To people who don't read the books

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 5:57 am

yes but here's the thing: I would rather be the story than read the story.
such as I would rather be continuing a narative physically by manipulating my surroundings rather than reading a naritive about another persons adventure. I'm playing the game to live MY adventure not read about someone elses. If I wanted to do that I would pick up a book and read that.
That's fine- I'm not telling you how to play your game.

I've always been a codex hound. TES codex is more fun than the usual.

People are taking this reading in game rather personally.
I love to read the in game books they cover pretty much everything from history to fables. There are short stories and myths. The books add to the excellent world and give insight on why certain things work, and the great deeds of everybody from the divine Tribunal to the great queen Barenziah.

Some good books are.

Poison Song series.
Wolf Queen series.
Racial Phylogeny.
Chimarvamidium.
Ancient Tales of the Dwemer books.

There us just so many interesting ones, I have not got around to reading many in Skyrim yet, the new ones anyways.

With Skyrim, I've started to read the in-game books more, and for the most part they're very enjoyable. I've even started collecting. Now my biggest problem is that my house has run out of bookshelf space.

I like reading the book's in game and I usually make sure my char's have at least one or two on them at all times. Reason why, well I smoke, but I NEVER smoke in the house, so when I really want a cig. I hit the "B" button and read a book or two as I stand in the doorway ( I also let my dog's out to do their business )

I read alot on the weekend's, both in-game and in RL, reason being, my husband and his gameing habit's, I feel like a bloody yo-yo somtimes, no point in getting in a quest, I loose tract of what i'm doing and where I am. Very easy to put a book down and pick it back up.

I will forever see any James Bond as Sean Connery, mostly cause he's handsom and I love his voice. So reading any Bond book he's still who I imagine as Bond. Tell Sacket will ALLWAY's be Sam Elliott, well vis-versa.

To me a good book is like a movie, I don't read the words so much as see the pictures they make. On my tablet, paperback, hardcover, on the net or in-game. My husband bought that tablet after we moved the last time and we...errrrr "I" had 50 boxes of book's, my husband doesn't read book's.

Skyrim is like a book I can write myself, that someone else drew-up the outline for.

I do think each person should play the game the way they want to. IF someone doesn't think the Lore in the book's is worth reading, well that's their game. Some ppl go to the beach and never get in the water.

A lot of the books are really dark. I've read a number of them and the stories in them are quite good but they usually have depressing endings. A few are pretty funny though. Lots of lore in them too. I've been amazed by how many books there are. I know some of them are from previous games but that's cool too because it adds some continuity to the series.

Don't forget

The Black Arrow series
Mixed Unit Tactics
The Real Barenziah series (a must have!)

Pretty much the best ones I've read.

The Sackett brand! :foodndrink: I loved the books long before seeing the movies, though, so I never could see Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck as Sacketts. Not awesome enough, sorry dudes.

Someone said the books are dark- that's true- a lot of bleak stuff. But some funny ones, too. I can remember when I was first playing Oblivion (which was my first TES game) and picked up The Lusty Argonian Maid. --> WTF face followed by LOL

Not really, I don't know much lore (only very basic stuff) and I get by fine. You shouldn't force your idea of "fun" on others. That said, I love reading books.
It's not my idea of fun; it's a basic rule of the games, that's it.

The books are absolutely fantastic, have been in all of the games.

Chances Folly, The Real Barenziah, A Game at Dinner, Beggar/Thief/Warrior/King, The Ransom of Zarek, Death Blow of Abernanit, The Mirror, Hallgerd's Tale, The Black Arrow, Mixed Unit Tactics, Orsinium and the Orcs, The Doors of Oblivion, The Locked Room, The Marksmanship Lesson, Ice and Chitin, Three Thieves.

A few favorites.

Or their hobby happens to be gaming.

I read the in-game books. The stories, history, and information add to the game world, besides the boosts you get for reading certain books. Between Morrowind plus expansions, Oblivion and Skyrim, the hours of gaming I have in are easily in the hundreds. Add in the other games I play, and the total is higher. And I have a job. I really don't see a problem.

It seems a mite pointless to expect people who don't like reading to read about why they should read.

Hi there Hackworthy.

Bingo. I consider myself a somewhat avid reader, yet somehow I don't fancy reading in game books. It just feels too leusurely, given all the pressing matters you have to attend to. I wouldn't doubt there are exclusive benefits to reading them though.

No, which is one of the reasons why I do not read them and perhaps it is also the reason why some read everything in hope of finding a good read.

Hoping to find a "good read" in a simple videogame ? in a mini-book of 10-15 pages ?

Anyhow, why start a game, then run around in a 3D world to read a virtual book? I see no sense in it when it has real books and really good ones, too. Just turn off the game for a while. The forum holds more reading treasures, too, than the game.

Sorry but i see no sense in your words.

This is your opinion and as i said before no one forces you to read (all) the mini-books in this game.. i really don't see the point here.

A book is something different in "my world" - hundred or thousand of pages you know
and as i said earlier these are simple mini-books/diaries placed in the game just to explain the lore and some quest/game world dynamics/events (even of the past tes game for those who haven't played yet)

Plain and simple.

Must have a lot of " Lazy days " im starting to think that most of the people that have 500 plus hours in dont have to work........
Personally,i've putted "only" 290 hours ca in Skyrim (xbox360/pc) from 11/11/11 and is the only game that i've played from then on.
I'm forced to play only at night and i've lost hours of sleep for that, but it was worth it.

As i said yesterday in the fallout NV forums maybe the expectations for Skyrim were too high, in some respects.

yep there are books that trigger quests and detail there story other wise theyd just be kill some more undead woop... so yeah i read them, same with journals, they turn kill these dudes steal there gash into an actule story. like op said you can find treasure or quests or just entertainment so id read them, not everytimebut i do some times when in the mood.
To the person saying its weird to play a 3D game world and read a book, i think its weird you would bother playing a game and storing the books on your shelve in game making a point of that but not reading any of them, surely thats more strange, each to there own, i have no problem reading them as they are short, i just wish there were more and that some were less short, like i picked up a nook of riddles and was like ooh i love riddles of pooh there are only like 3... I plan on Moding in more books for my 101 series of mods.

Some don't, I don't, I put my working yr's in, some do.

A hypothetical Treachery, Vernaccus & Bourlor, Azura & the box, The Mirror, and Kolb & the Dragon are my favorites.

I love the in-game books, though some of the stuff is a bit confusing when for example if a certain book is related to another previous book, which I haven't read.

What I find funny though is how the book meshes appear to be super thick, but when you actually read them, they're like only 5 or so pages. :P

It is not important to everyone and it is rude to claim otherwise to those who see it as unimportant. It is why we have threads where everyone can post their opinion, but it does not allow you to attack others for it.

You need to learn the difference between attacking an argument and attacking a person. I see a lot of you doing the latter and not the former. The latter is rude, the former is known as debate. Just don't engage in debate if you don't care about it.

Who wants an argument? It is you, not me. I state my view. You want to make them into an argument. Do not tell people what they need to learn or do to compensate for your lack of comprehension!
