Live Oil Spill Cam

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:08 am

I don't think it was BP's idea to place the camera there, I heard some politician did something to make sure there was one down there. Not sure if he talked BP into doing it or what. But anyway....
Yeah it's a shame, but nothing I can really do.
The ironic part about this is that the oil rig sunk on earth day.

The funny thing is, scientists were debating on how the oil in the water would affect a potential hurricane. Talk about sugar coating with BS.

What would happen if there is a hurricane though? Would it carry the oil onshore?

So much oil gone. And eventually, some decent seafood while there at it.

I like to think its clouds of chocolate syrup instead of oil...

Salty chocolate syrup? I'd pass.

From what I have heard on NPR, there was a debate on whether it would increase activity or decrease it. I believe they were discussing temperature issues with the oil.

I'm surprised they haven't discussed a lightning storm hitting the area and setting the ocean on fire :shifty:

How freaked out would you be if you saw a Big Daddy stomp past?

That would be amazing. :D

Any chance of this hitting the coast of South Carolina sometime? I'm going to be going to South Carolina for vacation in a month and when I go to the beach, I don't want to see any oil.

I've heard talk that the oil might work its way into the gulf stream and then onto east coast shorelines, but I think you'll be fine.

I don't think so. It's very unlikely that it would go east and work it's way all the way around Florida and then spread northern to SC. I'd think they'd have it stop and at least have some of it cleaned up before it could get there

Still shocked that it hasn't made it to Texas yet. Meh, we deal with red tide every year but this is bad.

How long is it taking to load for you guys? I haven't been able to watch any of it yet, it just says 'waiting for video'. Maybe a Big Daddy cut the wire.

It's working fine for me, but someone is playing with the camera.

Actually the cost guard did set it on fire in order to prevent it from spreading, but oil on sea doesn't burn as one might imagine it would.

Had to actually check wikipedia for what "red tide" means, we get that exact same thing here every year, ruining perfectly good shores. In worst years almost the whole gulf between Finland and Sweden is like porridge :shakehead:

So instead of putting something there to stop it, they put a camera there to film it...

There are thousands of media execs trying to work out how they can make a reality TV program out of it.

Oh, but they want you think that they are in fact doing something and that's why the camera is there..

I think I saw a few sea kittens swim into it... Poor sea kittens. :(

Edit: Did it just get worse? It seems to be blowing to the right now anyway, I can't even see the robotic arm half of the time.

edit 2: Okay, now the entire screen is filled with oil smoke. Is the water flowing in another direction or something so the oil is blowing over the camera now instead?

edit 3: And now they're moving the camera out of the smoke, trying to get it back into position. :P

And now it's back in the spill and we still can't see anything. :P

The reason it's still going is because of all the natural gas that pent up underground along with the oil. When a leak is struck, it spill outs uncontrollably until the pressure goes down. That's how they pumped oil a long time ago. They'd have to wait for the geyser to stop so they could put the pumps in place. That could take days if the deposit was big enough.

Seeing as how it's underwater (and therefore at a higher pressure) it's going to take a while.
