Skyrim is amazing in 1600p. It's almost overwhelming.

I just upgraded my TV this past weekend. Until then, I was running my PS3 on an old 19" tube TV I've had since the early '90s. Now I'm staring at a nice 24" 1080p HD-TV and...just wow. After 134 hours of play on my main Dunmer character, I only just found out that he has scars on his face. I thought Skyrim was beautiful before, but now it's absolutely gorgeous. And, I can finally read the in-game books without having to look them up on a wiki.

And now you dont know how you managed before? :D I did not upgrade quite as much, i started using a HDMI cable.

LOL @ anyone who thinks HDTV is just a "fad" to get people to buy new, expensive TVs.

Now you know why everyone was upset at the graphics at launch and how Bethesda scrambled like eggs to patch it.

Glad they did. I love the scenery in this game. Even the sounds help immerse me in the game. Really, how often do any of you pay attention to the chirping birds?

I love the sound too. I've got a pretty good surround sound setup and when my wife and kids aren't home I crank that svcker up ridiculously loud. If you've never fought a dragon with maximum volume, I highly recommend it. It is awesome.

I spent the first hour playi9ng in amazement but then anger set in because I was thinking about all the games and lost time I spent without these beautiful colors. I had to turn the game off and go to bed. A good friend of mine talked me down the next day at work

I can't even imagine playing newer games than the first Xbox with SDTVs...It would be horrible, sheesh.

After every upgrade things are amazing until you become used to them. Then you become spoilt and can't easily go back...except if you're an old guy who still enjoys playing good old retro games.

Skyrim is mean, every modern game does not seem to be designed for my TV>

'Hey who has a TV that was made before 2010?' Random Bethesda person

'Uuuh, no one! Lets make the text unreadable and the resolution streachy' Todd Howard

That is my only issue. But it's all modern games that do this on my TV. Thankfully my laptop can just about run Skyrim... just. 20fps constantly on all low settings and it can CTD or make my laptop explode.
It's still better than forcing the majority of players (who have newer screens) to watch HUGE fonts. Of course it would be the best if the games still had options even for those old setups...

Be carful about native resolutions and TVs, most console games are displayed in 1280x720 resolutions. If your TV is larger the image will become distorted and stretched, reducing visual quality. Not sure what Skyrim's native setting is though, but i've never heard of a console game being 1920x1080.

There are a few games with native 1080p; not a lot.

I'm pretty sure Skyrim is 720p. And HDTVs nowadays automatically correct to whatever the native resolution is so the days of going in and manually switching should be over for the most part..

Does it fill out your screen completely, or is it a smaller box than full size?

Skyrim is 720p, but it is worth noting that most good HDTVs have much better scalers than your average PC monitor, so the distortion when running non-native resolutions is a lot less noticeable.

Full screen. Nothing cut off in the corners like my monitor used to

You might be able to get an even better resolution quality if you rescale the picture size down to 720p if its not there already. I had this trouble with Halo3 and Fable 2, I bought a TV with 1080p thinking I would get the same resolution as my monitor, just on a bigger screen. The result was actually much worse, closer to 800x600 then what I thought it would give me. The image quality dramatically improved once I rescaled my screen size, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth.

I play on a 24" monitor at 1920x1200. I suspect the extra 120 pixel height makes more of a difference when I'm writing code than when I play games.

I tried playing on a 50" TV with an HDMI cable. I didn't like it. TVs are designed to treat the signal from an HDMI cable as though it were a crummy signal from a TV receiver. They scale and crop bits of it by default. Some TVs have a gaming mode that eliminates this. Others don't. I spent an hour fiddling with the display settings of the TV and it never looked as good as my monitor.

I remember when I finally was able to get the HDMI cable working. All the games look either much better or they look like someone spray painted Boat Ack on Okami. Luckily, I will never try an HDMI cable on a PS2(Okami looked bad enough when it was forced into 1080p...). Only difference I saw with Skyrim post HDMI was the sound wasn't so obnoxious. I have no idea why it took me so long to figure out how to get a cord that simply hooks into a game system and a TV to work, though. Must be me being used to games on the PC saying, "Have fun taking two days to get us to work!"

Or I am an idiot when it comes to simple stuff. I can do complex stuff and function better while doing so than I can figuring out how to work a shower.

Good headphones are almost as good, but they hurt my ears after a few hours. I've got a set of Tritton AX pro headphones for when we have houseguests so I can play after they go to sleep. They have four speakers in each ear for true 5.1 in a headphone. I like to hear where things are in the game, espically since I have the HUD off most of the time.
I generally don't play for more than a few hours.

Also, good headphones means they shouldn't hurt your head after only a few hours. I would recommend leaving the gaming store for a guitar center or someplace with audiophile type headphones. the difference is immeasurable.

My tritons get used by my son nowadays. Never thought much of the 'surround' effect they produce and they sound horrible otherwise.

I actually freaked out when I went from an Xbox at 1080i component to an hdmi at 1080p on the same tv. Kind of silly to not kiss Sony's butt and pop in a bluray player. I guess we will have to wait for the next gen. The games are mostly 720, but the scaler is decent in the Xbox.
It was surprising.
4k is the next buzzword in hd. It will take a few years, and it's really only obvious on the projectors with huge screens. Tvs with 4k will be ridiculous someday, and we will be laughing about 1080p.

Okay, maybe not a fad, but an unnecessary option?

I can't count the number of people who claim they see no difference in visual quality.
HD just refers to 1080p, which refers to the resolution of 1920x1080. More pixels == more quality. Its like having more paper for writing your story, or a larger canvas for your painting. Reaching this resolution was only a matter of time for technology to be able to support it and at a reasonable cost.

Resolution will only go up as technology improves.

Actually, HD refers to 720p and up. In Australia, even 576p qualifies I believe.

I keep my SD TV to enjoy playing SNES, Genesis, and ps1(and some ps2)games. Obviously I use my HD for watching movies or playing current gen games. But since I love older games so much, I plan on keeping a SD Tv as well. Amazingly even some of my SNES games batteries still work and can save games. Although I doubt they last much longer.
