Paper and Pen notes actually works in Skyrim. Ironic really.

well, nell, this thread is for the use of pad/pencil and the added gameplay value. many of us don't use maps/markers. as well, since the game regularly has npc's talking over one another and they don't ununciate their words clearly or are in dialects and i do have many distractions often taking place during my gaming sessions, i like the added play that pad/pencil offers.

someone that does use maps/markers and can always understand what the game npc's are playing and doesn't see the value of pad/pencil has no impact on my point of view.

I wish I had thought to do this before racking up nearly a dozen Misc. quests. Honestly, the larger quest lines aren't such a problem, so I didn't realize the issue util I'd gotten waaay too many. Heh. I'll be darned if I can remember who gave me this potion I'm carrying and why I agreed to bring it to such and such a place (which is several hundred leagues in the wrong direction). I spent 15 minutes toggling between my journal and my map trying to remember bits about these little quests.

And, truthfully in the scheme of things, this is small potatoes. The pen and paper approach is a great idea. Kudos.

Actually if anything, this is proof that the game -isn't- dumbed down, because the DETAILS ARE IN THE GAME, just as I've always said they were. If you actually -PAY ATTENTION- to what you are doing, the detail is in the game.

The game forcing you to pay attention is the exact opposite of "dumbing down"

Except no. There are many times when the information for a quest is pretty much entirely in the journal rather than gathered from the NPCs or inferred from in-game items. Even worse, there are often situations where the next thing you need to do to complete a quest is something completely arbitrary that makes no sense, so you wouldn't even know what to do if text didn't pop up on the screen and tell you what to do.

I have an excellent memory, so this didn't concern me, but I can see how some people may get lost. Misc quests are basically sans narrative. I find the narrative for individual quests to be quite satisfactory.

Yes, I primarily have issues with miscellaneous quests, which have so little detail that I rapidly lose track of which ones I wanted to do and which I wanted to ignore. Pen & paper has become a must. Ironic in this day of i-touches and whatnot.

Or you do know what to do, but the quest won't recognize you've done it, because you're required to meet some arbitrary condition first. I've actually had quests glitch because I didn't wait for the update telling me to do the obvious. I had one quest refuse to advance because I didn't get the update for using a particular entrance which had nothing to do with the ultimate goal. That kind of forced leading by-the-nose that punishes creative thinking is what I define as "dumbing down".

I just use what the game gives, I loved morrowind and its journal, sometimes id just sit and read it while trying to remember when this or that happened (that might be a bit wierd) but I have no problem with quest markers since it just saves me from double checking the map to make sure I havent gone off course when the big mountain got in my way. I don't think I've ever used pen and paper outside of a table top game. I still think the new journal needs a mod to make a morrowind/oblivion style one or a way to type your own in game one. (I also don't want to waste trees they give me shade in the summer :) )

I think you just gave me adhd

But I completely agree with your dislike of the new journal - in Morrowind it was like reading a story. My first play through of Skyrim, my journal was so cluttered that I didn't know why or who I was doing certain quests. Some of the misc quests would just say "take the ruby to Fred" without telling me who Fred was, why he wanted a ruby or even where he lived. I kept playing until I found a ruby, and had to follow the compass to find Fred. He gave me 100 gold for it and the quest was complete. IN Morrowind the journal actually recorded the events of the story - 'you met a man named Fred in the wilderness. He wanted a ruby to get his daughter out from under a gwar or whatever.
before deciding to start over I would spend hours fast travelling over the map knocking off all these random incompleted quests just to get them out of my journal. My oblivion and morrowind characters never fasttravelled. WIth my second character, I'm completing each quest I get as I get it to keep the number of active quests down. I won't be able to do this for all but for all the 'go to here, get this and come back' quests my goal is to handle them one at a time.

Thanks.

I wish I`d thought of this before starting the game too as I still have half a dozen sidequests I don`t why or what I`m doing them for. The Journal simply isn`t enough. I find myself primarily doing the quests that I made notes for on paper!

Those people who have idetic memories and have no problems remembering everything I`m happy for, this thread is not for you.

This thread is to give people an alternative to struggling with figuring out what they were doing in a quest line they got 2 weeks ago.

Glad to help those people who find this as useful as I have.

one question:

How to [censored] most money with minimal effort ?
The answer hefound: Hype, Lie and work with the weakest platform so it can provide cover if attacked for delivering a shoddy product.
And finally:
I Need to make Modern warfare with swords.

I'm always surprised that in modern Computer RPGs developers don't include a basic notepad function. Even if there was more detail in quest descriptions, there is still often a need to take additional notes. There is no reason to take paper notes when you have a computer.

There are people on these forums who are over sixty, yet Bethesda insists on trying to appeal to children who have no experience with the series whatsoever...I will never understand what goes on in todd howard's head.

It's not all Senor Todd

either the illuminati have their dabbling fingers in, or it's part of this current game craze :ahhh: (around the time COD games were getting big for example, with the idea that a game could sell more than blockbuster movies and cause a massive internet blaze and inspire young guys to make internet groups/ film/ music/ game gourmet (you name it) testing out real guns or making silly vids... =]

Yes it all happened before but it seems for the last few years things are teetering towards appealing to MORE people... and smaller independent game studio's are getting gobbled up and merged with massive leviathan like companies... (that's not to say many will stay true to their cause =] )

It's alot of marketing and advertising, trying to make people want it, even knowing nothing about it.... hence that awesome trailer advert with the real guy garbed in an iron helmet and hide armour that was aired on TV months before release... you know how much 30 seconds of tv advert time costs for how long they aired that? I was getting dizzy before it hit the shelves!

THOUGH that being said there is an exception to every rule here. (apart from adverts cost a bomb that is fact obviously ) though that's assumptions from a vague look at a few yearly trend... perhaps someone knows (has bothered) to look up the meaty details :geek:

these words are open to debate (prepares for inherent :flamed: when saying something they 'know' little about yet see and suspect alot) :bunny:

RELEVANCE TO TOPIC EDIT:- I also make notes! it started with potion recipe's (I often lost where I put the ones in game and I consider looking online cheating ^^) But I soon had the same problem with misc quests.

I also make notes of dates I visited mines! a notepad with loads of different mine names with a table underneath saying.... last visited... updated every ore replenishment cycle ;P

just goes wrong when i forget what character it was o.O

How do you write notes? Do I have to equip a quill? What can I write on?

LOL. Guess you can by an authentic quill and parchment! But can`t in game.

That`s the beauty of the irony. Quite delicious.

It's a simple but pretty good solution. It gives the player a chance to flesh out their character, too.
