Is it just me, or is the concept of a Soul Gem gruesome?

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 6:41 pm

In that case it can be a good thing. Imagine being enchanted in Mjoll's briastplate.

Considering I made a set of daedric for Mjoll and enchanted it with black soul gems, that's a somewhat awkward thing to realize.

I realized how bad it would be to be trapped in a soul gem. Wait until you come across the Azura's star quest!

That's okay. It's very pretty, but implies that they really are trapped inside.

Kind of like in Daggerfall, where they kept Lysandus' soul inside a gem too

A bandit who's existence results only in negativity can redeem himself by helping me make my daedric axe become imbued with flame.

A notable redemption if said axe is used to kill Alduin.

As a bonus, he gets to feel the impact as well as see it.

I was thinking about the Soul Gems in TES. You kill something, and trap its soul into a Gem, witch can be used at your disposal for enchanting items.

Am I the only one who finds this completely gruesome? Fist of all, I can't legally kill someone, but If I want to trap their immortal being in a rock and use it for my personal use its perfectly okay?

Also, every single enchanted item in the world of TES costs lives to create. Want an axe that makes you job easier through enchantment? Well guess what. I killed your pet fish to make it for you, happy birthday! Some even use human souls... This is just, overwhelmingly evil. I see why Nords don't trust Magic now.

I had the same concerns when I first started playing Oblivion. It seemed almost Satanic to me at first, lol. But I soon discovered that setting creatures and whatnot on fire with my Bow of Falmes was pretty dang cool! So I got over it pretty quickly.

Don't feel to bad, The souls get their own back on occasion. http://mobile.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Feyfolken is a good example.

What I want to know is this...

When I enchant some aparrel, say some boots... What happens to the soul? Are they my boots now? Are they IN my boots?

Is it like soul gems where they are transported to a 'realm of the essense of boots?' Do they smell the stank of my travels?

Now like I said before I never use soul gems, I just sell them, but i do use enchanted swords.

Now I never even understood what soul gems really did and never even was sure that they were used for enchanting stuff ever since Morrowind since I am NOT a magic user or enchanter and role play it. My barbarian character simply was not interested since it was arcane, otherworldy, weird. So, yes, people it`s actualy possible to pay these games like Conan the Barbarian and not have a clue what a soul gem does...

The first time I actually realised what a soul gem did was when I grabbed a sword, just looked at its damage but not its spell ability and killed a bandit with it.

When the bandit`s soul came out and was swirling about me, I was like `What the heck? I don`t see a Dragon!` Then I decided to check my sword and discovered that if you killed a guy with the sword and had any empty soul gems in your bag then you svcked up his soul!

That sword was sold off pretty fast.

Always pleases me when I role play so well I didn`t even know what a soul gem really did.

I now await the chorus of childish sarcasm. Neither is their any point with reasoning with my barbarian about it because if he was real he`d probably have walked away from such civilised discussion as idiotic and if you persisted would probably have run you through by now.

Maybe with a soul sword just to teach you a lesson!

I spent this afternoon sending up purple flares from the white river, to fill some petty soul gems with Mudcrab and Slaughterfish souls. Those are the reason that it's not immoral to soultrap creatures - THEY AREN'T THAT "INNOCENT"!

My Paladin uses enchanted weapons with a clear conscience because the souls of the evil doers he has slain are doing their part now as tools of the greater good.

Debating what critters are sentient is silly. Not even science can agree on that list.

I actually just made a Paladin character and am now wondering if I can go with enchanting or not...damn you op!

Not only should you not use enchanting yourself, you shouldn't even use enchanted weapons or armor! That's like a vegan wearing leather shoes.

I agree with the OP. The concept of a soul gem is messed up. But on the other hand, I don't think its a half bad fate to be turned into a sword of unmatched legendary power do you? But on the other other hand I think it would totally svck to be turned into something really lame and gay or used to power other objects period.

That like using demonic/daedric and black magic/necromancy to do the good, not sure a paladin would use that.

I hate to break the news to you, but "No animals, mythical creatures nor humanoids were injured during the making of this game."

LOL... But yeah IMO with more threads like this one. Next they will remove the soul gems from the game like they did spellmaking. So no one can be offended.....

"M'aiq was soul trapped once. Not very pleasant. You should think about that once in a while."

Yep, it's a horrible concept. More evil than necromancy, I'd say.

I applaud your infallible logic.

It is for this reason that I want to create a Dunmer mage-sassin who keeps the souls of all of his contract victims in a barrel in his basemant. Grand souls are valuable for enchanting and all, but the concept is just awesomely evil to me.

For that kind of character, I mean. I'm usually not that evil. Usually,

When you capture NPC souls you could enchant items with their names to remind you whose soul is powering them -- Nazeem Muffle Boots, Mjoll briastplate, Sven Bow, Lydia Battleaxe ...
