Say you found a rufflesack with $50,000 in cash. Would

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 2:29 pm

(For starters, no I didn't find a sack of money, but oh how I wish I did)

So I like to pose morale choice questions to myself, and I just want to see how you all would react. Say you're strolling in the woods, a park, down an alleyway, whatever. You find this rufflesack lying there and curiousity gets the better of your, you find it's filled with $50,000 dollars (Or your respective countries equivalence of this amount). Now the question is, would you keep this sack of money, or would you turn it in? Someone could have lost this, it might have been dropped in a robbery, or some charitable person just left it, but the how did it get there is irrelevant, the key question is, would you keep it or turn it in?

I know it's considered the 'upstanding citizen's duty' and all, but I would be a liar if I said my greed didn't get the better of me. (Granted I would use it for sensible things) But still, I don't think I could hold that much unchecked money and not keep it.

What about you guys and girls?

I think I would have to take it. It would really help me getting started in advlt hood. I wouldn't use it to buy a car or anything, I would likely save it and eventually some of it would probably end up in my kid's post secondary fund. (I don't know about that though since I am only 15 right now :P )

I would probably think it was left there by a bad guy anyways. If it was, say 1,000,000 dollars then I don't think I could justify keeping that. If I did keep it then I would give most of it away.

Burn it. You're obviously being monitored. This will send them a clear message.

Who the hell is carrying around a rufflesack with $50,000 inside? And why would that person not be protecting that like crazy? I'd keep it.

This

People should realize: large, unexplained deposits trigger the IRS. So you can't put the money in the bank or invest or anything like that. You also can't spend it extravagantly. You can't enjoy the money unless you do it the legal way.

I'd return it. I used to work at a grocery store and I would find money and purses/wallets quite often and I always brought them to the front desk, this shouldn't be any different. The one who lost it may need it much more than I do. And/or it could be owed to someone who is dangerous.

I'd keep it. I'm poor and someone who just happened to drop a sack full of money is probably rich enough not to miss them.

Id keep it. Without question. I would also assume that because its $50,000 in cash it is there because of something illegal, thus taking it to the cops would be foolish. I would sit on it for a bit, pay attention to the local news to see if it was a bank robbery or if it was just some drug dealers stash, or whatever. If after a month or so nothing came up about a large sum of cash being taken/robbed then I would trickle spend it. Never touching a bank but what this money would allow me to do would be to pay for all my daily expenses in cash and save my paycheck. Say I wanted to by a motorcycle. I would buy it used off of a private seller and pay cash, I would not in any way shape or form let anyone know that I stumbled upon this money, friend, foe, or government official.

Same here, but boy would I be doing it grudgingly :)

It depends who the previous owner was and what Moral state they are in. If the person who last used this rufflesack was an evil drug dealer or just someone who is evil, I would keep the money. If someone legimitately lost this I would turn it in. If neither of those two situations come up then I probably would turn it in.

I don't know, I think I'd have to keep it simply because of the degree to which I'm delighted by the word "rufflesack".

I'd do the exact same thing actually. $50,000 is a lot of money.

I would give some to my parents to help them pay bills, then I would slowly put some of it into the bank + allow it to build on interest. then I would have a few thousand to spend on limited edition game stuff + other random stuff :)

but yeah, I would keep it.

Oh so am I, I also like the words Shenanigans and Pavillion as well. Such fun words to say.

@Donner- A cellphone? Hmmm. Seems legit. :D

@DEFRON- Oh the things video games and TV teach us. Thats why if I had that money, I'd either sit on it or slowly deposit it over months. To be honest, I dont think of flashy cars and clothes with that kind of money. I see it as being able to help me with my dream of settling in another country.

Take it to the police. May hope nobody claims it, but keeping large sums of money that aren't yours is a bad idea. When the actual owner turns up you'd best not have spent it.

I'd have to move to America since I can't really convert all that cash to pounds without drawing attention to myself. :(
