No one is going to be honest if I ask, and no one is going to not pick it up, I think the best choice is to keep it, and store it safely somewhere, while you deposit little by little.

A woman got jailed in Britain for 6 months for picking up a bag she found in the bushes outside house. The bag contained a small amount of stolen clothing, looted from recent London riots.
She was a youth worker, no prior convictions, with 3 children of her own.

In Britain, we have more reason not to do opportunistic things like this now :)

If I hand it in I don't know if it will be claimed. If it does get claimed I don't know whether it would be put to good use. However if I keep it I know I can do some good with it. I'd like to think that I wouldn't succumb to temptation and spend it on myself, I'm a man of simple pleasures, I enjoy good food and video games but not enough to make a dent in $50.000.

I'd keep it. I'm poor and someone who just happened to drop a sack full of money is probably rich enough not to miss them.

or maybe it's the college tuition for a child who comes from a low-income family and that 50K was 18 years worth of savings specifically so they could get into a good college and achieve a higher standard of living than their parents.

just saying

I would probably return it. If no one took it then great for me. :P

Oh hey, free cellphone! Thanks HD! It's just what I needed!

Now to pass it on to an unsuspecting stranger. They'll be monitoring the wrong person; I'll have free reign! You're the best!

That gets a smiley face? Better for someone to pick it up and use it than for it to be lost forever. It also sounds like crazy injustice.

You have to realise there was a lot of stolen goods floating around, so she was receiving stuff that was obviously stolen goods.

Clearly the only explanation is that it was placed there by an eccentric, cancer-ridden billionaire as a test. By turning it in, I will signal to him that I am a kind, selfless, trustworthy soul, and he will name me the sole heir to his chocolate factory fortune.

Id keep it. Without question. I would also assume that because its $50,000 in cash it is there because of something illegal, thus taking it to the cops would be foolish. I would sit on it for a bit, pay attention to the local news to see if it was a bank robbery or if it was just some drug dealers stash, or whatever. If after a month or so nothing came up about a large sum of cash being taken/robbed then I would trickle spend it. Never touching a bank but what this money would allow me to do would be to pay for all my daily expenses in cash and save my paycheck. Say I wanted to by a motorcycle. I would buy it used off of a private seller and pay cash, I would not in any way shape or form let anyone know that I stumbled upon this money, friend, foe, or government official.

This. Sorry, but I would.

This is the best post I will read all day

@Turns- But do they KNOW she was recieving it intentionally knowing it was stolen goods? I mean, sometimes people are just clueless about the what ifs and only say 'ooh free stuff ', stupidity is not an excuse I know, but it does sound harsh to jail someone I presume is innocent (Unless she KNEW she was taking stolen goods)

I'd like to think I would take it to the police, for altruistic reasons - and hope the "finders Keepers if no claimers" urban myth is true.

But if anyone needs a non altruistic reason - thats not exactly an amount of cash normal people carry around - they use bank transfers, or cheques, or something else. If you're carrying around that much cash there's probably something dodgy going on - the cash could be marked or belong to someone who may not keep to the letter of the law in trying to get it back. The cash could also be marked and bring the police onto your back.

In all honesty I'd say there would be about a 90% chance that I kept it.

I would absolutely take it to the police, file a report, and wait for the required period of time. My folks raised me right.

I'd take about 10 grand and move the bag so that someone else finds it. Then I would use the money to supplement my normal income over the course of a year or two. I would never spend large amounts in any one place and only in places with lots of customers.

That much money just left somewhere can't be good. There's a good chance someone with a gun might be coming looking for them. Or it's a reality TV setup. Don't know which is worse :cold:

Burn it. You're obviously being monitored. This will send them a clear message.

:tinfoilhat:

Answers like this make me wonder what the financial situation of the people posting in this thread is. I mean, if I had any semblance of financial comfort, I'd most likely turn the money in to. But I don't. When you're looking at something that could give you the break that you and your family desperately need, is it really so easy to say "I would absolutely take it to the police"? I mean, sure, who couldn't use $50,000? But who really needs $50,000?
