There's nothing wrong with the occassional fetch quest, if there's some depth, intrigue, and characters along the way. Sometimes I want to feel like I'm on a classic "adventure". Not the way that term is thrown around today, but a real quest. A "fetch quest" where you're a noble or nefarious adventurer. You need to find some mystical item for some mysterious purpose and along the way you run into interesting enemies, strange characters, and you learn more about what's really going on. A "fetch quest" had better feel like an actual QUEST, and not busy work.

the only reason there are so many fetch quests though is it gives you incentive to go out and explore the world which is absolutely incredible, sure you wont remember the quest but you will probably remember the dungeons

I'm kinda disppointed with the lack of varitaion with questing too but am expecting this to be adressed with the DLC.

Lots of comments here about this being standard for RPG but the OOO mod for Oblivion shows it can be done. These were complicated quests which most of the time didn't get journal entries until you hit key points in the quest and most of the time you never knew you started until the pieces start to come together.

Here is a rough guide to one of the quests, Shadows in a Struggle for Power, that was posted on Filefront as there is no official guide to completing them.

As you can see the first journal entry doesn't happen until the 5th paragraph and it's scope is varied an story driven.

And yes Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul was amazing. He, or she...I'm not really sure, managed to strike the balance between depth and accessibility. I love video games, but I'll be the first to admit I'm not very good at them. The OOO mod made me feel immersed, it made the game come alive, it was simply remarkable. Yet all the while I never once felt overwhelmed. I think many video game companies would do well to anolyze this mod and study what it did right.

I have my most fun in Skyrim when I avoid the towns, except to sell loot, and just wander about the land looking for things to get into. I find a ruin and fight my way through it because it's there and because I want to see what's in it, not because so and so sent me there to retrieve x item. It gives the game more of an adventure feel than a fetch quest feel. Eventually I get back to a few quests but at some point I just take off again in a random direction and explore. The random exploration is really where Skyrim shines its brightest.

It has jumped on the fetch quest band wagon that RPGs have a lot of. I have fetched so many swords and heir looms over the years.

ES has been on that wagon for a while. I think it even started that way.

Where was the special area in Skyrim that wasn't main quest, which had it's own texture pack?

How about going into another person's memories to get past a barrier inside an old temple within a fort where Orc Raiders and Daedric Worshippers are trapped in a magical slumber?

Yes totally. I think OOO has been my favourite questing in any RPG and really hoping Oscuro does a Skyrim version.

More than you ever have. Ive owned pretty much every system ever made over the course of my life, playing nearly every RPG ever made. From The Commodore 64, to RPG choose your own adventure books. Before that, Ive played most every tabletop ever made since the 70's. Before that, before there even were RPGs, I was playing the tabletop strat games that RPGs come from. At one point I had like 15 systems and some 2000+ games, a good amount were RPGs. Know more about me and RPGs.

RPG does not = fetch game.

There are lots of fetch quests, but nearly everyone has a bit of background. It has more non-fetch quests than Oblivion, though, and a lot less than Morrowind. Daggerfall was indeed the real FETCH GAME.

I heard a rumour that Oscuro went to work for Obsidian a year or so ago. Not sure if it's true though. It may mean we wont see another TES mod from him though.

RPGs involve as many stories as does any other storytelling medium. You're being deliberately obtuse.

What does story have to do with what quests entail? Most quests in most RPGs fit into the fetch catagory. There's only so much [censored] that you can even d in a game, and fetch quests in one form or another make up a huge part. More than in any other genre. And I couldn't care less.

OP mentioned a vial? I only had one vial quest, and considering the amount of work I put into it, I'd say the "ending" of it had a rather cool and unique twist and story to it. :)

Which is why you're bothering to reply, eh? Right.

And really? Okay, I'll spell it out for you: Quests are stories.

RPGs can involve killing this or that person, finding out about this or that thing, running away from this or that thing, going to this or that place, etc. etc.

Wow. It turns out, just like other kinds of media, an RPG have a large number of permutations, and doesn't consist of fetch quests.

Well, fetch or kill. It's just a question of how interesting they make the journey in between.

It's a fact. He came on the forums a while back to announce that he was not going to develop the mod, because he's now working for gamesas. In this, he follows a number of other modders who were similarly gobbled up.
