Skyrim feels more like Fallout than The Elder Scrolls

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 4:38 am

But Fallout 3 had no visual similarities to previous TES games.

The first time I played FO3 upon seeing the character animation and the camera and the way the world was shaped I immediately thought of Oblivion (its much nicer than Oblivion though). Whereas when I played Dragon Age Origins for example I could zoom at to a BG II type of view and it really did feel like a follow up to BG games, whereas FO3 felt like a TES game not a Fallout game. Not bashing FO3, great game I need to play more, my computer was not good enough at the time, needs reinstall since I got a better machine

Oh really? That's funny, I don't see any similarities at all betwen Oblivion and Fallout 3. But I guess it's just the same as all the people on this thread that don't see the similarities between Fallout 3 and Skyrim that I do.

The only visual similarity to me are the rocks, for some reason they tend to remind me of Fallout 3.

I do see similarities between Skyrim and FO3, I was just trying to say I think thats because FO3 looks like an TES game. Although its probably going to be that way its made by the same company in the same engine. At least Beth stuck to their own style though, there are so many games out there that look like WoW now, bleh (ahem... Kingdoms of Amalur).

Edit: Other than the engine, and some gameplay mechanics, they are very different. I agree that they are somewhat similar, but I personally have very different experiences with both.
But it is the game mechanics that define this right?
Is it so different from comparing a Star Wars Chess set to a Civil Wars Chess Set?

** But on that note: I would expect two sets by the same artist to share noticible similarities in the look despite the different subject and setting of the sets.

Lotta people not actually reading the OP o.0.

Skyrim is certainly edgier and more gritty then oblivion, so i can see where you are coming from. The visual flow is more like oblivion but the style does remind me of Fallout.

I completly disagree. Just for [censored] and giggles what would you change to make it less fallouty?

The only thing that's from Fallout is no underwater combat, lockpicking, the slow motion, and Perks.

Playing a Fallout game, I get the feeling of isolation, and abandonment and lots of death around. Oblivion, and Skyrim are full of life, it's a living breathing world, you can just wander around enjoying the animals, insects, fauna, aquatic life. etc.

Perhaps they've not read the edits to the OP; as I've just done.

Visually the games do not appear too similar to me ~unless one is thinking along the lines of "The Six million Dollar Man" looking kind of similar to "The Norseman" ~in that case I can see it.

Well I can't say really because my point is that I would prefer it to have it's own unique visual style, so what to change would have to be for Bethsda to decide. I wouldn't care what as long as it looked good and didn't feel as much like Fallout. I do still love Skyrim though, so theres no specific visual style that I'm wishing for.

The only similarities I see it's a large world with lots to do, violence, blood, gore, destruction and women with large briasts in skimpy armor and the objective is to kill or be killed.

Other than that it's a completely different game.

What exactly looks too similar? The cave walls(?); Stone and dirt?

** Or do you mean more of a distinct art style... ( I'm not suggesting WoW's, but it does have a distinctively different art style of its own ~for instance).

These games have very similar gameplay when one looks past the paint.

Indeed, and that is why Fallout 3 is "Oblivion with guns". However, i really don't see Skyrim as "Fallout 3 with magic", "see" neither literally nor symbolically

However i don't doubt that Fallout 4 will be "Skyrim with guns" :hehe: And TES 6 will be "look what we removed this time!" :lmao:

Well the people (compare Skyrim bandits to Fallout 3 raiders) and the caves (not dungeons in general, just caves) remind me a lot of Fallout. And someone pointed out earlier that the rocks look similar, which I agree with, but that's not as big of a deal to me, rocks are rocks. I guess a big part of it is that Skyrim feels a lot darker and grittier than previous TES games, which I actually like, so I suppose it would be hard to remove the Falloutish elements of the art design without also removing the darker feel, since Fallout 3 was also a dark, gritty feeling game.

I thought the design wasn't too similar, but thats just me. I think it has to do with Fallout being the most recent game. A lot of people need to read the actual post instead of commenting on the title. He is talking about the visuals, not the gameplay.

Agree with the OP in that I too felt some similarities, especially in some of the dungeons. Probably because of the similar textures. But IMO, its the other way around. FO3 resembled TES. In fact, a lot of people said FO3 felt like Oblivion with guns.

I can agree with the OP. I have never played a TES game before, nor a fallout game. Neither are really my style of game, but I am quite enjoying Skyrim.
Anyway, in participating in Skyrim stuff online, people are always talking about Bethesda (whom I had never heard of) and this Fallout game. I checked it out on youtube and my honest first reaction after watching one minute of footage was "oh, its skyrim only in a weird setting with guns."

Thats my opinion. :)

Fallout 3 = Oblivion with guns and radiation.

Skyrim = Fallout 3 with swords and magic.

Visually? No, I don't see it. As much as i enjoy the technology and the backstory, the actual setting of the Fallout world depressed me. Blasted and dead; ruins and wreckage everywhere. It was a sh**hole. Skyrim, to me is beautiful. Snowy mountains, trees and creatures running around. it's a lively place. It's what I always saw in my head when I was playing Nords in Oblivion and Morrowind.

Obviously there are no robots in Skyrim.

*cough* Dwemer? *cough* :P
*knows someone must have done that before me*

But ribbing aside, I agree the visual style feels like 'Fallout with dragons' similar to how FO3 kinda felt, gameplay-wise, like 'Oblivion with guns'. There's still all the magic and rich lore that makes TES what it is, but the landscape is barren -though I understand fully WHY it is- and some other things about it that I just can't put my finger on evoke a 'Hey, that reminds me of FO3/FO:NV' thought from me.

On the other side of that, it feels as much like Morrowind in other regards as it does FO3 in those. The armor, weapon and character aesthetics remind me of Morrowind, the dungeon layouts resemble Morrowind more than Fallout OR Oblivion and the visual flavor of the world reminds me a lot of those outlying towns and buildings in Morrowind's Imperial cities and, of course, Solstheim.

And for completeness of review, the core systems feel like a more or less happy mix of Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3, even though this was entirely about visuals. :)
