Skyrim wins!... nothing at the BAFTAs

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 9:26 pm

I find it unbelievable that Skyrim which was the game on everyone's tongue since it's release and got several awards, won absolutely sweet FA at last night's video games BAFTA's.

"Portal 2's chief rival and last year's role-playing sensation, Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, didn't win any awards despite being nominated in five categories."

And?

Claire Maguire has never won a BAFTA either. That doesn't mean she doesn't make quality music.

You're not wrong. But what makes this sting more is because it's pretty much expected that Skyrim would win something at the Baftas considering how amazing everyone thinks the game is, and considering it's already won awards at other events.
It was almost a given that Skyrim would, if not wipe the floor with other games, at least pick up something. But nothing at all smacks of BS to me.

No shame in being beaten by Portal 2 in the "best of,"category, and they don't have an award for best RPG. Plus, is it really that surprising that British and European developers are covered a bit better at this than American awards shows? Skyrim got five nominations, that's nothing to sneeze at.

I agree. These awards, like all awards in music, gaming, and film, amount to mutual back-scratching. It is BS.

The choices seem quite reasonable to me, except Portal 2. I never understood the hype about this game.

But honestly, who gives a [censored] about awards? It's like the Oscars where most awarded movies pretty much svck anyways.

Seconded for truth. Portal 2 was a damn good game, no loss in losing to such a monster. And five nominations? Pretty good résumé I'd say.

unlike Skyrim which lacks quality, polish and innovation.

Can't argue too much with the choices made really. Some top quality games there.

I'd have given both best game and best game music to Batman personally though.

Skyrim does lack polish, quality and innovation.

Polish: PC was bad, loads of bugs, unoptimised, bad for mouse and keyboard, graphically poor. PS3 version isn't that good either. Broken patches, poor Q&A.

Quality: Seriously lacking in quest quality and more quantity than quality, probably one the worse crossplatform releases.

Innovation: Bring nothing really new to the series and just an improved version of the previous games with features removed.

A game not winning an award really shouldn't matter if you personally enjoyed the game. You could apply that to a games review scores if you enjoyed the game, yourself. Skyrim is probably the best Western RPG I've played in a while (Tied wtih Fallout New Vegas and Mass Effect 3 [Ending of the later withstanding]), and that's enough for me. I really don't care what games the gaming award shows choose to give out awards to.

Minecraft is much more of a sandbox game and more innovative than Skyrim.

awards = nothing.

Portal can win as many awards as it wants, Ill never play it. Game has absolutely NO appeal to me whatsoever, but, millions of people love it so it will win awards somewhere, sometime, from someone. Same thing with Skyrim, even if people hate it, there will be enough people who love it to give it an award somewhere, sometime, from someone.

This has no bearing on Skyrim as a game. I could care less how many awards Skyrim wins, it's still THE best, up to date RPG on the market. With infinite hours of exploring and adventure.

I believe Skyrim should have won a couple of those awards if I'm honest. But at the end of the day, most of the games that won did deserve it; especially Batman: Arkham City, I thoroughly enjoyed that game. Skyrim is by far my favourite game of the year for 2011-- though late it may have been for 2011, but it still stands as my favourite game for 2012 thus far.

I actually had a short break from Skyrim to play Mass Effect 3. I'm one of the many that were highly disappointed with the ending in that game and am hoping for a DLC to fix my view on one of my franchise's. Once I'm done with my second play-through of ME3, I am jumping back into Skyrim. My Bosmer hungers for the hunt! And coin!

Why are so many people defending Skyrim just because it didn't get any awards? Not everyone agrees that Skyrim is some god of games, a lot are not paid off or biased either and some people can actually see though the hype of the game and give it nothing.

You can say what you like about Portal but it's one of the most innovative games in recent times amongst the onslaught of games that just copy each other and part just upgrades of the same thing.

Completely laughable that Skyrim didn't win anything when it's clearly the best game released last year, even with the bug issues. Portal 2, please that game gets old after a while.

People defend Skyrim because they enjoy it and have opinions just like you do. There is nothing wrong with not liking Skyrim or thinking it doesn't deserve any awards, but you also have to accept the fact that there are a lot of people who do really like the game, and you're not likely to change their minds no matter how many times you tell them that you think it's shallow, not innovative, overly buggy, bad quality, etc.

Did they not have an RPG category at all?

I guess not. The genre is pretty scarce, anymore, in the gaming world. Used to be all kinds of them, now Skyrim is about the only example (I can think of) that came out last year. The only one big enough to get wide attention, anyway. So they just roll them into the action and best game categories.

Best game of 2012 is already a given- Diablo 3! :celebration:

It would have to really svck not to win, and Blizzard doesn't know how to make bad games. Let the raging disagreement begin!!!!
