[WIP] Horseman - Mounted Combat for Skyrim

I'm glad you're looking into balancing the mod with game play. I was just about to recommend some things but I've seen pretty much everything I was going to recommend (perk tree for player and/or horse, limited charge function, etc) has already been brought up. One thing I might add is allowing only short bows to be used atop horses, but the thing is despite what was said prior to Skyrim about short bows and long bows, I don't think any real difference existed in the game come the release. Ah well. A thought's a thought, I guess.

Anyway, everything looks great so far. Good job!

Thank you, it will be available once SKSE is out :smile: (which is...very soon :tongue:) Ya, I could detect which directions the player's camera is looking in my script. The problem here is, the player can actually move the horse by moving the mouse (especially when the horse is walking/running). In such case, there is no independent camera rotations for the rider. So there is no real dynamic aiming with the mouse. The best I can come up with is allowing player to shoot arrows 90* sideway and 45* from where the horse is looking.
What about the game.setcameratarget(actor) command? If you set an invisible actor without collision looking in the correct direction, maybe you could aim.

Thanks for the update, rongphale! I guarantee if you pull this off; it will be a VERY popular download.

Maybe for archery, since that is inherently less accurate on a moving horse, the perk tree can be used to increase the accuracy / chance of hit. Tha way, picking an enemy in the 45 or 90 degree axis or arc, and when arrow released, it just uses a % to hit caclulation based on the perk level. No actual arrow travel physics involved. At least, this cound be for a workaround until a more accurate model could be applied.

Spear / lance on frontal impact and mounted enemies with same could make jousting encounters possible!! Now THAT would RAWK!!

I havent got a PC so i havent read this thread but...

An idea ive had for years is...

Make the combat more realistic by having a script that makes the enemies stand still (but still always face your direction in their stance) instead of chasing you (and your horse) around like mad men.

That way they could brace as you go in for the charge.

You could then charge at them (as horse combat would be in real life) to either swipe with your sword/axe etc or use your spear as a lance.

You could also still mix it amongst them as your video shows (though that would be more dangerous for your horse.)

Maybe the animals would still chase you but a human would be wise enough to know that running after a horse would be useless and tireing.

The reason why I was hesitant to implement spells because... they make player very, VERY overpowered. Thinking of shooting fire balls while galloping at full speed. You basically can kite any enemies. Enemies will also have very hard time hitting you. Same goes with healing spells or any defensive spells, since player can out run every body (except dragons), they can just attack, run, heal, and repeat. If I could come up with some balance, then I would love to include 'arcane mounted' in the mod :)


For jousting, or NPC mounted combat, I'm working with the Merp team on such feature. Stay tune :)

Hey there, I really like your idea amgepo, you gave me alot of work-around on something impossible to achieve in normal mean. I will try this out, hope it would work :)

This looks good.

It might be far-fetched, but I'm also hoping for NPC to have the ability for mounted combat. (I imagine a group of Imperial Legion cavalry clashing with Stormcloaks, or a Ulfric's cavalry guard charging zealously on Thalmor soldiers)

Am I the only one who saw the YouTube video and immediately thought, "Oh yeah, Mount and Blade, high-def!"

This is a great-looking mod, and once it's polished up a bit, I'll definitely be downloading! I would love to see NPCs start mounting up and bringing on the fight.
