I hit the level cap too early - needs some change

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 5:07 pm

I've hit the level cap (30) really early in the game - of course I did a LOT of side quests, and did them in order that let me complete more than average number of them, but I haven't even gone after Omertas yet, or even to the Fort

Need to fix the overly fast leveling - maybe dropping XP gained for every quest and enemy killed by 5 to 10% Also raise level cap to 32 (1 more Perk).

If there was no cap, I'm sure I could reach level 40, and that is without using the Fast Learner perk at all.

Ideally, the game would have (relatively) easy levels at start, slower gains at higher levels - the leveling XP needed shows some of this trend - http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Leveling, but in actual gameplay it is still too fast at mid to high level. Main problem is reaching the cap with a LOT of game still left to play - it drops some of the incentive to continue playing

I'm very much in favour of slower levelling, I got to level 30 (which IMO is powerful enough) too quickly, before I'd barely touched the main quest.

I did every quest I could find and explore a lot and had to go out and farm enemies for the last couple of levels to get to 30 before taking on the final quest.
I have no idea how one can reach the cap too early in this game.

you should be able to go to 100 or just forever. just no perks, health, skill points or anything else after 30. the game is more fun if youre leveling up.

Oh, that's easy:

You just spend a lot of time and effort working at it, deliberately calculating your way to the top despite any and all obstacles thrown at you.

Then blame it on poor design and demand it be changed to suit you and to hell with people who don't lie awake trying to figure out how to reach cap as quickly as possible.

If there has to be a level cap, and I wish there wasn't one at all, I'd be ok with leveling slower. When I'm trying to get away from something because I don't want the XP and Boone is blowing heads off, I'd rather not watch the little meter ringing up his kills...but I still want him with me.

Yes, slower leveling would be great for an explorer type like me. Not everyone races through the game.

I thought the leveling was okay, personally. You never become a superpowered god even at 30, so things stay challenging, and there's still new stuff to be discovered in the form of unique weapons (as long as you don't go looking on the wiki for where everything is, of course).

That said, I wouldn't mind if the gaps between levels between 20 and 30 were just a bit more spaced out in Fallout 4. :)

There is a slower leveling mod over at Nexus.
I believe it works on existing saves.

I used the 1/2 speed leveler for FO 3.

I wouldn't like to see the level cap removed or raised, but please, slow levelling! I couldn't agree more. I like to work a bit to raise my level. I like to think "Jeez, it's been a long time since I've levelled up." And I hate reaching the cap when I'm still playing and there's lots more to do. I feel I might as well quit.

I agree the first few are ok, but the higher you get it should slow down a lot. The last ten should be very, very slow. You shouldn't reach the cap until you've done everything in the game, and maybe done a wee bit of grinding.

Personally, I find myself avoiding XP. I don't pick locks or hack terminals, and use my speech skill sparingly. If they gave a reasonable amount of XP for those skills instead of the absurd amount they do now it would help a lot.

But of course there are a lot of people who don't like grinding and like to level up fairly quickly, so I think the best solution would be to have a setting in the Options that lets you control how much XP you get for tasks and quests. Just three settings would do, Minimal, Normal and Plentiful. Minimal to level half as slowly as normal, and plentiful to level twice as quickly. That would be all they needed to do. Or release an optional patch or DLC. I'd be happy to pay for it.

Why don't you post a poll and we can see what everyone else thinks. They might pay attention to it.

I honestly really dislike the entirety of the fo3/FNV system of skills and leveling...
But it was MUCH better in NV.
You don't feel like a maxxed-out god when you hit level thirty, and you can still have some fun.

But yeah. Slower leveling would be an improvement.

I agree - and an option to change the rate of XP awarded (as suggested above) would be brilliant - then everyone is happy :) But definitely it should get harder/longer to level up the higher you get, as I didn't feel that was the case at all.

Very weird response - so because some people are too lazy or unintelligent to take on AND solve many of the side quests, I should be punished for doing a good job?? And btw : I spent a LOT of playing time getting to level 30, doing all those side quests and thoroughly exploring the countryside

The lazy and unintelligent should be punished by not reaching the top levels - trying to fight the final battle as a level 25 (or lower) would be an interesting experience for them

Don't call people lazy and unintelligent.
And if you do a good job at getting exp then it's suppose to be a good thing that you reach the cap earlier than others.
It's not a punishment to reach it.

Well you didn't find all the quests then, because I didn't do anything other than explore a lot and do every side-quest I found, I certainly didn't have to do any grinding (which I detest anyway). I've been at level 30 for around 15 hours of play now, and still haven't reported back to Crocker (I'm doing an NCR game) that the Boomers are on side. I'm about ready to do that, after I've finished the quests that I found at Aerotech (which I only just found).

"Punished?" What, it's all about you? You weren't stopped any sooner than anyone else, we all stop leveling when we hit 30. It's not like they singled you out for a cap at 30 and the rest of us get to proceed on to 40 now is it?

Been there, done that.

Yes, kicking Lanius' ass at level 22 was indeed interesting and amusing.

And he's now just as dead as he would have been if I'd been a powergaming munchkin taking him on at level 30.

What, you couldn't handle it at 22? Maybe that says something too...

First play through it took me nearly 49hrs before I hit 30, and I didn't even start the main quest. I'd say that's just fine, but there's no shortage of mods which will lower the amount of XP gained either from kills, or hacking/lockpicking.

There is and it's excellent. I'm at 27 and nearing the end of the game and I've explored everything I could find. Game is much better with slower leveling.

Well because of the ending sliders I sometimes don't do a certain towns quests just to see what effect it will have on the ending sliders.
So yeah, I skipped the Kings and Atomic Wrangler quests for example because I wanted something saved for the next playthrough.
I don't think one should do all quests and instead save some for following playthroughs but maybe that's just me.
I just plan on making the game last. :P

But yeah, I kinda liked not reaching max level by the end because that meant that I never hit that cap and got mad that I couldn't get any more exp, skill points or perks. :)

Thanks for the tip, I will use that for my next run. IMO it's the journal side quests at fault, some of them can net you way too much XP.

Well, it kind of is a punishment - once I'm capped, any new XP I would have earned goes into the bit bucket - I can no longer "grow" or "improve" myself. There is no reward for solving quests anymore.

If you are playing a non-combative character type you need the lockpick, hacking, speech xp to progress in skill.
