Something I wish Skyrim had

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 3:16 am

I wish that in between killing dragons and wiping out bandit camps my Dovahkiin could swing by her local tavern to play some cards or dance with some pretty dame. So far all I've seen in terms of kicking back is reading, listening to the bards and having brawls (which kind of isn't relaxing).

I know I can simply tell myself that my character does things yet I'd actually like to be able to DO them. Perhaps I just haven't arrived at an area with these little extras.

DLC material, maybe?

What ways to pass your Dovahkiin's free time would you like to see? Maybe your character is a hardcase warrior who does not slow down for anything but maybe they are a bit of a lazy rogue or just likes a good time.

I also wish that drinking alcohol when inside a tavern altered your sight, perhaps encouraged more humourous outbursts from other patrons.

Agreed. Perhaps that's part of the reason Skyrim seems so bare bones minimum. The inns and taverns could offer quite a wealth of side activities, but we get very little.

It would also be a good way for people to stretch out time between the sometimes rushed questlines (I'm thinking of Winterhold).

I would love just to be able to play some card, dice, chess or other kind of game in the taverns.

Elaborate?

I believe that was a 'no' vote, regarding more extracurricular activities.

Why is that exactly?
I would have thought in something which is geared towards a freedom to role-play as well as to murder the bad guys that these little extras would be nice. It's not like you even have to get married if you don't want to so what is the problem with it?

the fantasy RPGs I like are about dungeon exploring, retrieve ancient artifacts and fight epic battles, not about dancing and playing cards.

The problem is these extras waste resources that could be used for much better things. Like more landmass, dungeons, better quests, etc. Bethesda has only so much resources and technical limitations to work with(Xbox 360), so if they add or improve things chances are something has to be dumbed down or removed. These kind of extras are better left to players to mod in.

So you are suggesting you can't have both within the same game? Or that since the kind of fantasy RPGs you like are a set way that Skyrim needs to be too?

I don't get why people are so averse to the idea of choice. The ability to look into a tavern and go "Oh, I could play cards but I view that as stupid so I'll just go grab some rumours off the barkeep".

As for the resources argument, I get where you are coming from but people who can't afford to buy a PC (my games and system were a gift) can't enjoy mods. I don't think that it necessarily would ruin the experience to have a little extra there. What did marriage really do to the game? I can't imagine it would have made much of a difference in terms of how it turned out in the end.

The Witcher allowed you to play Tabletop games and arm wrestle.

You just have to be male.
And white.
White long hair.
And screwed up eyes.

I don't think they should remove it. Its useful because I can make followers live at my house. They shouldn't remove anything, they should be adding and improving.

Lol! I bought that in the hopes it might run on my friend's laptop. Alas, it is not to be.
I've not played it but I hear it praised all over the 'net and it seems like it has a few extras in there. If it can do that then what is the excuse?

Well, I guess I don't actually know how big the world is.

1st- I play on 360
2nd- for this reason I'd rather have more useful stuff in the game than useless features like the ones you mentioned, considering that consoles have limited memory and disk space, all those things you have mentioned are good for mods, not for the vanilla game

got it now?

Yes, I liked the small games in New Vegas a lot, they should add something like that to Skyrim.

You've been pretty snarky since the beginning of this conversation. I think you may need a time out.
My comment about the PC was directed at the other gentleman/lady who was speaking about mods.

New Vegas is another example of course. I liked being able to go gamble in the casinos and watch the shows in the Tops.
I never was able to catch the Rad Pack for some reason though. :(

EDIT: Agh, I got clumsy. Sorry.

While I wouldn't mind some side activities like fishing (if done properly in real-time), i'm not really a fan of mini-games that take you out of the gameworld. What I mean by that is, with something like cards, it would end up being done like RDR... with cinematics... camera locks... a special mini-game HUD popping up, etc. All of which completely destroys world immersion for me.

For me it kinda helps the immersion because I feel like I'm... living my character, if you know what I mean.
I totally understand where you are coming from though.

Past Time activities could be fun, but to much and it gets Sims like.

A gambling den, an Arena or other venue to bet on maybe horse races, fishing etc could be woven into the game.

But, asking women to dance in the game? I don't think I could handle the rejection of an NPC in a game. I get enough of that in the real world.

Adding a dancing/mini-game mechanic isn't going to bog down the system. (EDIT: Forgotten point ->) However, adding more cookie-cutter dungeons, more mundain "go here, collect that, go there, collect this, come back" quests and landmass with little value gameplay value do bog down the system.

I'd rather have miniscule content that makes the game feel living than have more of what I'm all ready getting bored of.

The game was all ready dumbed down and had many interesting little bits removed for the mere reason of a release date. Look at smithing, the lack of any type of spell combining, the Winterhold quests and the town in general... Another great example would be the Giant and the Painted Cow, I believe this was to be an element in the Civil War questlines that was left out and would have been one of the more original and possibly entertaining quests in the entire game, compaired to what we got with that quest line in the end.

Alas, the players should not be expected to mod their games to get enjoyment out of them... That's why I paid money in the first place... So I didn't have to make my own game to play.
