Skyrim feels more like Fallout than The Elder Scrolls

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 8:14 am

To me, Skyrim seems more like Fallout 3 (with a different setting, obviously) than the sequel to Oblivion. Of course Bethesda is going to use ideas from Fallout 3, it would be stupid of them to ignore the progress they made in their last game, but Oblivion felt like it's own unique game to me. Skyrim feels too much like Fallout, it's hard for me to feel like I'm really playing the next Elder Scrolls game...

The looks of the NPCs and caves especially remind me a lot of Fallout 3.

Does anyone else notice the similarity?

Edit:

Just to clarify, I'm 100% talking about the way the game looks visually. I'm not trying to say that the gameply in Skyrim feels like Fallout. There are a few things gameplay-wise that seem to be carried over from Fallout (like the lockpicking for example) but I'm talking more about the art styles of the two games feeling too similar.

Absolutely not. In what way does Fallout 3 remind you of Skyrim? I don't see it. At all.

Yeah I see the similarity, But you see that with a lot of developers that specialize in one type of game. For example, Dragon Age and Mass Effect, although very different games, have an underlying style that you can easily notice.

Visually, not gameplay obviously.

I strongly disagree. None of your points in your arguement really strike out as Falloutish, even the perks (which I hate) are nothing like Fallout. I don't like the trend of cutting features and dumbing down (which will continue because it worked to a massive succes), but Skyrim is in fact TES, and feels like TES.

I wasn't a fan of Fallouts art style. I understand that it represented the atmosphere very well, and when you found the oasis the beauty of lush greens was somewhat overwhelming, but the game felt too sharp. There wasn't a nice smoothness in the textures, or the color gradients which was unappealing to me.

Of course they will feel the same. They are made by the same people for the same people. There is allot of crossover.

Legion - Legion/NCR
Stormcloakes - Brotherhood
Bandits - Raiders

I can't be bothered to go one because it would take ages. But yeah they are similar in some ways and completely different in others.

Well it's hard to elaborate much more than I already did, I just see a lot of similarities in the way Skyrim looks compared to Fallout 3. I think the people are the biggest thing. Maybe you just disagree, I can understand how some people might not notice it as much, if at all.

Legion - Legion/NCR

New Vegas was not made by the people who made Skyrim.

I can see a slight similarity. That's it. It's a completely different setting and age so I guess I'm maybe paying more attention to the clothes of that particular era or something.

What?

No, nothing like Fallout. The ambient sounds are much more varied, different music, much more varied terrain, alchemy bits, much different creatures.

Completely agreed!

I was wondering when a thread like this would start up.

What with the slow motion final kills, perk system, no classes, dull repetitive random encounters, companions and dead world Skyrim feels like a mix of TES and a bit Fallout, with a much different setting of course.

I can't really agree with OP on this. The only thing that was trully Fallout-like in Skyrim was the exact lift of lockpicking from Fallout 3. That didn't bother me, as I am quite good at doing it compared to the side view, tumbler mini game in Oblivion that I svcked at. I auto attempted always and made obtaining Skeleton key a priority...

I actually feel good about removing the classes. Now, I can roleplay a lot more instead of the game holding my hand telling me what my skills should be.

I chock this up to the out of place UI style (this clean "Apple" UI is just blech) and the animation style. Though the area around Riften and Whiterun artistically reminds me a LOT of FO3 as well.

I see tons of Fallout 3 ported over to Skyrim. The sound you hear every time a quest updates is straight from FO3. So is the quest text that flashes on the screen. Having a system of perks is pure Fallout. Eating food heals damage (just like in Real Life, erm, I mean in Fallout). The lockpicking system is directly ported from FO3. http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/5292/tesv2011111818101060.jpg It is very clear that the devs took a great deal of ideas and outright material from FO3 and put them into Skyrim. I keep waiting to see a Brotherhood of Steel Paladin walking out from behind a rock, or hear Liberty Prime's voice: "Capitalism is Life, The Thalmor is death!"

Yeah, I'm sick of all that radiated desert and robots shooting at me while I'm killing dragons. Yes some similarities like I've already listed. But outside of the normal leveling of RPGs and quests. Along with perks like fo, I really don't see it.

Eh, while Skyrim is grungier and not a fluffy golden migical elf forest like Cyrodiil, I still think it is it's own unique, awesome game.
