does that mean skyboost and tesval will be obsolete? unless they did the same code optimizations surely you could still run them albiet with less fps gains.

^^ I woud'nt do that, even if it could be done. The new patch will break tesval and skyboost, best to uninstall them before patching.

I'd prefer they fixed everything from crashes and busted questlines down to the typos and floating flora, as otherwise 70% of everyone (the console players) don't get to benefit.

Sure, it may put me out of work, but it's the right thing to do.

Now, now. Those floating trees add so much to the game.

These are not going to work with 1.4 anyway without partially rewriting them first because the code structure will have changed in an incompatible way.
However, to answer your question: The posted changelog suggests that they're not going to be needed anymore because the flaws that led to the poor performance have been fixed.

In fact, it might run even better than it does currently with SkyBoost/TESVAL because these two are just crudely rewriting the code to how a compiler would've normally generated the critical code. A compiler can do a much better job at this because it is the program which translates the code into its executable form and thus has all the knowledge and freedom about how to do it. The already generated code however is very hard to modify and it can take hours of research for a human to learn enough about a single function to be able to rewrite it in an more optimized form, which normally still isn't as good as what a compiler would've accomplished.

Even in case more manual optimizations are needed, the 1.4 code is going to provide a much better base for any further work.

Surely they must mean all residue left behind by fallen enemies will clean up now, not just ash piles, although the wording in the patch notes is ominous.

As is the non-adressing of long term play causing permanent CTDs on PC, but as said above, the "general memory and stability fixes" may cover this, we'll just have to see, and not jinx! :bunny:

This is just like back when Bethesda incorporated Large Address Awareness. SkyBoost caused such a hueg raeg that they simply could not deny that they were too lazy to implement SSE/SSE2 in their game anymore.

If done correctly, the boost should be even bigger than what we got from skyboost (which was already significant, especially Phenom II folks noticed the difference) considering that the skyboost guy did not have access to the source code.

the biggest credit definitely goes to the skyboost guy. Bethesda would have continued to laugh in our faces over our crappy performance if you hadn't shown up. Thumbs up, love you.

I don't know how much ash piles add to the size of the save file, but considering I've got thousands of them laying around, I would think once this is fixed the save file size should be significantly smaller.

Some thought on best course of actions...should we....

Uninstall ALL mods ?
Uninstall only TESVAL/Skyboost
Just put Steam in Offline and wait for everyone else to try the Patch...?? ( I got snake bit by 1.2)
Not worry, leave steam running , Try game ..if Broken, Nuke the entire thing and start over?

Hard part, is that even tho i was playing the game like this character was a throw-away...ummm I have gotten attached...shut up...lol

This is coming soon right? Not already available if I re-enable patching in Steam?

I am happy to see all the progress but I really REALLY wish they would do something about the shadows. They really do ruin the game.

Just the option to turn them off would be enough for me.

Hardly anything I've reported made it into there so far, but it isn't out yet, a lot of stuff gets silently fixed, and (I really hope) this isn't the final update.

This is coming soon right? Not already available if I re-enable patching in Steam?

Correct, it's letting us know what's been fixed so far.

Fixed instance where Tonilia would stop buying stolen items and also would not give Guild Leader Armor

This entry could use more details... the major issue is that if the player sells or loses the set of armor they're given at the beginning they can never become Guildmaster as they need to upgrade their old armor to do so. Is that what was fixed? That would be ideal if it was.

still would love a clearer idea if this patch will fix the large save CTD's.But then I guess its impossible too answer what with all the varibles with peoples saves.

Guess we're just gonna have too wait and see.

Read it again and you'll see that it says that it's currently in testing, which they hope to finalize next week. It will then be submitted to the consoles for verification and presumably posted on Steam for the PC. It was unclear whether they intend to start making "beta" updates available for the PC with 1.4 or with successive updates.

Also, keep in mind that "next week" refers to when they hope to finish testing. Nowhere in this status update does it promise the 1.4 update next week and all indications are that the Creation Kit will be released closer to the end of the month, which could be the week after next. That's just what it says, not what I expect. It sounds like Valve is an element to this equation, so keep that in mind if they don't get everything out of the door next week.

On one hand, I want it all and I want it now.

On the other hand, I think waiting to make sure everything is perfect has merit, no matter how long it takes.

Then I think of Duke Nukem Forever.

Then I think waiting is over-rated.

SSE/SSE2 offer minor performance improvements. The real benefit from TESVAL/SkyBoost was inlining, which an optimizing compiler should perform. :)

I just got a raging boner. I'm not going to know what to do if I can actually walk through the gates of markarth without being attacked by the guards-kinda gotten used to it by now. Made for some interesting quests...

Any word of a patch? Are they relying on the user community to fix their own issues? Did "Beth" take the money and run? I have friends asking about this game. I cant see recommending it over such bad support. The CTD issue alone has been around for over a month now. This is not exceptable.

Do you have your Steam properties set to "Automatically update this game"?

Which version are you running? (visible in lower left corner when you hit ESC)

In my case I haven't experienced any CTD at all after Patch 1.2 and the Steam update for LAA.
