Not enough racism?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 1:04 pm

I was at the docks in winterhold talking to some fellow argonians when one of them told me about how they were paid verry little only because of their race. I naturaly wanted to help them so I started the quest. I talked to the guy responsible for the poor wages and he seemed to be strangely un-racist to me. He just said, "Sorry, I'm not hireing any more crew members." when I talked to him, and when I talked to him about the argonians he took it just fine despite my being one my self. It just seems like it would increase the games immersion if the dialouge was a bit more varried.

Some more race-specific dialog would be nice.

the lack of racism in skyrim was a very poor decision, imo.

Some more anything-specific dialogue would be nice.. right now the conversation if the same no matter if you are an argonian female assassin, male nord warrior or a flying, talking piece of cheese.

I've just started a new wood elf character, and I have the exact same situation. One stormcloak at Dawnstar was talking to me and said something along the lines of "We need to get all the damn elves out of Skyrim! This is a nord's land!" I was just kinda sitting there like "Uh huh... Yup."

It really is so bad that it shatters immersion.

Walking into Windhelm as a Dark Elf should not be a pleasant experience.

That should have been with at tag due to your character's race... "We need to get all YOU damn elves out of Skyrim!"

I know walking into Balmora as a Nord was not a pleasant experience.

i do hope this had nothing to do with any irrational, real-life political correctness and was, instead, laziness or incompetence, lol.

Or maybe the racism is overstated on this forum.

Theres that guy in Windhelm who likes to go the Grey Quarter and let the "greyskins" know what he thinks about them. Hey buddy, I'm a Dunmer. Then there's the bandits that shout out "Skyrim belongs to the Nords!" So why are you teamed up with an Orc, two Redguards and an Imperial?

I find the races are much better realised in Skyrim. In Oblivion they were all much the same with little except appearance to distinguish them.

At least Skyrim gives each a slightly different culture and attitudes. So the khajiit are roaming gypsies, the orcs are very tribal and mostly keep to themselves in the orc strongholds, the Breton natives are the Foresworn with a strange and primitive culture, the Altmer are conceited with a superiority complex, and so on.

I would rather they do it out of fear of being criticized or people yelling "racism" than them simply being lazy.

At least the former suggests that they wanted to put some effort in to it.

Probably a bit of both.

I agree, though, as I'm playing a Dunmer, I should be spat on and abused. Instead, even the most outright racist characters in Windhelm now call me 'friend' - even the one I beat up.

Or maybe the racism is overstated on this forum

That too. The Stormcloak's level of racism is actually tiny - no larger than the Empire's was in previous games.

I've noticed a few notible differences. The silverblood guy who hangs out in the Markarth palace. If your an Altmer he'll make a comment about "your kind" dictating things to the Empire.

I agree, though, as I'm playing a Dunmer (an Ashlander emigrant who joins up with a resistance movement) I should be spat on and abused. Instead, even the most outright racist characters in Windhelm now call me 'friend' - even the one I beat up.

That encounter made me turn off the game.

Him going "it's good to see you again friend" after I just beat the crap out of him was as story killing as Ben Afflack in Daredevil.

We have a winner. Considering some people seem to think genocide is on every corner.

All NPCs you brawl with do it. But this one was...poignant. Especially as he gave me a bottle of Nord mead.

This is very true. People should spit on you if playing an Altmer. Show disgust if you're an Orc.

Seems strange that the Stormcloaks accept any race with their Nord supremacy agenda. The Empire is more cosmopolitan so I can see them accepting anybody.

Yeah, this is a problem for me too. Racial dialogues are really needed in this game!
I went to Windhelm and thought they'd recognize me as a dunmer, give a little warm welcome or something.. but no, I'm just some strange outlander.. :(

It's also dumb that all NPCs do this. It was dumb that I had to beat the crap out of Arcadia for the Companions.

And? So they call us Grey Skins... but do nothing about it.

When I walked into the Windhelm Inn as a Dark Elf and the Innkeeper was like "oh great, just what we need, another Dark Elf," I was expecting her to ask me for 50-100 gold for a room.

Nope, same low, low price of 10 gold like everywhere else.

But she doesn't want me to be there.

Zero logical sense.
