Say you found a rufflesack with $50,000 in cash. Would

Take it to the cops and hope no one claims it

On a side note, something like this already happened a few weeks ago. The guy turned the money to the cops.

I actually had this happen to me once, only it wasn't a rufflesack, and it wasn't quite 50 Gs, in fact it was a lot less, and it wasn't actually me who found it but other than that.. wait what was the question?

An unattended bag? My first thought would be incendiary device.

50K?
It's a drop, it's not some honest law abiding citizens kid's college money or life savings they dug out of a pickle jar in the garden.
Chances are whomever is waiting on the pickup is watching you, and they won't be unarmed or amused.

Answers like this make me wonder what the financial situation of the people posting in this thread is. I mean, if I had any semblance of financial comfort, I'd most likely turn the money in to. But I don't. When you're looking at something that could give you the break that you and your family desperately need, is it really so easy to say "I would absolutely take it to the police"? I mean, sure, who couldn't use $50,000? But who really needs $50,000?

Both of my parents are unemployed, my step sister is the same age as me, but has the mind of a three year old, and my father has severe spinal and back issues.

I'd turn it in, and wait.

In retrospect, I have no idea what I would do. I know what I think I would do, but not what I would actually do.

Well, if being a little paranoid, it could be marked money so using it would mean it could be tracked down to me. So to answer the question, yes, I would keep them but I would launder them before spending them.

Step 1: investigate local area around bag. Make sure no one is watching, that all nearby cars are empty, and that no one is at the windows.

step 2: move bag to poorly frequented location and examine the bills. If the bills are consecutively marked, it would imply that they were stolen from a bank. If consecutively marked, move to 3a. If not, examine bag itself for tracking devices stiched into the surface or hidden in pockets. Then examine the bills themselves for odd devices. If clean, move to 3b.

step 3a: return bag to police if bills are consecutively marked. If there are hidden devices in bag, burn bag.

Step 3b: place money in book bag. Abandon rufflesack.

Step 4: Over time, deposit portion of funds into a savings acount in small increments. Acquire a safe for long term storage of the money. Over time, use portions of the money to buy CD's or stocks, or some other investment.

step 5: If I have reason to believe someone knows about the money and intends some form of action, take the safe and dump it into the chesepeake. The safe should be heavy enough to sink, and will only be recoverable by chance. For security purposes, any serial numbers or other identifiers should be removed from the safe.

I don't havta put much thought into it... I would definitely keep the moola.

Take the rucksack into the tub, cover myself in garbage bags, and close the shower-curtain (incase the money is dye-packed) and then dig in. If I get splattered, toss the garbage bag suit and use the cash in less reputable places than banks... Most places won't look twice if the denomintaions aren't bigger than a 20$.

This

People should realize: large, unexplained deposits trigger the IRS. So you can't put the money in the bank or invest or anything like that. You also can't spend it extravagantly. You can't enjoy the money unless you do it the legal way.

You could spend it all on the little things, like groceries. It'll last a life time.

I'd def keep it and let no one know about it, slowly, ever so slowly deposit it in the bank like I said and spend it on little things.

I'm more concerned with this Rufflesack fellow

If he gives me the money he'll probably want my first born child or something unless I can guess his real name.

I would absolutely take it to the police, file a report, and wait for the required period of time. My folks raised me right.

I'd do this. If it were $100, then yeah...I'd probably take it, but $50 000 is a lot. If no one claims it, I'll keep half to myself and give the other half to a friend that genuinely needs it (he's getting alternative surgery in the US).

free moneyz? tempting to keep, but i don't think so. i like to think of myself as honest with that kind of thing. and i would need to practice what i preach and do the right and noble thing. of course, i think my past experience shows what i'd do though better than my wondering. i once found some money, a decent amount at that, and, lo and behold, gave it away, basically; it was next to some vendor's kiosk and at that moment the idea that the money just fell out of their window seemed probable to me so i turned it in to them. got a bottle of soda as a reward... for the amount of money well over the price of that bottle. i don't even remember how much it was, i didn't count it well at that time, but it was a considerable amount of money. to this day i haven't gotten over how, (hm, naive, i guess?) i am.

so yeah, i'd say i'd not be keeping the 50K. even though 50k could greatly benefit me right now; Mom and Dad, i, my sis, and my bro all have credit card and other debts(money borrowed from some people) to pay off and what's left would probably go to a)mortgage payments, b)some bettering up of the house. or more likely, both a) and B).

I'd keep it. I have no idea who the cash belonged to, so why not. It would be my secret stash.

I'd def keep it and let no one know about it, slowly, ever so slowly deposit it in the bank like I said and spend it on little things.

Sounds smart.

I'm having a hard time believing that. If you go to the police with $50,000 they will claim it and keep it for themselves.

Id keep it. Without question. I would also assume that because its $50,000 in cash it is there because of something illegal, thus taking it to the cops would be foolish. I would sit on it for a bit, pay attention to the local news to see if it was a bank robbery or if it was just some drug dealers stash, or whatever. If after a month or so nothing came up about a large sum of cash being taken/robbed then I would trickle spend it. Never touching a bank but what this money would allow me to do would be to pay for all my daily expenses in cash and save my paycheck. Say I wanted to by a motorcycle. I would buy it used off of a private seller and pay cash, I would not in any way shape or form let anyone know that I stumbled upon this money, friend, foe, or government official.

This. I feel horrible for saying this, but I don't think I could stand to let $50,000 out of my hands like that

Hell yeah, I would. These last four or so years have not been the best (thanks dad), even before the economy took a nose dive. I could do a lot with that cash. If it didn't go towards school, it would definitely go towards a place for myself, as well as a little something towards the mother I would be more or less abandoning.

If I kept it, I'd live in constant fear of being jumped by some mob cronies or something. A rucksack full of money isn't likely to be associated with anything legal, so best not get involved. I think I'd leave it where I found it and walk away. Whistling innocently.
