How can I win this argument?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 12:23 pm

As I keep saying, the problem here is that COUNTRY seems to be a word with different definitions depending on context. See most other posts in this thread for examples and reasons.

When it comes down to it, Scotland is called a country, by whatever definition. The UN definition is purely political.

Ergo, OP is neither right nor wrong, nor is his friend. Just go by what everyone calls it.

Exactly...

Exactly...

And most people, whether us commoners or our government*, call it a country. :)

No it's not. Yes, words can be interpreted in other ways than their denotation, but if the discussion is if X or Y constitutes Z, then the denotation of Z is used, not its possible connotations - in this case, Scotland is a country, according to the denotation of the word 'country'.

Ergo, OP is neither right nor wrong, nor is his friend.

OP is 100% completely wrong, Aila. Not just that, he refuses to see or acknowledge all evidence to the contrary. I appreciate you trying to hold the middle ground, but your efforts are misplaced in this case.

I've seen the UK being referred to as a sovereign state, yeh. To be honest it's all a bit confusing, not really sure there is a 100% correct answer to this thread really :P

Personally, I'd go with the option that isn't going to piss off pissed Scots*.

*This may seem like a tautology, but they can manage to be even more pissed (in both senses) than their baseline :o.
Spoiler
No offence taken?

You just contradicted yourself by saying they are under the UK

Since when does having a flag and a population and being listed in the atlas make it a country. Is [censored] Alabama a country? No.

Try telling that to Norway, France, Poland...

I think this needs looking at.

Edit: Whether the OP was here to cause problems and arguments it certainly has. This is staying closed as I have had to edit a number of posts. It seems that there are some of you who are unable to discuss a topic without resorting to personal attacks.

..... and there are those members who want to include discussion of politics and religion in CD?
