How the oblivion did Skyrim get game of the year...

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 4:02 am

There's no GOTY clause stating "The GotY must be a sandbox game. It can be absolutely terrible, crash every 3 minutes, and steal your credit card info, but if it's the only sandbox game then it wins"

It's a good game sure, but I wouldn't say it's the best of this year.

so what's your GOTY?
all games I picked up this year svcked except skyrim and batman arkham city, they both have nice world to explore, good gameplay and great replayability.
I tried dark souls and its total crap, ridiculous controls, no class differences, and an overall boredom.

Your issues are in the minority.

The majority have spoken and it's GOTY.

Sorry to hear you're having all those problem with the game though. But to say it doesn't deserve GOTY because it doesn't run well on your system is self-serving.

What it needed was a compelling story, or at least a finished one in many of the questline cases. Half the guilds are over in an hour or two. The civil war feels incomplete and nothing changes. NPCs spout things that make no sense. Or repeat the one line they have over and over. It isn't that hard to put conditionals on this stuff.

In the end it feels like a first person action adventure game in a market where there are much better action/adventure games. It may have an open world, but X3: Albion Prelude has one too, has more to do, and is much more complex.

Btw, game runs fine on my system. I don't have crashes, my issues are with the game itself not being finished.

You know its funny because I get on the forums and all I see are people that are having problems in the game but i have been playing sense the midnight release and have over 200 hours and so far no bugs, now it has froze once or two times but really nothing to stop playing the game over. It got game of the year because the pros out weighs the cons.

He's on console. Since almost no one else on XBOX is having these problems (if they were, there would be a lot of outcry, I'm sure), then there's two possibilities:

You have a corrupted copy of the game

There is something wrong with your XBOX.

Seriously, millions of other XBOX users are not experiencing those difficulties, so it's not an issue with the game itself.

What is your save file size? Seems to be the cause of lots of grief. I have been reduced to picking up every weapon and placing them on corpses to minimise file bloat. When 1.4 gets rid of ash piles, that will be a start.

true
also, there weren't many 200+ gameplay hours games around last year, its GOTY just by considering the playing time value, not counting the astonishing graphics and the immersive experience.

It's GOTY because none of the other games are even remotely as open or diverse as Skyrim is.

You don't judge Skyrim on it's own for the GOTY award - you judge it against the competition.

Skyrim has no competition - it's the best game on the market. Period.

Plenty of competiton, see Deus Ex: HR, Portal 2, Arkham City. All of which had not nearly the sheer amount of size like Skyrim, but you know how that saying about quality and quantity goes...

I think all those problems you mention are caused by save-game bloat.
I experienced them on my first play through, but have not come across them during my current one. The latest patch may have helped.

Quest bugs are a bit annoying. But I've got the hang of avoiding most of those, like not picking up items which have someone's name on them, like Pantea's Flute, until I am given the actual quest to fetch them.

Skyrim or Modern Warfare.....Even I'd say the title should go to Skyrim because of how much it offers, vast landscape, tons of content, the option to do what you want, when you want, however you want, you can be whoever you want (Racially, sixually and from an RPing perspective), and in the future Skyrim will be able to offer tons more content via DLC than anything else, new story, new items, new location, new charcters. Other games don't offer half as much half as often.

Deus Ex: HR = that yellow thing...
Portal 2 = for kids
Arkham City = maybe the only real competitor here

Damn, nice arguments guys. You sure beat me with your intelligent perspectives of the matter and have convinced me into mindless Skyrim fan boyism.

how are they uneducated or stupid? Do you even know what "uneducated" means?
isn't deus ex yellow? because if yours it's not, my copy and all the reviewed copies have issues, because everything is yellow
isn't portal 2 for kids?
isn't arkham city the only good game mentioned?

Nope, nope and nope. As I said before, uneducated assumptions. In this case education = play the damn game before using ridiculous and childish hyperboles so you can defend your precious game.

like a baws....
haters gonna hate, there's not much to do about it.
still IN MY OPINION all those game fade out in comparison, both as content and longevity. (I don't own Portal 2)

I own skyrim on 360. Have 7 characters...Countless hours played since Nov...

Its the BEST game of the year... Bottom line.

Feel free to bring up any other game thats better.. But it all gets shadowed by skyrim..

You're definitely right Skyrim far outdoes them in sheer size and thus amount of content and longevity. I never argued against that. My whole point in bringing up those titles was the quality vs quantity thing, the former of which Skyrim rather lacks in imho.

I have deus ex, and it's indeed yellow, even the fog is yellow, cmon!! I usually stop playing because of the yellowness of everything.
i have batman too and as I said it's a great game and probably the only real competition to skyrim.
I don't have Portal 2 but played it with some friends, don't like it.

this doesn't mean I consider Skyrim the best game ever, but for sure it's game of the year, in my opinion of course

Maybe if you've never played a sandbox game before it seems like the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Albion Prelude did Sandbox better.
Witcher 2 did RPG better
Arkham, Zelda, and Deus Ex did Action/Adventure better
Portal 2 did Puzzle better.

If your only issue with DX:HR is that you don't like the color yellow, that's a very VERY poor argument.

Dues,, Was alright. Portal was fun... And im a HUGE Batman fan.. Arkham city was soooo much fun, but its tooooooooo short. I mean i tried taking my time with Batman and still beat the game in 2 days.. lol.

Now, i bet if they made skyrim as small as Arkham city there would be NO problems.

Skyrim seems to try and JAM so much into the game its bound to have a ton of problems.. Id rather a jam packed game with problems than a short one. Just sayin.

Deus Ex has a yellow shade for atmospheric purposes. The actual gameworld isn't; the post-processing effect is. If you need another example of a game critically acclaimed that used an extreme contrast or color for artistic effect, check out Limbo. You may not like the effect but its purpose is clear and was appreciated by the general industry.

You didn't like Portal 2, that's fine. Many players did and it's quite insulting to minimize it to a "game for children" just because you could not appreciate it :)

See, that's how you bring over opinions in a civil manner. Consider yourself educated.
