Homosixuality in New Vegas

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:30 am

This is not a good idea for Many, many reasons - primarily because (like the sixual stuff) it is Not needed to sell a good video game. Why add something to a video game that the majority of the population might be offended by? What would the point of adding it to the game be? Realism?!

I have a gay best friend so this is not any issue for me personally, but I think it would be a Very bad idea to add it to any video game like this - it would just hurt the game's sales in the end.

Well, if they don't add homosixuality they shouldn't have heterosixuality either. It's fair that way. I am straight and I honestly fail to see how having both hetero and homosixuality in a game could offend anyone. I'll say it again: all or nothing.

Thing not being "needed to sell the game" is not good enough of a reason not to include something.

I don't think the majority of gamers will be offended by homosixuality existing in the Fallout world, just like it exists in ours. And it has been portrayed in the games to a bigger or lesser extent since Fallout 2. There are straight, gay and bisixual people among both gamers and developers.

And having both straight and gay romance options didn't seem to have hurt Dragon Age sales.

That is an ethical argument, not an economic argument or a political argument. On the ethical side, of course I agree with you as should anyone who loves and believes in Freedom of Speech. But thats where the argument ends, and companies don't add things to games because they are morally or ethically correct - people don't buy video games because they are morally or ethically correct either. In fact, adding homosixuality to the game Can and Will offend alot of people who are very opposed to it still (in this country at least), and That has the very real impact of turning people off or generating negative publicity.

Would it really impact sales negatively? You nor I could say, but I don't think the corporate calculus is going to take that argument to the bank - and for that reason, I really doubt they will put it in.

I myself wouldn't mind it, but nor would I want to see it in my face in a video game that I'm there to enjoy.

Well, we could look at the sales of Dragon Age, which has both straight and gay romance options. I very much doubt it had any impact on the sales whatsoever.

Well it didn't seem to effect the sales of Fable, Fable II, and Dragon Age: Origins

Your probably right, maybe its time to throw it into the game - full force and see what happens. Thats a risk (if it is a risk) that Sawyer would ultimately have to make, and one that the corporate folks above him may stomp-out for the reasons I have stated above - but maybe not. :)

I like the idea of having it added as Options, so that I don't have to Watch it or Experience it - that would be taking it too far if forced upon the player, I'm sure that would cause issues. But if it was optional, letting the player select what kind of experience they want to "deal" with, I would have no problems whatsoever if it was as prominent as heterosixual stuff.

Not that any of it is necessary, but the fade-to-black is a nice compromise for the games I think.

Yeah, people that think a game with homosixuality in it won't sell are so last century.

It's not really a risk anymore nowadays, with Dragon Age or GTA: The Ballad of Gay Tony selling pretty damn well. The latter even has "gay" in the title, ffs. How risky can gay relationships in a game be if a DLC with "gay" in the title is a bestseller?

Yeah I think you were directing that at me? I hope not.

That's not what I was saying, I was talking about having it thrown in the players face, being propositioned, etc. I would actually prefer what Nextmastermind suggested - that it not be in the game in any form as opposed to forcing it on the player. The Ballad of Gay Tony is quite funny, but that's not what we're talking about.

How about the player being able to proposition the NPCs? And you don't need to look any further than Zevran in Dragon Age. Or the bisixual alien girl in Mass Effect. It didn't seem to hurt BioWare's sales. If anything, the Fox News outrage gave them extra publicity.

Actually I think that would be cool, like I said having it as options is even better because then the game would appeal to Everyone (one would hope anyway). I just don't see that its necessary to have it in the game, to make the game good - that was my original point - don't turn this into a "People that think X are so last century" - as now your into name calling.

I have never been a fan of having the heterosixual crap in the game either, a stance I have held consistently here - and as such I am not a fan of having homosixual relations in the game. Just leave it out IMHO, its a video game - the modders are going to pollute it to death anyway with all manner of the stuff. The good part there is that mods really Are optional.

Well, a lot of things about any game is not necessary. Anyway, can you even think of a game where sales were hurt due to inclusion of homosixuality?

I think they should add it. I like this idea, but they shouldn't make it blatant.

I think they should add it but not try to hide it either, like, if they have any sixuality at all they should also have homosixuality as obvious as the rest of it, if you know what I mean.

Then there is no need for heterosixuality in it either. I say all or none.

In my opinion there shouldn't be any romance at all. :P

In a post apocalyptic setting, people would have six with whoever was available.

...No they wouldn't. That's ridiculous, maybe you'd be banging whatever you could after a Nuclear war but I (And many other people) wouldn't. If the main character is straight, and he probably is, he's not going to have six with another man just because he's "available". He might not even have six with women for no reason either. Physical relationships in the FO universe regarding the main character are a big no no. I hope you're reading this Obsidian. :)

Did you play Fallout 1 and 2, which key developpers are now at Obsidian? :P

Physical relationships with the player have been part of the series since the start. Why should it stop now?
If there are prosttutes and brothels for the population, then the player should be able to use their services. It's part of the game world. :D

As such, gay and lisbian phyisical relationships should be available in such brothels for those who want to use them, like it was back in Fallout 2.

Well that's your opinion, I have mine and I reckon people would. Humans have six, it's what they do. It's up there with eating and sleeping, for most.

He might not even have six with women for no reason either.

No, but for fun. People don't only have six for reproduction you know.

Also, like someone said before about prisons, but a bigger scale, although there are also women in the wasteland as well.

Rapists have six with whoever they want, people don't.

I know, there's even a Karma Sutra perk, but just because they've got sixual dialogue doesn't mean it has to be physical. I've got no problem with homosixuality...

It just seems completely unnecessary. But, of course there's little harm in it being in there.

This.

Well, in FO2 it was totally optional. You had to initiate it and if you found yourself in that dialog branch you could get out of it before it wa too late. Though IIRC if you weren't paying attention you mi8ght get the ball gag. Seems to me there was the allure of scoring a power fist. The weapon kind that is. LOL

Indeed, I am just an old geezer that doesn't see the logic in having in the game - and I'm very likely seeing more potential controversy in the gay and lisbian encounters than really exists. If they are done right, and not overly pressed into the players face (any more than say, Nova was) and it doesn't cause some BS negative-press that hurts the game - then I see no harm in it. I just don't find much use for it in the game personally, and tend to come out strongly against it these days because (honestly) I'm tired of seeing it as an issue all the time. :)

If they do add the option in, I think if they use the fade to black from at least Fallout 2 that would suffice.

With regards to the bisixual girl in Mass Effect, that was Liara who was a member of a monosixual race (they all look female).
