But you get what I mean don't you? Your character actually had upkeep costs if you paid it yourself....
People actually paid those silly costs for repair? When hammers were cheap and plentiful? And Armorer (and repairing) was one of the easiest sources of Endurance?

Me, I always just used hammers. Was actually just about the only thing I spent any gold on - I've never understood this desire for "gold sinks" or the need to spend gold on something/anything. (and Repair Hammers certainly weren't much of a "sink". They cost pennies.)
That said.... repair in Oblivion was terrible. Only reason to do it was for the End boost (and because you had to). Especially for those of us who used Light armor - it was fun fighting Trolls/Ogres/anything strong, and having to repair my shield from 0% to 100% after every single stupid battle.
So, no - having to repair stuff (multiple times per dungeon) is definitely not something I miss. And certainly not any source of "realism" or "Real Men's Roleplaying?" or "too hard for those whiny casuals" or any of the other things people bring up.
