Skyrim: New Vegas

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 10:45 am

After playing a lot of New Vegas recently, please hire the Obsidian guys back and make a Skyrim spin off crafted like New Vegas.

Skyrim is great for what it is, like FO3 was great for what it was.

but the New Vegas approach, going old school and bringing back the full hardcoe RPG tricks is something that just needs to happen

That would be the best of all worlds, yes. But it would annoy the folks who just want an empty, mindless nature sim where they can wander around and play with their sock puppets. And after all, the game has to stay the way it is to keep them happy, ya know.

I doubt they'll outsource their only in-house IP of note to a third party developer.

It could be interesting to see another take on it though.

There's a reason why that worked with Fallout. If Bethesda, a team that makes TES since forever, can't nail the TESest TESish TES in a 5 year cycle, I doubt another team who has no idea how to TES can TES it for us right.

I would like Bethesda to provide us more RPG mechanics themselves, they don't really need another studio to do this.

FONV was written really well in my opinion and the quests were well structured and interesting(most of them anyway). The game was buggy as hell on release though. Skyrim on the other hand, bug wise I have had very few problems, nothing major, some of the quest lines are a bit short and feel as if they were rushed at times though. Now if you could put the two Dev teams together, :fallout: :tes:

yeah, I actually thought skyrim would take a lot from new vegas, but it took nothing. In fact it feels like less of an rpg than even fallout 3, which they made for christs sake. I don't even play skyrim any more, haven't even finished anything in the game, I'm honestly waiting for a massive all-encompassing overhaul ala OOO before I even think about playing it again. Well, if the ones who created TES can't make a good TES game (according to some people, but not me) then what makes you think Obsidian could?

isn't that the point of this thread? New vegas is a much much better rpg, in the style of a bethesda game

I wouldn't buy a TES spinoff made by another studio, like I don't buy music covers. I prefer the originals. I'm sure Obsidian are good at their area of expertise, but I prefer TES made by Bethesda by principle, seeing how they still have no competition in this niche after all this time.

Using fallout 3 as a template, they improved the game mechanics in nearly every way.

Really not. Obsidian isn't Bethesda. I didn't enjoy FO:NV as much as FO3, honestly. Yes, the quest structure is better, but it wasn't nearly as "open world". Obsidian writes better quests, but their world design was much more boring and drab than Beth's.

Which may be why I didn't like FO:NV as much - I went into it expecting a Beth game. And it's just not.

So yeah.... FO:NV may have used Beth's game engine, but it wasn't "in the style" of a Beth game.

I take it you skipped Fallout 3 then?

You're right. They did.
But that doesn't mean it's in the style of a Bethesda game, does it?
Is Quake like that? Is Dishonored like that? Is Brink?
All those are Bethesda games. :whistling:

When you use a game as a template, you are modding. New Vegas is a big mod for Fallout 3 so yeah, it would have been silly to work so much on a mod and not improve the original. However, they did screw up the open world feeling, their game has much less incentives to explore.

Haha, nice observation but no, I didn't skip it because I hadn't played the originals. I played it because it was made by bethesda but I'm not impressed, I prefer TES as a universe.

Well fallout 3 was made by Bethesda game studios.
Quake, dishonored and Brink were not.
So was fallout 3 in the "style" of a bethesda game?

Is not every game just a "mod" of the orginal in some form?
Also, explore what exactly? What incentives do you need?
Fallout was never about exploring, it was about Story.
And almost every location in NV has a story.

Wow. You took the words right out of my mouth. I agree with this entirely. Absolutely loved FO3. Not so much NV. I'm trying my hardest to play it now but I just don't think it's that interesting to explore. Questlines are great, but everyone you're told to go talk to hides behind a door or four that requires a loading screen. So, between going back and forth to talk to people and having to constantly step through loading screen portals dozens of time in between just to complete a quest gets quite a bit tedious. That's just my opinion though.

That said, I definitely don't hate NV, I just prefer Bethesda games. I like Obsidian too, as I loved the original Fallout games, so don't get me wrong. Obviously, this is totally a matter of opinion as there are a lot of people who disagree with me.
