SkyBoost (topic 4)

Is this better than TESVAL?
Most people get better fps with this, as it has some extra optimizations that aren't in TeSVAL yet.

finally got round to doing some benchmarking on my slow 3 year old laptop (1.8ghz dual core Intel, Nvidia 8400M GT, 2Gb RAM and yes i already know its below min spec), tested in Markarth (Skyboost, the Ragged Flagon, Dragonsreach, only getting about 2 fps more with Skyboost, so there definitely is a difference, even though it's small (for now). I'm not clear whether Skyboost/TESVAL was supposed to help those with low hardware specs, and i'm not really expecting to get amazing quality/speed. i do like the idea of not upgrading till TES6 though

it scales better with stronger performing processors, depending on the marchitecture of that cpu, however your GPU is more likely the limiting factor given its limited SP count and 128bit memory interface

Not necesarily better, it just has more optimizations and its easier to install, it depends on your point of view, but i would definetly choose SkyBoost over TESVAL, though it all started with TESVAL.

Overlooking the Tree @ Dragonsreach

Vanilla - 21 fps
SkyBoost - 21 fps

I have no clue of what I'm doing wrong, the asiloader.log says;

loading asi plugin : "SkyBoost.asi"
asi loaded : "SkyBoost.asi" at 0x729B0000

So I guess it loads?

Not using TESVAL.

This is so frustrating, I REALLY want this mod to work!

Hm so his cpu is similar to mine i had on ultra 22 fps from whiterun and when i lowered settings constant 30+ fps i got fps limiter so i don't care for more as long as there is no shutter and smooth game play im happy.

Out of curiosuty what's your rig wedis?

As already mentioned, Skyboost and TESVAL will only give you a performance increase if your CPU is a bottleneck.

If after installing any of these (correctly) you don't see a benefit, then your CPU is either very weak anyway, or your gpu is also a bottleneck.

Discarded arrows sticking point first in the ground everywhere.

Is this possibly connected to skyboost or a vanilla thing? Otherwise I've seen nothing that might be called a bug.

Or could it be that there's no bottleneck at all?

I doubt my 5850 bottlenecks my i7.

There's always a bottleneck (unless the games FPS is capped, etc).

If you're getting constant 99% GPU Usage, then your GPU is bottlenecking and an upgrade or overclock would increase your framerate. If you're getting <99% GPU usage then generally you're being bottlenecked by your CPU and an overclock or upgrade would see an FPS increase (until you reach 99% GPU usage).

It's not always one way though, especially in Skyrim. Towns or villages are far more CPU intensive than indoors or roaming the wilderness for instance. If you're having an FPS drop in the wilderness, chances are it's your GPU (you'll need to monitor GPU usage to confirm). The FPS drops people are experiencing in towns are because of a CPU bottleneck though, for the most part.

I'll confirm I got a snazzy 40% FPS increase at the dreaded dragonreach->tree view out of this mod, its definitely fun for the whole family.

That's a vanilla problem.

Thanks for this mod! It is the reason I finally decided to join the gamesas forums. :o)

i7 920 @ 3.8 GHz, 6 GB DDR3 @ 1500ish MHz, gtx 580 stock clocks, Win 7. Using settings above Ultra (except shadow definition) + mild FXAA useage.
60 second benchmark in Markarth from the worst spot I could find showed a 55% (!) improvement in minimum fps in the worst spot in Markarth, with a nearly 50% improvement in average fps.

@ Alexander Blade
I'm not a programmer, but the way I've seen the workflow for development of this mod describe, might it help you to know of more places in the worldspace that show severe cpu limitations? Perhaps I've found a spot that's calling bits you haven't touched yet. At the Goldenglow Estate, on the easternmost spit of land by the house, facing west towards the estate at night, I showed ~26 fps (10 worse than the worst part of Markarth) both with and without FXAA enabled. Maybe it won't help the code profiling thing, but it is worth a shot.

No. The exe was changed in the most recent patch by adding the LAA flag and as a result all other versions have a different exe.

How would I be able to monitor GPU usage? I'd like to test this out.

MSI Afterburner: http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

Enable the on-screen-display with GPU usage and you can monitor it in-game.

So, here's my deal...

I'm running a Phenom II x4 975 BE @ 3.9 GHz, XFX 5870 1GB OC'ed slightly, and 8GB of DDR3.

With SkyBoost, getting 30-60 FPS, with maybe a 46 FPS average. Which is totally doable for me at 1920x1080.

Running FXAA, no AA, 8x AF, all the Game settings set to Quality on CCC.

Using Ultra settings, Ugrids = 7, a few other ini tweaks as well.

Running a few mods, the most demanding being the HD textures, although I am using the "lite" versions of texture packs. Ideally, I'd like to be using the full HD packs. When I use them, my FPS tanks considerably to a high of 40 FPS I'd say, average of 30.

Ideally, I'd like to have some more FPS in order to play some higher-quality and future mods.

Is it possible/beneficial to run SkyBoost and TESVAL at the same time? How so?

Also, as a side question, once the CK comes out... will we see any more strides in performance increasing/optimization?

There's no benefit to running both at the same time. SkyBoost is a fork of TESVAL and contains all of the optimizations in it.

It is possible, but it is pointless. Skyboost takes TESVAL's original code and implements those fixes as well as additional fixes that TESVAL didn't address.
