I was also wondering if this even works at all if you marry your housecarl. The poor things seem to be very confused after the wedding. Argis lives in our Markarth house as usual, but now he uses more objects there - like the alchemy lab, the cooking pot, and his own bed (sigh). When he talks to my character he alternates between "My Thane" comments and calling her "dear". It's weird. But he will not sleep in the same bed, ever, which is annoying.
I can verify this works, and you should not have to load a prior save. My character married Senna, and moved into Breezehome. Then they moved to Solitude. Then they moved to Markarth. Always well rested with no lover's comfort. Then, he suggested moving to her place (Temple of Dibella) and stayed there (not slept) for 24hrs. When they moved back to Markarth, the loving comfort began working. Although she also uses the cooking animation more, he did lose the dialog for the home cooked meal in the process. He doesnt mind, and can fix his own plate. She is always cooking.... and doing other things now, so she is forgiven. Cant address the part about being a housecarl/follower, since she is neither.
My character does not tolerate male housecarls. Lydia is in Breezehome. Jordis is in Solitude. Iona is in Honeyside. Windhelm is un-owned, and he and Senna live alone in Markarth.... sans housecarl. A heavily buffed out Ria has a key to his Arch-Mage quarters fwiw.

maybe add some relevant affectionate dialogue option you could engage in with your spouse if you want them to join you there. Otherwise, what's the point?
