Hi Resolution Texture Pack Free DLC Thread #2

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 2:54 am

This is the place to talk about the texture pack that just came out from Bethesda.

It is 3.1 GB in size and comes as two BSA's and two ESPs. You get this by viewing available downloadable content for the game, and then choosing the new DLC (like you are buying a new game)

Since it is an ESP, you can remove the Texture Pack by un-checking the ESP's in the Launcher, under Data Files. Some have reported issues with the game not loading after the texture pack is downloaded. For them, it seems to be one of the BSA's got corrupted during download. You can test this by un-checking one or both of the ESP's and seeing if the game launches. If corruption is the case, you will have to re-download the DLC.

If you are running other mods, you may have to work with your Load Order to get what you want. If you have texture packs as loose files, those should load instead of the textures in this new pack. However, if a current mod of your is not working post DLC, then check the Skyrim Mods section for a thread on your mod and the new DLC. Search first as the question may have already been asked.

Oh, we got something else today, the Creation Kit. You will find that in Steam, under View - Tools. You may have to restart Steam to see it in the list.

I tried the texture pack, you do notice it on armor and cloths, but thats about it. Also it does decrease fps a bit. Not sure if its worth it.

they will surely produce a big big big big FPS hit.

Not really. If you have enough VRAM and system RAM I doubt there will be much difference, with the exception of load times.

If you don't have sufficient RAM, you will probably be more likely to experience hitching and stutter, rather than an overall lowering of FPS.

The exception is, transparent textures. More transparent pixels may require more work on the GPU.

Edit: For the record I have all anti-aliasing disabled in Skyrim, and I use the InjectSMAA layer to improve aliasing. It works for transparent textures as well. Beats MSAA w/ transparency AA, IMO.

How high are the textures? I mean, are they better than the Skyrim HD - 2K Textures mod? http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=607

And should I uninstall the mod before the texture pack?

I am currently downloading the DLC. How do I cancel it? (Not only pause the download, but really STOP it)

I ask this because I'm afraid of the following:

If the HD texture pack DLC will use two .esp files to activate it, it means they will have priority over all 3rd party mods (loose files)... :(

Even if the 3rd party texture mods have better resolutions (2048x2048) !!

... And even if you tweak your Skyrim.ini with bLoadLooseFiles=1 under [General] section !!

Wait, does that mean no texture replaces for existing armour/weapons/stuff? By the way, you should just be able to uncheck the esp file in data files.

Hello there.

Just wanted to point out two issues I've encountered so far with this HD Pack, I hope I'm not the only one.

I hope there'll be a fix for it. :)

I can't remember the days when increasing texture detail actually did anything to my FPS. Maybe crashes because of RAM usage, but that's it.

Completely vanilla screens, aside from the ebony armor mesh which just has smaller pauldrons and the arm isn't all busted.

Im not sure, but i think overall the 2k mod is better. The only noticeable improvement with the texture pack for me is the cloths and armor.

Yea it is kinda hard to noice, even on a big screen. You can see it if you look at cloths and armor close-up.

The only reason cloth and armor is better in quality is because Skyrim HD didn't do those textures yet.

In generall the official texture pack got 1024x textures, while the skyrim HD pack got 2048x textures.

Also, found this somewhere:

You can also use Skyrim HD with the official HD pack covering the points this one doesn't.
To do it deactivate both HighResTexturePack01.esp e HighResTexturePack02.esp and modify your skyrim.ini like this:

[Archive]
sResourceArchiveList=Skyrim - Misc.bsa, Skyrim - Shaders.bsa, Skyrim - Textures.bsa, HighResTexturePack01.bsa, HighResTexturePack02.bsa, Skyrim - Interface.bsa, Skyrim - Animations.bsa, Skyrim - Meshes.bsa, Skyrim - Sounds.bsa
sResourceArchiveList2=Skyrim - Voices.bsa, Skyrim - Voicesixtra.bsa

Apperently if you use this the official texture pack will be set as a Base and everything in data will be loaded over it if possible, I can't test it out myself yet since I'm still in the middle of my download.

I hope Skyrim HD does clothes soon then (any idea when?). Because then I won't need this....

Just for future reference, how do I remove this? Do I just remove the bsa and esp files?

Should be able to switch them off in the loader, data files or something and simply untick them, I think you can do the same with the Nexus mod manager.
Tough again, still not done with my download and basing this on other posts on the forum.

I encountered one of those purple textures I used to get before the 2GB patch. The chopping block owned by the female elf food merchant in Riften was the problem.

Thank you for that. I have not used Steam that much so I would not know how to get the kit.

Check out people in robes and armor. I notice they are better looking in jorvaskr. (spelling is probably totally wrong)

Last I remember it was just people in armor. With the pack I notice the animal faces and detail.

(...) If you have texture packs as loose files, those should load instead of the textures in this new pack. (...)

CCNA, I'm sorry to ask you, but are you 100% certain of this? I ask because I always thought that every .esp file have priority over a loose file, ever !

(...) Since it is an ESP, you can remove the Texture Pack by un-checking the ESP's in the Launcher, under Data Files. (...)

I'm afraid this only works if:

Before you load your game for the first time after downloaded the HD texture pack DLC, you have to un-checking the .esp files under data files. Because, if you do not this, the new .bsa files (related with the DLC) will overwrite the "vanilla" .bsa files and the game will be "stuck" with the official HD texture pack DLC.

Am I wrong? :(

Thanks for that. It seems the DLC is closer to vanilla style textures, while Skyrim HD is sort of a retexture. I kind of prefer the DLC, considering it's official and it uses bsa files (easier to manage all my files) and it looks a bit better IMO. I'm not really sure which is better, still. :ahhh:

Not sure about that. Only 4 of my files were modified today for me, after installing the DLC (the 4 files associated with the DLC).
