If you watch pretty much ANY GOOD post-apocalyptic film their guns are always on last legs and need constant repair. Personally I like the repair function and which they kept it all be it with some tweaking. I like the idea that sharping your blade at a grindstone will keep the damage up, a blunt blade is a useless blade. That with the fact you can attack full power with no stamina makes the game far to easy and loses realism. It was obvious this game was dumbed down for newbies.

Well if Hollywood does it then it certainly isn’t stupid :P

Please explain to me how someone can mess up making a revolver to the point that it breaks down after 30 rounds? Honestly, if someone 200 freaken (198 actualy) years ago made a revolver that broke down that fast he would get shot, or maybe stabed since the revolver broke down lol. The point is that any group of people with knowledge of metallurgy should be able to make guns that last generations not days.

Well, the grindstones and workbenches could be used, in case someone would want to mod in, a reasonable degradation/maintenance system. If you asked me, I'd say Bethesda was going towards such a mechanism, then left it out.

Either way, it's fine by me, I have to be honest on this.

Yes it was in oblivion.
Yes it adds another layer to the realism.

But. What is the focus of the game? Is the exploration or survival? Nearly every survival feature is gone from Skyrim, compared to morrowind and oblivion. Your health regenerates automatically, your weapons don't need repair, and as in the other games, sleeping etaing and drinking isn't required to stay alive. It all depends on what you play, survival or not. In dead-is-dead, the need to eat, drink and sleep and repair equipment would add another layer of difficulty that is entirely different that just the difficulty setting. A welcome addition for some.

Hey man Hollywood are always correct, they never just disregard history and fabricate total lies. In a serious note it just adds to the feel of a decaying world. But you're right the decay rate is far to frequent. The idea of using a grindstone every few days to keep your blade shape (considering the amount of use it gets) is a realistic one. if the blade goes blunt then the sword is effectively useless. So I think a tweak on repair rather than getting rid of it all together would have been a good call. Or if they decided to do a HC mode it could have been added to that, then everyone would get the best of both worlds.

because repair was annoying,

Hey look my gun broke after one battle and i need to pay an insane amount of money to repair it....after one battle...really?

Oh come on. Stop being an apologist.

Things wear down. They need repair. It`s an immersion aspect and even feels good to know you`re keeping your fave weapon in tip-top condition. The ability to repair things should be in the game. It`s only `annoying` in the same way you need new soul gems for magic stuff or that you might get killed by a bandit.

I hate this stupid `dumbing down` by Todd and Bethesda and the stupid excuses of people who try to say it`s a good thing!

It was prolly made 250 years ago, and eaten alive by rust, so it's pretty realistic.

I kinda loved the system in fallout (nv/3), but in TES it felt wrong to me, for some reason...

I certainly do miss it, and am hoping for a mod to fix that at some point. As others have said the smithing skill is just screaming out for weapon degredation

Personally I didn't think it was too bad in oblivion, but it was troublesome at times, basically meant that every character had to have some skill in blacksmithing. In morrowind it was much more of a problem, as there was no such thing as a perk for a limitless smithing hammer, and with some of the strength buffs and whatnot you could get you could end up breaking your favourite sword in just a few hits. However skyrim isn't much of an improvement; while they set about making it so smithing was no longer mandatory, instead now your DPS depends on your smithing skill as it boosts damage so much, and you have to give up perks you might need in combat skills in order to do so.

I hate this stupid `dumbing down` by Todd and Bethesda and the stupid excuses of people who try to say it`s a good thing!

And I hate these stupid Morrowind elitists who hate any simplification or streamlining.

First, despite what you think, I am of equal intelligence to you. Skyrim may be my first TES, but don't blame me for being born at the wrong time or not wanting to backtrack drivers, install DosBox or whatever to enjoy the purity of those older games. Skyrim has it's flaws, but the answer is not fanatically holding on to everything from Morrowind. In fact, adding all these complexities and maintanence will not solve any of Skyrim's core problems, which include lack of quest divergence and shallow roleplaying mechanics. In fact, I say I am more intelligent than you, because I recognize the flaws in my favourite game and refuse to be shallow minded and hold onto it in blind faith and refuse evolution.

Second, despite your preconceptions, Todd didn't single handedly ruin TES. Design changes happen because of many different people with many different opinions and are the product of hours long design and direction meetings. Whether TES is ruined at all is another debate. Todd is just an easy target to you people.

Third, streamlining is not dumbing down. Getting rid of useless skills and attributes is not dumbing down. It's trimming and slimming. Dumbing down
doesn't really exist. They just recognized the superfluous things.

The problem is that people disagree on what is superfluous.
Personally, I think there is no such thing as superfluous or redundant in a TES game, because more options and more ways to achieve a goal are better than less.
Therefore I miss things like levitation, teleportation, armour degradation, birthsigns, classes, npc disposition, faction interaction etc. etc.
To me, the removal of these features means less game for my buck and it means I get to shelve the game earlier, too early for a TES game.
That can be described as a dumbing down, as there simply isnt much anymore that you have to plan for, there arent any ways to really really mess up anymore so conversely there also isnt any real success. And there arent enough paths, options, playthings anymore to keep me interested to the 1k hour mark.

Its beautiful, its interesting but in the end it is shallow and a large part of that comes from the removal of features that like em or not, provided depth.

I agree. A lot of things should have stayed, but I would prefer actual divergent questlines and such before that. My main problem is people being such elitist dikes and unable to properly criticize, just whine.

No. You just pause the game and spam hammers or something. It was flat out annoying and cumbersome.

Pretend you are repairing it in game when you visit a grind stone or something. Don't penalize everyone because you want to be Larpy McNerd Pants. Isn't that what most of you guys do anyways is just pretend like you are different classes despite there not being much specialization in game, and pretend like NPCs have interesting things to say as you sit around a fire? Everytime anyone posts about adding something beneficial or changing gameplay to be more conducive to immersion, it is met with ironic hostility.

just because something was not done perfect last time doe not mean scrap the concept totally, why everyone seems to think other-wise is beyond me, care to explain?

Enchanting is more or less equal to repair. I don't see the point in duplicating a skill, they're too similar.

Sure there is no reason to add needless time and gold sinks into the game that do not improve gameplay, especially to the majority of the audience. I have no issue with this being an option for people, just like say Tire Wear in Racing games. Under no circumstance is repairing gear "fun". Usually, the only reason it is even included from a gameplay perspective is to take gold out of the economy as a gold sink in order to add value to the game currency. Considering this game is single-player, the concept of an economy and necessity of a gold sink is non-existant, therefor by proxy Repairs are not necessary.

this is an RPG, RPGs always try to be at least some-what close to realistic in whatever world they are portraying, repair is realistic and there is no reason to leave it out of the game (I.E. they could not make it work for some reason). that is the reason to add time/gold sinks that "do not improve gameplay"

Hey i'll be the first to bitsch about lost content but i always had mods that almost removed the need to repair your stuff and sometimes had it removed completely.
For swords, a good portion of the damage on old school swords was blunt impact. People in chainmail had bones crushed from swords...

Honestly if guns ever broke down so fast be it post-apocalyptic world or not people would just end up making brand new one. The technology/tools needed to make a kick ass revolver is not that advanced. I would like the idea of cleaning and maintain your gun and there being a chance of it jamming if you chose not to spend your time on such a boring task but even if they jam there should never be a [censored] need to break down 3 other guns just like it to repair it.

Edit: Wow considering the rating of the game the auto censor is really sensitive

I miss repair in Oblivion primarily because without repair you lost all of the disintigrate armor and weapon spells. They should have repair in Skyrim and make you go to grindstones and workbenches to do it and use up ingots and leather strips in the process. It is silly that weapons and armor do not degrade in Skyrim.

Queue the "logic debate". If the game fit everyone's concept of "realism" and was all "logical" the game would suffer greatly. There is a very good reason to omit it, you may not like it, but it is very good reason. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is is the game fun? People play RPGs, and games in general, to escape reality and not exactly replicate it. It only needs to be as close to "realistic" to allow players to immerse themselves without much effort. Skyrim does that just fine. If that isn't up to your liking, modify it or pretend that you are repairing things and throw some money on the ground at the Blacksmith or give them some Septims.

But it served a gameplay purpose. The disintigrate armor and weapon spells were fun to use and it was fun when they were used on you. One minute I was blasting everything in sight with Apotheosis and soul trap with Azura's Star, the next minute, Apotheosis was unequipped and broken, and I am going like what the heck just happened? Oh yeah, I got hit with a disintigrate weapon spell. Well now I got a real fight on my hands . . . and no staff. Good times!

Perhaps if they had a slider so you could adjust it to make it so the armor and weapons lasted a REALLY long time before needing repairs, it would be less annoying for those who don't want to deal with such things, but still allow for more variety in spells.
