Sharpen, Enchant, and...Repair?

Todd said that they would rather make it so that all weapons do 100% damage, and can be upgraded to do more, rather than the old way was that all weapons started at 100% damage and gradually did less.

My understanding was that all weapons would start at 100% damage, could be upgraded to do more, and then gradually went back down too 100%. It should've been done this way. Or did it Oblivions way (you did 100% damage, eventually less as it degrades, and great smiths are able to make it do more) except a) the ability to make stuff, like in Skyrim, and b ) gear and especially your hammers don't degrade as fast. What the hell did they make hammers out of in Cyrodiil?

It provided a money sink and it provided CHALLENGE. It made certain weapons worth using, which in turn made their having more rewarding. You didn't like repairing weeapons in ___ game? BOO HOO. Go loot/steal another one. Why must the greatness of a nice challenge be taken out of my favorite genre more and more every year just to satisfy you lazy, whining casual players? Games are supposed to be challenging. If you want something super easy, go play kid's games, but please stop comaplining so much the industry lowers the bar to cater to you. You're kind of ruining gaming.

But of course when you have to put the same work in to enhance your weapons you have no qualms about that. Cause uberness is always good, but challenge is so lame...

I'd really like if Bethesda added weapon and armor degradation and repairing back in via free DLC, or as a part of a multi-feature adding paid DLC.

I really hope repair never comes back, they will never make it feel just right. There is a reason that there were dozens of mods dealing with it for Oblivion+Fallout and that is because everyone had their own opinion on how it needed to work.

The only thing I would see as tolerable is if the improvement you give your gear with smithing would wear off with use, but I bet there would be a ton of people who would oppose that with a passion. There is no way Beth can do this right so it is better if they don’t do it at all.

please note that most people who use the word "realism" really mean "immersion". of course we're not out to mimic the real, 21st century world in a fantasy game. what we want is to feel "realistically" CONVINCED we're actually there while playing—in short, immersion. it's immersive when hardship and struggle are presented in a game, and rewarding when you finally overcome it. if all weapons should be unber-only, why bother starting with low-damage iron weapons in every TES game? mind as well start with ebony. that way you don't have to bother with scraping by (how tedious, am i right?) and earning (yawn) awesome gear. if you want every single thing that you feel is a waste of time taken out of the series, where does it end? really, if you want instant action and all the awesome without any of the risk, then play action games. the action game industry will then love you and spend more money to make just the kind of action game you love. but risk and reward is what makes rpgs great, so please don't go asking for the risk to be taken away.

But you get what I mean don't you? Your character actually had upkeep costs if you paid it yourself....

People actually paid those silly costs for repair? When hammers were cheap and plentiful? And Armorer (and repairing) was one of the easiest sources of Endurance?

 Me, I always just used hammers. Was actually just about the only thing I spent any gold on - I've never understood this desire for "gold sinks" or the need to spend gold on something/anything. (and Repair Hammers certainly weren't much of a "sink". They cost pennies.)

That said.... repair in Oblivion was terrible. Only reason to do it was for the End boost (and because you had to). Especially for those of us who used Light armor - it was fun fighting Trolls/Ogres/anything strong, and having to repair my shield from 0% to 100% after every single stupid battle.

So, no - having to repair stuff (multiple times per dungeon) is definitely not something I miss. And certainly not any source of "realism" or "Real Men's Roleplaying?" or "too hard for those whiny casuals" or any of the other things people bring up.

They should have done what FONV did and included a mode that made sleeping/eating/drinking a lot more important, but repair was always stupid. I don’t care how dull my claymore gets it will still kill in one blow. If my claymore ever actually broke, I really don’t think I could ever fix it with a hammer in a middle of a cave lol. Having weapons destroyed like that and having the ability to fix them with a hammer in the middle of nowhere really shouldn’t be helping anyone with their “immersion”.

i miss weapon degredation, it was realistic and you had to actually prepare for something

Yeah. Realistic when a gun is half effective as it would be after firing 60 rounds. Or a sword degrading to nothing after killing a dungeon full of bandits.

I for one don't miss repairing at all. The most damage a well crafted sword would have after cutting through flesh and cheap armor would be minimal, maybe a couple of nicks. Definitely something i rather use my imagination that im 'buffing it up' when i rest is more suitable than an actual annoying skill.

Look up some videos on YouTube of guys hitting real swords against hard objects. I think you may change your tune a bit.
