How old is the average New Vegas enthusiast?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:07 pm

This is just me being curious- I see a lot of posts that would seem to imply that a fair number of regular posters are younger, which I thought was suprising considering the age and nature of the Fallout franchise.

I'm putting this in New Vegas because I'm not looking for anyone that just casually played Fallout 3, but someone who was obviously a big enough fan to keep tabs on the next release. I know the game is rated 'M', but please be honest if you are below 18.

Also feel free to post, for example, I'm 21. :tops:

Fallout 3 reached out to a more casual market so the halo players would give it a glance

Ultima III was one of the first CRPGs I played, liked it so much I went back and played Ultima II and it's probably what got me hooked on RPGs. I also recall text based adventures like Zork 1, 2 and 3.

My first gaming system however was the Atari 2600: Space Invaders, Asteroids, Adventure, Missile Command, etc.. :P

The Zorks were my favorite text/adventure game - man I loved those! Ultima III was the first game I modded, I can still remember the combat musac in my head. :P

I didn't have the 2600, but I started-off with a Radio Shack TRS-80 that ran Dig Dug and a few other games - had to load them off cassette tape. My Commodore 64 was my first hard-core game system, had it for 3 of 4 years and something like 30 games in the end - all run off 1541 240k floppies. :D

Man even thinking about these games takes me back...

18 and life, and counting. 18 and life to go, sir.
But, judging by the polls, we need more Grandpa's playing this game.
By far this is my favorite series, because I love the feel of Americana, and I enjoy preparing for the apocalypse.

I'm 16. Anyone who thinks a 16 year old can't handle playing a Fallout game is hugely mistaken.

Man I wish everyone was like that, it would be a much better world :sadvaultboy:

You might change your mind when you get older. (Some) people drink for different reasons when they get older. When you're young people think it's cool to get hammered and do stupid things.

When I got older I developed a genuine appreciation for high-quality whisky and wine...even beer. I appreciate some types of alcoholic beverages for the craftsmanship and flavor (yeah, it's an acquired taste)...it's been a long time since I drank because I wanted to get drunk and "party."

Now, that's not to say that alcohol doesn't make an excellent social lubricant, but that's not the same thing as, "wooooooooo let's get wasted bro's...yeeeeehaaaaaw!"

I think he just means the stupid people who think its cool to puke their brains out. I love the taste of beer and it is definitely an acquired taste, gagged the first few times I drank it.

I saw what drinking did to my Grandfather, it killed him. He threatened to kill my father and grandmother an uncountable amount of times. He chased them out of the house with a chainsaw, he threw his life away for alcohol. He was a great man, but one night his co workers where drinking beer and he thought they would think he wasn't cool if he didn't too. That was the start of the end. He had a heart attack. I saw my other Grandfather kill himself from smoking, he died from lung cancer. Both of them I hardly knew, I could have known them better if they didn't make such foolish choices. Drinking and smoking is something that harms your body and mind in so many ways I don't see why anyone would do it. I know because I'm young it seems that I don't know anything and can't make real decisions but that's all wrong. I have decided I won't hurt my family the way my Grandfathers did. People pay hundreds just to quit drinking or smoking. It's better just to never start in the first place. It makes your life so much shorter and can ruin those around you. I think I'll stick with water.

Alcohol doesn't affect everyone that way, but I'm sorry that happened to your family. I'm certainly not trying to convince you to drink (in any way, shape, or form). I'm just saying that not everyone uses alcohol that way, and you shouldn't judge people so quickly for casual alcohol use...when used appropriately it's not harmful to most people. Some people are affected in extreme ways by alcohol, and I know some of those people (and they've learned to stay away from it), but it doesn't affect everyone that way.

If you've decided not to touch the stuff then good for you, I would just encourage you to keep an open mind about others, though, because it's something that's quite normal and harmless for those that don't have problems with it.

I'm not saying all people who drink are evil drunkards. Lot's of my friends parents drink and I have no problem with it if they aren't making fools of themselves or threatening my life. I just think it's just better to never touch the stuff in the first place. What if you are heavily affected? It's a big gamble, one I'm not willing to take. It's good you are not one of those fools who drink for the sake of wanting to get drunk. I just think if there wasn't alcohol is the first place we wouldn't have drunks like my Grandfather (and Homer Simpson ). Things would be a lot different. Alcohol ruins things for other people too, drunk drivers kill tons of people each year. What if there were no drunk drivers? Lives would be saved. etc

That's true. Don't you think people would just find other ways to be idiots, though? I think what you're talking about are symptoms to a bigger problem that won't go away just by taking away the tools people use to carry out their stupidity. :P People need to learn to be more responsible. Wrapping everybody in bubble wrap isn't the solution.

Anyway, if you have a family history of alcohol issues you probably should stay away from it, because that stuff is hereditary. We're derailing the thread now, though. :D

Of course people would find other ways. I'm not saying drinking is the cause to all problems. Just parts of it.
I believe there is an Einstein quote that says something like this
"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."

Agreed, kinda like J.E. Sawyer and Francis on the Meet The Devs thread. BTW I also just noticed I made Curate

Hehe...so true.

You know what happened the last time they tried to outlaw alcohol, though, right? It created a black market that in turn made a bunch of dangerous criminals filthy rich. :D

Good for you friend, I'm 18 I haven't touched any alcohol/drugs/or anything of that nature that will hurt my body. Its honestly just not worth it to have pictures of me drunk on Facebook with my pals, or even worse get hooked on some kind of stimulant. (I feel like I'm one of the few of my generation who doesn't want to go out and get hammered or high.) :tops:

Seems we're a rare breed these days. :)

Great Scott, I thought I was the only one around our age that hadn't turned into a drunken, gibbering fool. Well, I might still be a gibbering fool, but at least I got sense enough not to drink myself to death and beyond.

But of course, the Prohibition era is a very interesting subject in history. Even though it cut down alcohol drinking it propelled mobsters to the top. Just one of the ways history helps us predict what will and can happen in the future. Did you ever see The Untouchables? One of the best Prohibition/Gangster movies in my opinion.

Well, being 45, I don't feel quite so lonely what with all these other "mature gamers". With this many people my age around though, you'd better not get us started talking about old school P'n'P RPGs. I would stick around to see how this goes, but It's time for my nightly cigar and dunkelbrau. Cheers :foodndrink: where the hell's the emoticon for smokin' a cigar? Oh yes, here it is :flame:

I'm 24.

As for the alcohol talk, it's called drinking responsibly. I think beer tastes like horse urine (long story :whistling: ), with the exception of Guinness, and I'm usually more of a Jamesons/Jack Daniels/vodka drinker usually. But the thing is, I know my limit, and I don't drink to get drunk.

If you know what you're doing, alcohol can be a pretty good thing.

Also, I've done some bartending work, so responsible service of alcohol is srs bsns.

I have no problem with people social drinking as long as its responsibly ingested over a period of time, Not just you doing three beer bombs and passing into unconsciousness in a puddle of your own spittle and vomit. :P (What irritates the hell out of me is these kids I see who are in the 13-16 age range talking about their crazy nights and all the drinking/drugs they've done, especially when they stand up and vomit all over the floor of our classroom. Its just disgusting and disgraceful, leaves me wondering how clueless the parents of these kids?)

The TRS-80 was my first computer too. My dad used to bring tapes of games home from work that someone had copied for him. I had a few text-based adventure games and a bunch of arcadey rip-offs like Donkey King...

We played Commodore 64 games (Contra?) in high school, and Doom came along when I was in university and blew me away... bought my first sound card for that game. Ah, I feel old.
