones saying "everythings fine some glitches yeh but they are working really hard" stuff sience 1.2, we have been playing the game not to the fullest, not how it should look like, and I mean months of playing an unfinished game that we payed for and it just don't get fixed, so I think is about damn time to get an answer for us, people with texture problems, cuz 3 patches are more than enough for the people arguing that blood on the ice and bookshelves are way more important than the looks of the game (like if I'd like to spend my time looking at that thing when there exist REAL good books), so I don't know, is just my damn opinion, we DO have texture problems, we need a fix, we have waited enough, and I don't know why the hell Beth Drones keep getting their noses with the "My game's ok " stuff on topics like these damn, the OP started this for a reason not to be minimized

I never said everything is fine, i stated there are still issues with the game. what i am trying to point out is the fallacy people seem to think that beth is just swimming in cash from skyrim sales which most likely they are not. I would actually put data fixes like quests and bookshelves to be a higher priority to fix than graphics, but thats just me. Id rather have texture issues and still be able to do quests with no issue than have a graphically awesome game that I cant progress through. To each their own I guess.

I really get your point, believe me, but 3 patches for data "fixes" are more than enough now, I think it's time they make at least 1 for the textures now, if I wanted to play an RPG with great quests and no awesome textures I'd go for Chrono Trigger

only 1 patch was major for quest fixes (1.4)

1.2/1.3 were graphical/engine fixes with some minor fixes to stuff like bookshelves

EDIT:

1.1 - minor bug/quest fixes
1.2 - Performance, texture, engine fixes
1.3 - Fixes broken issues due to 1.2, preventative fix for bookshelves
1.4 - Numerous Bug/Quest Fixes

My game is ok... I don't understand. Heres hoping for Blood on the Ice to be fixed. And those damnable bookshelves of course

Honestly the only massive texture problem I encountered ever was when I went to the College of Winterhold just earlier today. The bridge over, the walls on the outside, the snow beneath my feet were all bugging out. The doors were just blurry walls you had to walk through. I never had any sort of issue like this until after 1.4. Aaaand Whiterun is still kind of iffy but honestly, the issue of texture isn't really something that bothers me terribly. If it were near constant then yeah, but I've only seen it here and there.

Also, four patches in five months is really nothing to turn your nose up at. Yeah it's frustrating that some bugs aren't fixed, but saying that they're just not working on it is kinda of mad silly. I'm the sort of player who can just wander Skyrim's wilderness endlessly. The texture issues are kinda of annoying, and yeah it moderately blemishes the game, but I wouldn't say it rips out my still beating heart and shows it to me. I'd much rather they fix issues with quests and such beforehand, and since they've kind of done that for the most part, the texture thing is likely gonna be further up their priorities list.

Well I'm glad there's some discussion around the topic- hopefully Bethesda will take notice. Like I said in the OP, what I'm after is acknowledgment that the issue still exists, because currently all we have from Gstaff is a sticky post saying 'pick up patch 1.2, which fixes texture scaling issues'.

I'm not going to even attempt to dictate when it should be fixed, I just want it fixed because, for me, it ruins the immersion this beautiful game world offers.

I agree. Textures scale ok on my system, but a guy I tried to help out on this forum coudn't get it to work after a format of his drive and clean install starting a fresh character. Really boggled me as to what it could be. Also, seems like it can just happen and persist. Really weird problem. Maybe something is happening in background eating up Vram? Background processes doing damage to performance causing the scaling logic to scale down? Your guess is as good as mine...

did the person you were trying to help give the game time to fill the cache? because texture issues wont get fixed immediately after removing the contents of the cache. Takes time for the game to load them into the cache. Ive heard anywhere between 30 mins to more is when you shouldnt have much issue with textures.

Yes. When you reach the startmenu, I recommended to wait until the disc had stopped spinning. After that, when you start a new game it should take up to half an hour to finish the caching process - from my experience, and least.
The person I helped got his scaled-up textures back immediatly for about the first half hour of gameplay. After that, textures started to scale back to blurry stuff... That was both a disappointment and interesting - for me, at least. Something's bugging his performance so bad that the textures are scaling down. Weird...

Maybe some harddrives contain bad sectors and therefore bug the cachefile? I've had enough new harddrives in my PC life that were broken right out of the box...

To rule out background processes, maybe signing out of XboxLive is an idea? I assume nobody is signed into messenger and facebook and downloading huge files while playing skyrim ?? I guess people don't to that, but just for the sake of ruling out every passible cause...
