Mods Potentially Coming to Consoles in the Future? [merged s

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 4:37 pm

I don't think it will happen this gen, but the reality of the situation is that consoles will have to become open platforms if they want to stay relevant and the big 3 know this, and developers are pushing the issue hard. So it's not really a matter of "if" it will happen but "when".

QFT baby!

Mods and/or Creation Kit won't happen in consoles.

You can be sure... Microsoft alone, will not allow this.
Unless they can find a way to make money from it that will make up for all the headache they will probably get with it, if it were to happen

Why can't bethesda update the game with texture mods? Although I find some mods to look interesting, texture mods is the only type of mod that I really want...

The game is already pushing the consoles to their limits, it can't handle higher resolution texture mods without slowing down.

They probably don't want to get all caught up in buying the mod from the person who made it. That and the game already lags on console, anything higher resolution and your console may explode.

Mods often are things the creators of them don't want companies getting royalties from when those companies didn't make them. Also, notice how most mods enhance an aspect of the graphics? Many like to use mods that add more advlt content, and this stuff is also found in large amounts.(I'm not saying modders are only making this kind of stuff, this is just what I see the most) I don't think even the next gen consoles will be able to handle any messing around with the code of any sort without making the game harder to run.

Lium was making a joke, for those that don't know. Just wanted to point that out.

You guys are really blowing this out of proportion. All Todd said was "If this was a perfect world, we could". Which basically means no or not anytime soon.

The big obstacle is Microsoft and Sony, they will not allow it without monetary compensation. As Povuholo said, it cost about 40k just to patch the game, adding an endless stream of extra content is not in the realm of possibility unfortunately.

It really comes to down who will host it, I don't see MS doing it unless they added in with the cost of gold, because they don't like doing things for free. If the platforms become open (which they will at some point), BS will just have to host the content themselves or maybe integrate steam like PS3 did with portal 2 and deliver the mods to consoles that way. They would also probably have to have a warning saying them and MS/Sony are not reliable for what mods you add to your console... this would make it unnecessary for MS/Sony to have to test all the mods like they do with patches which adds to the cost.

Don't count on it, Microsoft/Sony won't allow it. Just patching a game on both consoles costs $40,000 so I doubt they'd let free mod downloads through. And they're generally very protective about their platforms.

Sure Todd talks about it optimistically, of course he wants to see it happen. But I don't think it will. Not with Skyrim, not this console generation. Maybe in the future.

Won't this be just like what you do when you download maps on far cry or halo? That's free content that adds to the game too. What if the mods are created by xbox users using a less advanced creation kit and they charge you pay 10 to 15 bucks to download it?

The thing with map editors like Far Cry's and Halo's is that they aren't actually adding anything new to the game, it's using existing models and whatnot, nothing for Microsoft to traffic.

Well, I'm on xbox and it made me giggle. I took it as a skit on PC elitism.

Anyway, you wait til you see the outcry if and when it eventually happens. It's been bad enough with the beta and timed exclusive as it is...

Pretty sure that'd be against MS's ToS?

However, if you left your console offline...

Hmmm. I'd keep it on the D-L tbh. However, if MS or someone from Beth came out said it was fine then I'd be all over it like a rash! I'm loathe to risk a banning though cause I do quite a bit of MP gaming and I don't want to have to buy a new console. :(

Just a reminder, talking about breaking Microsoft's/Sony's Terms of Service is against the rules. Steer clear of that topic if you want to keep this discussion going.

Well I could see something like a mod "pack" maybe being included with a GOTY edition or something along those lines. Probably including the most popular mods from the steam workshop. I have serious doubts that it would be for free though.

This could be done. Just include an option to upload mods to Xbox Live through the steam workshop.

I suspect it has to do with what the mods change and whether or not the console's operating system allows it to be altered. As an example, if the files being edited live on the CD for the console version instead of on the "harddrive." Then that would make them much harder to alter.

There is potential to make money on the idea. Xbox live could charge a subscription to be able to download them.

Can someone tell me why mods have not been released onto console yet? Why in god's name does idiot sony and microsoft have to get in the way?! The damn fans want damn mods on their damn console dammit!!!! :fakenopic:

The biggest obstacle is that MS and Sony have closed platforms meaning they test EVERYTHING that gets put on them... it would be impossible for them to test every mod that would be added because it would cost $$$. I do know of one game that did mods on the PS3, but I not sure if Sony stopped allowing it or something because no other game has done it since.
