I hit the level cap too early - needs some change

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 9:00 am

"Punished?" What, it's all about you? You weren't stopped any sooner than anyone else, we all stop leveling when we hit 30. It's not like they singled you out for a cap at 30 and the rest of us get to proceed on to 40 now is it?

Been there, done that.

Yes, kicking Lanius' ass at level 22 was indeed interesting and amusing.

And he's now just as dead as he would have been if I'd been a powergaming munchkin taking him on at level 30.

What, you couldn't handle it at 22? Maybe that says something too...

There are apparently some amount of people with the "capped too early" problem, and the are effectively punished compared to the " barely reached 30" group

And if you wanted to end the game at level 22 - well you're missing out on a LOT of game play. I enjoy the game (mostly) and I really wasn't in a hurry to reach "The End" like you must have been

Well, it kind of is a punishment - once I'm capped, any new XP I would have earned goes into the bit bucket - I can no longer "grow" or "improve" myself. There is no reward for solving quests anymore.

The reward should be to find out what happens after the end of the game because of the decisions you made during these quests. Thats the way it is for at least. Leveling up is a nice bonus.

No, I'm not. See, unlike (what appears to be, to my perspective) today's "typical gamer" I don't burn through 3-4 games a month, finish each in a week or so, and never look back. I've got 3 more playthroughs in progress right now, using different weapons, styles, and approaches, a couple of which will likely crawl over every square inch of the game world. One of which will probably beeline to the endgame fight even faster than my first character did.

I ain't missing nothing. I'm also not whining about the game not being designed and balanced specifically for my precise play style like "some amount of people."

This is true, BUT - I am still quite a long ways away from the end - I guess I could ignore most of the quests I have now and only go on main, but it's still gonna be 5 - 15 hours (gross estimate) of gameplay till I reach the end.

And, I really don't want game to end

I've hit the level cap (30) really early in the game - of course I did a LOT of side quests, and did them in order that let me complete more than average number of them, but I haven't even gone after Omertas yet, or even to the Fort

Need to fix the overly fast leveling - maybe dropping XP gained for every quest and enemy killed by 5 to 10% Also raise level cap to 32 (1 more Perk).

If there was no cap, I'm sure I could reach level 40, and that is without using the Fast Learner perk at all.

Ideally, the game would have (relatively) easy levels at start, slower gains at higher levels - the leveling XP needed shows some of this trend - http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Leveling, but in actual gameplay it is still too fast at mid to high level. Main problem is reaching the cap with a LOT of game still left to play - it drops some of the incentive to continue playing

totally agree, its too easy to hit the level cap too early, especially if you start a char deliberatley to go through every area and quest.

hit 30 at one playthrough before even entering the strip.

I was just about to start a topic like this. I hit level 30 about 75 hours in.. I'm now at about 175 hours.. I'm playing some sort of weird story shooter with no chance of upping my character. A half XP mode would be fantastic.. or unlocking the skills and levels. Sure I'd be some sort of immortal thing running around the wastes but I'd at least have the chance to keep expanding on my character. (which really is half of the fun.)
Things I don't understand.. baby deathclaw = 50xp, Mega advlt alpha deathclaw = 50xp... Same goes for most creatures that have greater versions of themselves. No reason a lesser creature should have the same xp as a greater version.
There's so much to explore in this game.. just like F3, that you end up leveling up way too fast if you enjoy just getting out strolling around and exploring. I'm assuming most just follow a story line or only explore a bit.. or maybe use fast travel to get to where they are going and therefore skip over little skirmishes you do hit if you don't use fast travel. On PC obviously these things can be modded. But for people like me who prefer to sit on the big fluffy couch with the big screen and surround sound while playing a game rather than sitting in front of the computer it's not really an option.

A half xp mode.. or even a quarter xp mode for those that like a challenge is really all that needs to be implemented if the developers believe that going beyond level 30 is somehow too powerful. Obviously hitting 30 before you even complete this game makes further DLC's somewhat less tempting seeing as you still have no way to further develop a character you already built.

The one and only complaint I have with the levelling is that you get full XP for kills made by your followers. I knew entering the game that there was a cap at level 30, and I'm pretty sure most other people did as well. But I think you should only get XP for kills you make, and scale the amount you get for partial kills (ie-you cause 30% of the damage, you get 30% of the XP for that enemy)

spent a LOT of playing time getting to level 30, doing all those side quests and thoroughly exploring the countryside

I'm not sure how to balance that against your claim that you hit the cap "too early" - it sounds like it took a good bit of work to get there, not too little.

Well, it kind of is a punishment - once I'm capped, any new XP I would have earned goes into the bit bucket - I can no longer "grow" or "improve" myself. There is no reward for solving quests anymore.

Huh. I figured the story was a reward. (Plus any items, plus any new quest opportunities, plus faction rep, etc, etc, etc. XP is just one piece of it.)

Honestly, I've never had a problem with being "capped" in a game and still having stuff to do.

And I know it took me a heck of alot longer to hit 30 in this game than it did for me to hit 20 in FO3. I was actually pretty pleased with how long it took - it didn't feel fast at all. (FO3, I hit 20 long before I worked seriously on the MQ. And I finished the MQ at ~25 hours. Played a further 50 hours with that character. This game...... heck, I didn't even notice. But I wasn't 30 when I finally hit the Strip at ~40 hours.)

But of course there are a lot of people who don't like grinding and like to level up fairly quickly, so I think the best solution would be to have a setting in the Options that lets you control how much XP you get for tasks and quests. Just three settings would do, Minimal, Normal and Plentiful. Minimal to level half as slowly as normal, and plentiful to level twice as quickly. That would be all they needed to do. Or release an optional patch or DLC. I'd be happy to pay for it.

Is this possible to have a setting for this in the Options? This would be a great idea and would cover all styles of play and players.

Yup. NEW VEGAS has the same problem as FALLOUT3 and OBLIVION. Unlike TES IV however, you do not continue to earn mastery in your individual skills. I'm not playing NEW VEGAS more than once. I got other [censored] to do.

I want to make that one playthrough as complete as is possible (for a cRPG) re: see above.

Hitting the level cap when I'm just starting Chapter 2 (right after "meeting" Benny) takes the helium out of the balloon. It's like everything in life: you want some kind of reward (even if it's symbolic) for your work, other than your grandma spewing supermarket isle-topper "philosophy" about the work being "its own reward."

a setting in the Options that lets you control how much XP you get for tasks and quests. Just three settings would do, Minimal, Normal and Plentiful.

Option. There's a word we don't hear much about on these boards.

I leveled too quickly too. I hope the DLC removes the cap again like Broken Steel did for FO3. I found a reason to go out and start seeking enemies again when that happened. On a side note (yet related one) I miss the "cha-ching" sound when you gain XP from FO3. Too bad I'm a PS3 user and won't be seeing any DLC for quite some time...if ever :(

Post #57:

Game does have Fast Learner Perk that gives +10% XP, and you can get it twice, for a 20% gain. I stupidly used it (1X) my first playthrough, and reached lvl 30 before I had even talked to House

There are a hell of a lot of quests, and ways to solve them even by maxing speech early performing most side quests bar jacobs town, cl, some strip ones and having explored over two thirds of the world.
I'm just level 28 with my second character so no it's not to fast for me, my first character had an intelligence of 2 playing hardcoe and every skill point needed to be placed carefully and most haversting of rewards was out and did not reach 30 till later on despite killing everything that moved.
So just because one character leveled quick does not mean all will.

I agree that the current XP and perk cap is too low - it was the same issue in 3 before Broken Steel came out - I like levelling up and adding perks, and lets face it the perks hardly make you invincible, they're just perks - so slower levelling I think would be bad, just raise the max levels!!!! Surely it wouldn't be too much of a mathematical problem to work out how many XP you'd get by visiting all the locations with the funky guns, and completing all the side missions for a thread, and completing all the main missions - then add a level or 3 on top of that!!

I don't know but surely it must be possible. If they won't do something like this it might be due to time constraints (busy fixing bugs and things) or maybe it's a gameplay decision that they're just not prepared to bend on.

I'll say it again, I'd pay for it. It would make that much of a difference to my game.

I like the "minimal experience" option.

If you go out and explore, and do side quests, you can and WILL reach 30 way before the story is done.

I hope the DLC raises the level cap to 100.

And, demonstrating that different people have different opinions, someone just put up a mod on the Nexus that removes the XP sound, because it bothered him. :D

----------

re: "More levels! More perks!"

Somehow, I doubt they'll destroy the game balance they worked on for so long. The level cap increase & overpowered perks were one of the big problems with Broken Steel - too many perks, way-too-broken perks (like that silly Almost Perfect), way too many skill points.

(Especially with the FO:NV world being less "leveled" than the FO3 one, how exactly would you adjust things for more levels? It's not like you can just shove some lv40 monsters in everywhere..... Also, since there won't be a "continue after the end" DLC, there's not alot of reason for a higher level cap.)

Level cap is not too low; leveling is just too fast.

Here's your solution (it should keep you from flying through the game so fast):

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34759

(Notice the 25% reduced leveling speed)

The game is balanced with the assumption that you will be doing main quest missions regularly, with a good number of side quest missions as you discover new areas and people during your travels. It's not the game's fault If you don't take this path and do all the side quests first.

I think the experience and leveling is fine. My first game I hit level 30 right near the end, and I did a bunch of exploring and side quests (not everything though).

And you aren't punished for hitting level 30 early in the game, you're rewarded. Your reward is the ability to play through the game with a max level character. I do think there should be some sweet level 30 perks though, like the level 20 perks in FO3.

Final quest in main game = Ending credits = no continued gameplay.
Going straight through the main quest = gaining less exp.
Going through most of the side-quests and exploring alot BEFORE going through the last parts of the main quest = gained a lot of exp = hit level cap earlier.

It doesn't make a difference. But most of the experience comes from side quests so if you do all those first you're going to be high level when you start the main quest.

But you're still hitting the level cap while there's still stuff to do aren't you? I thought that was the point.
