Mods Potentially Coming to Consoles in the Future? [merged s

This could be done. Just include an option to upload mods to Xbox Live through the steam workshop.

Yeah, could probably be quite easy.

Would go against the (unwritten) terms in the MS user TOS re: "You agree that MS can nickle and dime you at every opportunity".

The day MS and Sony allow mods on the consoles is the day I go run on the stage at E3 in the nvde.

No, mods wont come to consoles, it's just something Todd would like to happen.

Adding mods does not technically go against the TOS. What the TOS, means is that "you", a user of the console can not modify that console's hardware to play mods. This is not the same for a developer, there are not actually modifying the hardware at all.

MS just doesn't allow it because they don't want un-tested stuff running on there system ...

It's just some lip-service from Todd. Having in mind all the "cons" console modding has, it'll likely never happen.

Thats a bunch of bull!! Mods NEED to come to consoles!! It's a damn good thing that it wasn't the other way around and then pc players would be complaining about it.

There has to be something they can do! I'm not wasting my money on a pc for damn mods. It has to come to console one way or the other otherwise I'll be very disappointed!

I understand the problem with allowing modding on xbox but beth could easily take the top ten mods from a reputable site like nexus, test them thoroughly, and then add them to consoles via dlc or patches

todd talks out his toot though, he did it at last years e3 with things about skyrim and now he did it again

Well that is why I was saying it is more likely that the most popular mods would be bundled in with the GOTY edition or something along those lines. Consoles just differ from PC's in very significant ways. Which is why the PC version of games have always had much larger modding communities. A bundle of the most popular mods, on a DVD from Bethesda, is your best chance of actually getting access to them through an XBox or PS3.

Forgot to mention... The unfriendliness of consoles to mods could change as consoles are continuing to, essentially, evolve into "gamebooks." You've got XBox's now with 250 gigabyte harddrives and increasingly "app for that" design mentalities. Skyrim only takes up about six gigs, more with high res of course, so it could become more common for games on consoles to also go "digital." The DVD would either disappear completely or become solely a medium for installation.

Many players use multiple platforms. I for one, play both PC and Xbox.
And?
instead of, ahem, arbitrarily dividing ourselves along imaginary lines, perhaps we ought to simply play and let play.
For in the end, http://youtu.be/e9mf3Bypyk8
Agreed if they do mods for consoles great. I doubt they will but if they do that's great for those that choose to play on console for whatever reason.

Lol at those who get on the internet and act superior because they play TES on a computer or any single platform for that matter, when they knowingly do not act like that when they are off of these forums going about their life.

There is nothing wrong with equality among platforms on mods and content and so on. Some mods consoles cannot do but that does not mean some mods would not work well on console, but hopefully they do it I just don't see Sony and Microsoft letting it happen.

Yeah, those interviewers often have little to no clue on what they are blabbering about. They basically try to make up in enthusiasm about whatever shows up on the teleprompter, "Next a look at the revolutionarily awesomeness that is Hello Kitty Opium Den," for what they lack in ability and or willingness to understand the material. :stare:

Maybe they should start allowing gamers like me who have been playing games since a very young age, to give the scoops eh? I know I would be good at that sort of thing because I research games all the time.

lol, that's evil

If he was serious, then I don't blame you.

I was serious and if you send me spoilers it won't make a difference since I'd be reading them in a thread anyway (although I could of course delete your messages, smart guy.)

Mods often are things the creators of them don't want companies getting royalties from when those companies didn't make them. Also, notice how most mods enhance an aspect of the graphics? Many like to use mods that add more advlt content, and this stuff is also found in large amounts.(I'm not saying modders are only making this kind of stuff, this is just what I see the most) I don't think even the next gen consoles will be able to handle any messing around with the code of any sort without making the game harder to run.

Lium was making a joke, for those that don't know. Just wanted to point that out.

Can someone tell me why mods have not been released onto console yet?

There ya go.

He said he hoped he could do it. I really wish he didn't say that, becaue if its not true, people will be really disappointed.
He's been saying that for years, but from a business perspective it's difficult. There are lots of potential complications in terms of business and security when it comes to mods on consoles. For better or worse, consoles don't feel they're ready to take that risk yet.

Unlikely though, mods are intellectual property of another party. In order to get them to transfer to a console you would need to get a waiver from their creator(s) or you would be breaching quite a few laws. In doing so Beth would be taking one hell of a risk and be collecting money from another person's work, so it would likely involve royalties to the mod creators which in turn would lead to a lot more isuees.

Sure Todd talks about it optimistically, of course he wants to see it happen. But I don't think it will. Not with Skyrim, not this console generation. Maybe in the future.

Lets hope something gets worked out for the next gen consoles.

I'm fairly certain (but I could be wrong) that in BS TOS it says that anything you create is still owned by them.

EDIT:

Yep, right from the creation kits terms of service: http://store.steampowered.com/eula/eula_202480

If You distribute or otherwise make available New Materials, You automatically grant to Bethesda Softworks the irrevocable, perpetual, royalty free, sublicensable right and license under all applicable copyrights and intellectual property rights laws to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, perform, display, distribute and otherwise exploit and/or dispose of the New Materials (or any part of the New Materials) in any way Bethesda Softworks, or its respective designee(s), sees fit.

Wrong. AFAIK, all mods are property of Bethesda, regardless of who did them.

That doesn't mean that (most) modders would be happy to see those two (M$/$ony) filthy rich companies to obtain an even greater benefit, at the cost of their own work (which is a lot of it...go create a decent quality mod if you don't believe it). So unless they'd offer the mods for free, mods for consoles would surely tear apart the modding community, with a lot of it's work going underground. That's the reason I'm completely against it.

And anyways, having in mind the amount of resources that'd take, plus how they're usurer enough to reclaim $40.000 to publish A PATCH....I think I prefer not to imagine what would take to filter, convert, anolyze and publish user-made mods.
