NonNord Dovakhiin

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 12:55 am

Your opinion is wrong. My Nords and Redguards are the only characters I have that haven't become Dragonborn yet (killing Numinex).

My Orc fits the role nicely, as does my Bosmer. My Bosmer is also a sword and board warrior with Light Armor and no stealth skill.

The Dragonblood is a gift from Akatosh, it isn't based off race. In fact, Akatosh would be likely to make it a different race, as to preserve the Empire against the Stormcloaks. A Nord Dragonborn would have a higher chance of joining the Stormcloaks and fracturing the Empire than a Bosmer Dragonborn.

Honestly, the idea of a Nord Dragonborn is weird. Why would Akatosh give his blessing to the Elder Scrolls universe's equivalent of trailer trash?

nerd-raging if you could only be human (I'm looking at you, BIOWARE!)

Yeah, but there is no dovahkiin or prophecies or even world saving heroism in DA2. Hawke is just supposed to be a somewhat down to earth Ferelden refugee, trying to support his family. The little touches in the story fall apart if you make it too neutral. The family aspects, the Ferelden aspects, etc.. They're trying to tell a specific story, with some freedom for the player. I never understood the rage on that.

That aside, if Dovahkiin was supposed to have a specific Nord story, I think they could have handled it better, much like Hawke's story. But they didn't. They were shooting for something open ended. If it this was supposed to be a Nord centric story, it svcks.

Without spoiler-ing, I think any race fits once you progress the story and see that there are ways to branch from Nord centrisim. For example, the Greybeards aren't the only one seeking a Dovahkiin. The Blades are as well. And the Blades are neutral, racial wise (I mean, Esbern and Delphine are Nord and Breton... and in past games, there have also been Imperial and Redguard Blades members, etc..). Strictly following a Greybeard/Stormcloak path is pretty Nord-centric though, without some clever RP backstory on your part.

On my first playthrough i was a Khajit and im went with the Stormcloaks (dunno why, but thay just seemed more appealing), and i didint really find any problems. On my second playthrough, i got the jagged crown for the stormcloaks, then just abandoned the quest line entirly.

OT: Your not really reminded of your race that often (if you dont go into towns often, like me) unless you go into third person and take all our armor off.

Who said every Dovahkiin was human? Sure, it made absolutely no sense for a Nerevarine to be a non-Dunmer..since it was the reincarnation of a Dunmer..

I think people are jumping a bit to conclusions here. I don't think anyone is saying the Dovakhiin HAS to be a Nord, rather Bethesda seem to nudge you towards choosing the Dovakhiin to be a Nord. Just as if the game was set in Black Marsh, Bethesda would probably nudge you into being an Argonian for the main quest.

But if one took the trailers too seriously, they'd also be pushing you to be a Nord warrior (who's gimped and specced in heavy and light armor. Heh).

I'm playing a Nord now, but a mage.. and it's still fitting. I could easily say having Esbern as my mentor "nudges" me to being a Nord mage. I could say that Dragon Priest masks quests nudge me that way too.

Or I could just take a completely different path, and say that nudges me. There's a representative of almost every character type in the plot, so it doesn't make you feel too out of place. You can be a Bosmer hunter, and not stick out. Because they're all over the place as well. You're only seeing Nord centrism if you want to.

I think it's a bit obtuse to suggest that Esbern is a nudge at all. When a game developer nudges you to make a certain decision, it's not really subjective. The game clearly gives you several obvious nudges to play a Nord, but that's all they are, nudges. Bethesda isn't telling you to a be a Nord, and they're certainly not suggesting the Dovakhiin has to be a Nord, but they clearly suggest that you might want your first Dovakhiin to be a Nord.

It's not obtuse. I'm just saying what works for me, from a roleplaying perspective. I don't think Esbern actually nudges anyone in a general sense. The point of my post is that everything is up to one's own perceptions. There are many differing elements in the game to nudge you and/or at least not make you feel out of place for whatever character you choose. For some reason, some people have honed in a specific Nord image. I'm saying they don't have to. It's up to them.

About the only thing you're restricted from playing is a Thalmor sympathizer.

Well of course it's up to the individual, it always should be. But I think Bethesda would of represented the other races a bit more in trailers, promotional pictures and art yadayada if they didn't have a "canon" (again using this word very loosely) character in mind. I completely agree with you that it's up the individuals own perceptions, but I think you would have to try kinda hard not to see that Bethesda is promoting being a Nord over other races.

My dragonborn is a wood elf battle-mage, but it makes sense cause i play with the imperials... so im using my dragonborn powers to put down the rebellion and help the people of Skyrim with their dragon problem to strengthen the hold of the Empire

I thought Talos was Dragonborn as were some Emperors or Imperials. Nords just call them Dovakin, but I'm sure they exist in other cultures as well.

I really enjoy playing an Argonian dragon born just because he looks kind of dragon-y to begin with. I didn't really feel the need to rationalize it for my Bosmer, though.

Imperial is still a human so no, not really. On my thief/assassin khajit I haven't done the main quest yet, I just beat the Dark Brotherhood, the Thieves Guild, and almost the imperial questline but apparently I'm forced to do the main questline first.
