Next Dragon Age taking cues from Skyrim

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 10:06 am

Well, lionhead brought out Fable amidst trumpeting about how it was going to blow TES out of the water... And then it didn't LOL.

Fable isn't exactly direct competition. It's TES lite.
AFAIK, no one's given it a real try.

When all else fails ride coat tails

This method can't be any worse than Dragon Age 2.

I hope.

Who am I kidding? Of course it's going to be worse.

Aye true it's not any more, not after the gales of laughter from those who wanted to see this Morrowind-slayer. Other than that no, no-ones really tried. Which is a crying shame. :(

Well, so much for hoping there will ever be another decent Dragon Age game again, lol.

Hugely disappointed with DA2, and i feel releasing that abomination was a good thing as i can only assume it showed BioWare what's expected and what people want. Hell, if it disappoints me, then things were truly awful as i can enjoy such [censored]e as Divinity 2 and Sacred 2.

I think the general reluctance to take on Bethesda is the simple fact that they are by far and away the best dev when it comes to this style of game - nobody wants to embarrass themselves, with the possible exception of Peter molyneux. I still have to tip my cap to him for having the bottle to try though. Nothing like a bit of competition to keep people on their game, so to speak...

I think if there was a prize for the biggest bellend in the gaming industry PM would win it hands down. He spouts this sort of stuff before every Fable release and he will do it again with each and every Fable game in the future.

Dragon Age 2 was god-awful.

But Bioware once stood for something: like Baldur's Gate, the greatest RPG ever. In fact, they already had a much more open world back then.

I'm willing to give them chance. But I certainly won't be buying DA 3 on the advice of the professional critics alone, like I did with DA 2. Customer ratings like on metacritic are more reliable: it's the intelligence of the swarm.

I lol'd. Ah well, he's admitted himself that he shouldn't have anything to do with PR because he goes overboard, and I can't deny that whilst fable falls down on many many counts, it has the potential to be significantly better than it is. They just need to throw a WHOLE load more time and manpower at it, iron out the myriad bugs, make it proper free-roam... Hell, the list goes on...

At least he knows how he comes across! And TBH there are bigger bells within the industry, they just shy away from the spotlight. But yes he does have a mouth that writes cheques he can't hope to cash hehehehe

DA is fun, especially since it goes back to the "party" system, something integral to the core of RPG (PnP or older CRPG). The problem I've had with it (keeping in mind I still think that they're great games) is the linear "dungeons". DA II was a disappointment dungeon-wise. The same crap over and over again got very tiring and limited playability. DA:O's converging storylines were FAR more compelling than DAII's, for sure. In fact, DAII was, for me, more action with RPG elements than RPG at all. And the action part was really RPG-like action, not shooter action, so it kind of failed to excel in all genres. BUT, it was GOOD and still a fun play. If they can make it TRUE open world instead of "open world feel" AND fix the half-@$$ed storyline that made DAII a significant step down from its predecessor, as well as KEEP the party system, DAIII will absolutely rock. If they proceed in the direction that DAII took from DA:O, well, IMO, it could wind up an epic failure.

They went arcade with Dragon Age II hoping to achieve Call of Duty sales and fell flat on their faces. Instead of learning their lesson and go back to the successful recipe of Dragon Age: Origins and other Bioware games they now want to go sandbox hoping to achieve Skyrim sales. Good luck with that!

Heh, I didn't even see that bit. Playable dragons? The six scenes will be glorious!

Dragon Age is truly dead after what they did with 2.I hated it so much that i won't touch anything from this franchise ever again,DA2 was a pain to finish and i just never touched it after the first playthrough, didn't even bother with the DLC.

Hmm. I wonder how much of this is actually Bioware's idea and how much is EA ordering them to put it in the next game.

But Bioware once stood for something: like Baldur's Gate, the greatest RPG ever. In fact, they already had a much more open world back then.
And then they were bought by a huge corporation who doesn't care about good games, and only wanted Bioware for the name recognition.

Dragon Age 2 killed the Dragon Age series for me. What I hated about it was that the gameplay was crap and the graphics on faces and environments were worse than DA:O, thanks to DA2's 'distinctive' AKA crappy art style. Not to mention all sense of epicness and scale was gone as Hawke ran around ONE city and the surrounding countryside which was nothing special.

hmmm... interesting don't know if they have technology to do it but if they manage to create dragon age 3 as huge as Skyrim I will definately wait for it. Another open ended game would be awesome but I will wait and see if they can make it.

Doubt it'll be good, feel like Bioware should stick to their strong points - RPGs with emphasis on dialogue and characters. If they can manage open world while retaining quality of characters and dialogue, I'd be surprised. I'm guessing it'll be overly copy/paste and spread thin. Skyrim has these as weak points as well, but the TES/Fallout series' open game worlds are simply superior to anything else. I can't see Bioware competing at world building on a large scale. It would be fantastic if they could though, I'm just very, very skeptical. Especially since DA2 was such a flop, and since Bioware is now owned by EA.

Dragon age 2 destroyed the series beyond repair.I just don't see this DA3 being as good as DA:O,plus EA wants to slap a multiplayer that will be empty in about two weeks so they can put that online pass crap on it.

Too late,bioware.

remember people... they werent saying anything about DA3 until this announcement saying they want to be like skyrim just after skyrim sold a bajillion units. this isnt an announcement of anything other than bioware's interest in bethesda's customers.

Am I the only person who enjoyed the lore and story in Origins, but was rather turned off by the soap opera-esque love interests? Seriously, they shoved romantic sidequests down my throat at every turn. I would have had such a much better experience without it.

Most of Skyrim's success can be attributed to marketing. The guy/gal in charge of that has a job for life.
