Olympics

anyone going to watch curling? I first saw that sports last night and realized that there is a sport out there which rewards professional brooming

It could almost be bearable to watch if the rock thrower didn't scream and shout crap while the other 2 guys start brooming the ice.

Olympics. One of the few bad things to come out of ancient Greece

Bringing the world together for a few weeks in athletic competition? NONSENSE!

I enjoy the opening ceremonies, but China knocked it out of the park in 2008. It will be hard to impress me like that.

I'll watch the Olympics when I have free time, but be assured that I'll be watching every single match where Team Canada is playing hockey.. :D

Looks like a Georgian luger crashed today and has serious (some sources say life threatening) injuries. He was going 140kmh and flew out of the track and into a metal pole. http://www.cbc.ca/olympics/luge/story/2010/02/12/spo-luge-georgian-alert.html

I love the Snowboarding, Figure Skating, and the Skeleton. Curling is okay, but not as exciting as the other ones.

EDIT: in the US, what channels will show this stuff? Is it NBC? I also have Direct TV and we get the sports channel package, there's dedicated olympics stuff there, right?

The only event I care to watch is the female figure skating.

Here's hoping we'll get a "Ekaterina Rubleva" moment :foodndrink:

The luger has since died of his head injuries. :(

The track is closed and they are in discussions on what to do next.

Doesn't surprise me at all that he died. I saw the crash when they showed it on the news and it was brutal. It begs the question why are there exposed i-beams beside the track where they come out of a turn. I would think there would be some kind of netting. The angle was weird though, they could have been farther away then they seemed.

Yeah I saw it to, brutal indeed. I didn't link to it because one has already been yanked by the IOC from Youtube. (Though there are more.)

Sad event, but do not post any videos, I have already removed one. We don't need to see it on these forums.

I'm going to vote there is a future lawsuit in the works.

I'm not a track designer and I can see the flaw in the design.

The BBC article http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/olympic_games/vancouver_2010/luge/8513595.stm mentions that this track was known to be dangerous, and many people have been injured on it.

Once, a few winters ago I was sitting in the hot tub at the local civic center in Squamish and beside me in the tub was the construction boss/designer for that luge track in Whistler. He told me then that he had been requested to make this track as fast as he could make it and I guess now we see the results of that. I don't think the Canadian or American sliders will have any problems with the track as they have been practicing and training on it for a long time now, but anyone with out a few runs on that track is definetly going to have a few surprises in store for them. Most likely they will just build that corner higher so you can't go over it with hockey board or plexiglass or netting.

I don't really like sports, but I like the Olympics. I just enjoy the excitement.

I'm the opposite. I love sports, hate the Olypics. Especially winter.

But thankfully, there is hockey to be considered.

I am excited for the hockey. Not really anything else. And curling is boring.

I love the Olympics. The skiing and snowboarding events are my favorite, but I enjoy watching everything except maybe figure skating.

Watching the Olympics now. So far the opening ceremony is very unimpressive, compared to what China did at least. One thing that irked me is when the sheet of "ice" broke apart, and all of the dancers were running all over the "water." Hopefully before it finishes there will be more than dancing and fuzzy projections.

Agreed. So far they've been rather boring, I think. The most exciting part so far has been the teams making their entrance.

The fact that I can't hear what that "flying" guy is singing without cranking my volume up all the way doesn't help

That "flying guy" is a circus traqeze artist. The person singing is Joni Mitchell and that is one of her most famous songs.

I normally don't dig this stuff, but I liked a lot of the visuals - the whales and the trees and leaves falling looked pretty cool.
