"On tonight, the proudest night of my life..."

He's going to have some 'splanin to do if he has a wife or child

That "flying guy" is a circus traqeze artist. The person singing is Joni Mitchell and that is one of her most famous songs.

I normally don't dig this stuff, but I liked a lot of the visuals - the whales and the trees and leaves falling looked pretty cool.

It wasn't very impressive imo, though it didn't help that I could barely hear the song despite the fact that I'm 3 feet away from my tv.

Agreed. The whales went off especially well in my book.

I could do with less singing. (Or perhaps better choices in songs.)

I am absolutely embarrassed to be Canadian right now. The opening ceremonies are terrible! They overdid the aboriginal theme, and for the wrong reasons. They did it because they want to be politically correct. The whole ceremony so far is anti-climatic and irrelevant. The best part so far was the poet. The fiddling was ridiculous...

It is, but I sure didn't care for kd lang's interpretation of it.

I thought the slam poet was pretty cool though.

They really didn't hide that very well did they. I mean, it's nice that they're recognizing them, but they really over did it.

I did like Hallelujah though, but so far everything else has been either average or just bad.

Watching the Olympics now. So far the opening ceremony is very unimpressive, compared to what China did at least. One thing that irked me is when the sheet of "ice" broke apart, and all of the dancers were running all over the "water." Hopefully before it finishes there will be more than dancing and fuzzy projections.

Consider the budgets: $300,000,000 for China and $30,000,000 for Canada. Huge difference.

Excuse me for being blunt, but duh. Of course I didn't expect them to be as good as China, but this just isn't very good at all.

Its horrible. I reaaaaally hope someone got fired for this. I just don't understand what they were thinking! It really pisses me off because this was a big chance for Canada to really show our selves of, like in the way the poet did who did a great job.

Yeah, you didn't see? There were supposed to be 4 pillars to be lit, but a door malfunctioned (apparently) and only 3 came up, leaving one of the torch bearers with nothing to do.

Nawh, I stopped watching after I saw what the segment was after the poet. Couldn't take it. Would one of you mind telling me who lights the torch? I really hope its Betty Fox.

This is not good...at all. I'm ashamed to be Canadian.

No, not really. But the door not opening pushed me over the edge.

Look at it this way, at least you Canadians didn't fake and lip-synch your way like the Chinese last year.

At least the Outdoor Cauldron had all of its parts in place

EDIT: changed the "smile" smiley to a "shrug" (to best convey my feelings on the matter ;) )

And a concerted "meh" was felt by all

EDIT2: I will say, though, that I appreciated the Sarah McLachlan part. However, in the beginning, when the Great Bear rose from the stage, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keI59KRVco8

Not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. But that had to be THE worst rendition of the Canadian anthem I have EVER heard. It reminded me of an American trying to sing it at an NHL game. Where they try to sing it like the Star Spangled Banner, but at least at an NHL game they have an excuse cause that's how they do theirs. The anthem is not meant to be sung like some American Idol wannabe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meLpuF9UMvk&feature=related

The whales swimming were cool. The native entrance was cool, but got dragged on and brought up too much through the whole thing. I'm native, but guess what, there are other Canadians out there.
