Not sure how to take that response.
But seriously. It's at worst a 9/10.
On a scale from 1-10, I look at it like a grading scale: 9-10 = A | 8 = B | 7 = C | 6 = D | 5 and below = F
So if I were to "grade" Skyrim, it would be a for sure and for certain "A". Now, is it an "A", an "A-", or an "A+"?
Well, let's list what I was looking for from Skyrim, and how it stacks up:
Pure, Raw Enjoyment:10 / 10 - I think that when it comes down to it, this is the most fun game I have ever played. I feel it is a beautiful blend of RPG style skill based and real time combat. It has a fun, fast paced combat system that still encourages character development by training your skills. It combines melee combat and magic combat beautifully, though I can't truly comment on the ranged combat because I haven't particularly tried out archery in this game.
Character Development and Customization:10 / 10 - Perhaps the biggest thing I look for in an Elder Scrolls game is just how much I can make my character to my own specializations. While many people want the deep "consequences" of story driven choices, I revel in the fact that Elder Scrolls is about the story that
Icreate as I play, not the story that the game provides me out of the box. While there are many amazing RPG's with some great linear stories that have "consequence" for your choice, those games will never live up to Elder Scrolls in my book, which make the story
mine.
While on paper, there are
less choices in skills that previous games, I actually find
more choice. There may be less skills in number, but the variety that each of those skills has ultimately leads to more things that a player is able to do. Thus, I am able to create new types of characters that I was never able to create before, and as such, it gives me more enjoyment in the character development aspect than previous games. From a character creation and development stand point, Skyrim is by far my favorite Elder Scrolls game, with Morrowind a very close second, and Oblivion a slightly more distant (but not too distant) third.
Living World:10 / 10 - Again, the best of the series as far as I'm concerned. The world
feels alive, it feels like I am truly adventuring through a brutal, hostile land. Cities are now more alive than ever, with both scripted and random events that add to the immersion. NPC's feel more alive, and seem to have more to talk about when you talk to them. Quests are obtained by more than just "talking" to NPC's - NPC's will approach you, you will overhear arguments and conflicts, receiving and doing quests feels so much more natural this time around, than randomly talking to some guy on the street, and accepting a quest to go find his long lost heirloom sword.
Story:8 / 10 - I said above that story isn't the main factor, and it's not. I'd like a respectable story at least, and Skyrim's certainly is respectable. But in all honesty, I've never played a Bethesda game for the story. Their stories have never been their strong point. It's an enjoyable story, with more choice than seen before in games like Morrowind and Oblivion, but it's not some incredible, mind numbing story.
Aesthetics:10 / 10 - This doesn't mean specifically graphics - for instance, Morrowind at this point in time is a graphically inferior game, however, I still find it to have a very pleasing aesthetic style. On the other hand, Oblivion is obviously graphically superior to Morrowind, but I don't find it to have quite as pleasing of an aesthetic in many areas, particularly people. I think the game is absolutely beautiful. The color palette is gorgeous, the landscapes and environments can be breathtaking, the people characters have a great look. I can't really think of much I don't like about the aesthetics.
In another area of aesthetics, I absolutely love the UI, the menus, and the skills menu. It all looks so crisp and organized.
Bugs haven't been a problem, nor crashing, nor any of the other petty things that people have complained about.
So yea, at the very least, the game gets a 9, more likely a 9.5, and just for [censored] and giggles I'll give it a 10 just because it's my favorite game ever, and part of a group of games that stand on their own level above the rest.
