Is it just me, or is the concept of a Soul Gem gruesome?

I was thinking about the Soul Gems in TES. You kill something, and trap its soul into a Gem, witch can be used at your disposal for enchanting items.

Am I the only one who finds this completely gruesome? Fist of all, I can't legally kill someone, but If I want to trap their immortal being in a rock and use it for my personal use its perfectly okay?

Also, every single enchanted item in the world of TES costs lives to create. Want an axe that makes you job easier through enchantment? Well guess what. I killed your pet fish to make it for you, happy birthday! Some even use human souls... This is just, overwhelmingly evil. I see why Nords don't trust Magic now.

My Nord warrior refuses to use magical gear because of this. I have other characters that don't mind and soem that don't even mind using Black Soul Gems but my pure warrior Nord refuses to even loot soul gems, they're filth. All creatures deserve to have their souls free after a death, especially if they die challenging him in combat. It is an honorable death after all, adversary or no.

Not to me it isn't. Granted, I only trap "evil" NPC's like bandits and what-not into black soul gems, but I see it as making use of a previously useless person.

it would svck to be soul trapped... then like dropped to make inventory space in a river somewhere.... could be years, decades, centuries before your set free

Not only should you not use enchanting yourself, you shouldn't even use enchanted weapons or armor! That's like a vegan wearing leather shoes.

True. Guess I will have to stick to potions and restoration/alteration...

Yea i always thought of the Soul Gem process as pretty ghastly all the way back to Morrowind. Its like spiritual slavery. Makes me wonder if the spirit is aware or if this is more of a pure energy with no self awareness yet keeping the consciousness the personality of the being trapped in a sleeping limbo til the energy in the Soul Gem is released thus sending the personality on its way.

Kind of odd the Dunmer would use Soul Gems considering their reverence for the dead then again it might be frowned upon like necromancy.
